1 Syllabus / KCPH Intro to Photography Non Majors M/W, 12:30-3:20pm, Fall 2014 Instructor: Leah Gose gosel@ferris.edu Office: 301 Hours: T, 10-1 Phone: Office Phone: x 1181 Course Description An introduction to the fundamentals of photography using a DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera. This course includes digital camera use and basic image manipulation controls using Photoshop. Introductory lighting and artwork reproduction skills are taught. The aesthetics of photography will be discussed in terms of its history, and artistic and technical advancements. Students must own or have use of a digital camera (prosumer grade or above; camera phones are not acceptable). Students considering a minor in photography should take KCPH120. Course Objectives Each student will: 1. Demonstrate the ability to manipulate shutter speed, aperture, and other camera controls to correctly expose an image using the camera meter. 2. Produce a digital image that exhibits correct density, contract, color, and composition. 3. Use image manipulation software to optimize image files for web and print purposes. 4. Utilize a variety of lighting techniques to create intended expressive goals. 5. Discuss the technical and aesthetic merits of imagery using professional critique vocabulary 6. Identify key historic figures and technical developments in the history of the field. 7. Develop an understanding of the elements of visual design such as composition; space, contrast and light through slide lectures of historical and contemporary photographic artworks and gain an awareness of the historical quest for color. Responsibilities: 1. All items pertaining to academic honesty outlined in the KCAD/FSU Student Handbook apply to this course. These items will not be tolerated and will result in a failing grade on any given assignment, along with referral to the college administration: cheating, fabrication, facilitation of academic dishonesty, plagiarism, and/or interference or violation of any course rules outlined in this syllabus. 2. As a student at KCAD and as a student in the photo area you are expected to conduct yourself in a courteous and mature manner. 3. You are expected to have the materials necessary for each class prior to class beginning and you are expected to have knowledge of your syllabus and the timeline of the course. 4. You alone are responsible for missed work and for following instructions as they relate to assignments whether given to you in writing or orally. 5. The policy of no food or drink in any KCAD computer and photography lab will be strictly enforced. Neither food nor drink is allowed in the darkroom or film developing areas. Gum chewing is prohibited in all photo areas. 6. Cell phones must be turned off during class. Text messaging, playing games, taking pictures and conversing on your cell phone etc, is not allowed.

2 7. It is imperative that you work in a way that keeps the lab clean and organized and is respectful of other students. You must realize that your actions will affect others. Please be conscientious of your fellow students. Textbook: 1. A Short Course in Digital Photography by Barbara London and Jim Stone, 2010 SOFTWARE REQUIREMENT: Log on to for current requirements. Class Policies and Grading 1. Regular and punctual attendance is required. You will be allowed 2 unexcused absences. Two late arrivals equal an absence. After 3 absences, the final letter grade is lowered one letter grade. 4 or more absences will result in a failing grade. Absences during critiques will not be tolerated. On critique days, a tardy will result in a reduction of one letter grade for the portfolio/assignment being critiqued; a tardy of more than fifteen minutes or an absence will result in a zero for the portfolio/assignment. Please contact your professor prior to missing class. Lectures and demonstrations are not repeated. 2. All work is due on the assigned day. Late assignments are lowered one letter grade per class day late and do not receive a written or group critique. 3. Grade percentages are determined according to the class requirements list. One grade based on a combination of craftsmanship and creativity is given for each critique. 4. Course evaluation: Your final grade is determined by computing your level of competency for work done in the using the following scale: A - Outstanding achievement for having met all competencies B - Extra achievement for having met all competencies C - Average achievement for having met all competencies D - Deficient or minimal to inferior level of achievement F - Failure to achieve minimum competencies NO A+ GRADES ARE GIVEN 5. A grade of "Incomplete" is granted only with a written doctor s excuse or under emergency circumstances such as a death in the family.

3 Requirements List / KCPH Intro to Photography Non Majors M/W, 1:00-3:15pm, Fall Shutter Speed & Aperture: Sept 15 (10%) Each student will shoot 3 technical assignments. Shoot 36 images and turn in one contact sheet and 2 prints for each assignment. With these exposures do the following exercises to look at: metering, speed, depth of field, moving objects, camera movement and angle. Handouts will be provided. Print 8.5 x11 or larger. 2. Point of View / Perspective: Sept 24 (10%) Each student is required to produce a body of work (5-7 images) using creative natural lighting techniques. Shoot at least 100 images, print 8.5 x11 or larger. Contact sheets required. 2 prints MUST be window mounted. Projects must be contained in a portfolio box. 3. Quiz #1: Oct 1 (5%) This quiz will cover technical and theoretical elements covered the first half of the semester. A Review will be provided. 4. Light & Shadow: Oct 8 (10%) Each student is required to produce a coherent body of creative work (5-7 images). Shoot at least 100 images, print 8.5 x11 or larger. Contact sheets required. 2 prints MUST be window mounted. Projects must be contained in a portfolio box. 5. Scanograms: Oct 22 (15% each) Each student is required to produce a coherent body of creative work (5-7 images) using a flatbed scanner. Print 8.5 x11 or larger. 2 prints MUST be window mounted. Contact sheets required. Projects must be contained in a portfolio box. Guideline sheet will be provided. 6. Portrait: Nov 10 (20%) Each student is required to produce a body of work (5-7 images) using creative studio lighting techniques. Shoot at least 100 images, print 8.5 x11 or larger, and have work in final presentation format at the time of the review. Contact sheets required. 2 prints MUST be window mounted. Projects must be contained in a portfolio box. 7. Final Portfolio Proposal: Nov 12 (5%) Each student is required to create a project proposal that clearly states what will be produced at the conclusion of the project. Guideline sheet for writing will be provided. 8. Quiz #2: Nov 24 (5%) This quiz will cover technical and theoretical elements covered the 2 nd half of the semester. A Review will be provided. 9. Final Portfolio: Dec 1 & 3 (20%) Each student is required to produce a coherent body of creative work (6-8 images) according to the student s proposal. Print 8.5 x11 or larger. 2 prints MUST be window mounted. Contact sheets required. Projects must be contained in a portfolio box. Guideline sheet will be provided. All work must be in final presentation format at the time of the review.
