1 ART / / ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHY MIRACOSTA COLLEGE / / SPRING 2018 INSTRUCTOR Shane Anderson sanderson@miracosta.edu Office Hours: Tuesday 10:50-11:30 in the Photography Course Website and Calendar: open lab schedule MiraCosta Art Department: html MEETING TIME & LOCATION This class meets in OC 2306 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00am 11:50am. Every class session will meet there first unless otherwise specified. COURSE DESCRIPTION ART 208 offers students who have successfully completed Beginning Photography (ART-207, or the equivalent) the opportunity to continue developing a deeper understanding of the principles of photography through technical and creative projects. Instruction may include advanced techniques such as medium and large format cameras and film processing. An introduction to alternative processes and other creative techniques may be explored. An emphasis upon personal expression will provide students flexibility with pursuit of individual goals. Slide lectures will introduce both historical and contemporary photographers. Students will visit current photographic exhibitions in the area. A portfolio will be produced as the final project of this course. ART 208 may be taken 3 times. GENERAL EDUCATION MISSION The general education faculty believe that students completing MiraCosta College s General Education Program are systematic, critical, creative thinkers and clear communicators who are intellectually curious, culturally and scientifically literate, civic-minded, and aesthetically appreciative. GENERAL EDUCATION OUTCOMES To achieve this mission, MiraCosta is committed to providing you a coherent and meaningful education. To that end, the GE faculty have identified six outcomes that you should be competent in as a result of your studies with us. They are: Effective Communication* Critical Thinking/Reasoning/Problem Solving** Responsible Citizenship** Information Competence** Aesthetic Literacy* Productive Work Habits** * Indicates abilities fundamentally addressed in ART 207. ** Indicates abilities you will strengthen through your work in this course. Course-level Student Learning Outcomes At the end of instruction successful students will demonstrate knowledge and mastery of photography. Students will be able to identify major movements/ and or artists working in the photographic medium. Students will be able to convey ideas and concepts about artwork. Course Content and Goals Creative black and white photography exploring the possibilities of the use of visual language in relation to thought processes. Advanced techniques of camera use, film handling and printing will be included, but the emphasis will be placed on the personal expression of ideas. Instruction is offered at intermediate and advanced levels. Prerequisite: ART 207 PAGE 1

2 ATTENDANCE Although students may be dropped by the instructor after three absences, it is ultimately the student s responsibility to drop the class if he or she is unable to complete it. If you arrive late to class or from a break or leave class early you will be marked tardy. Three tardies is the equivalent of an unexcused absence. If you miss class, it is your responsibility to get notes and handouts from your peers. You are also responsible for all assignments, regardless of attendance in class. Students are responsible for officially withdrawing from classes they are no longer attending. SPECIAL NEEDS If you have a disability, you are encouraged to contact Disabled Students Programs & Services at Their office is located in Building 3000, adjacent to Parking lot 3C. They will help you determine what assistance is available for you. If you require any additional help from me, or the facility to accommodate a disability, please do not hesitate to contact me. I will make every effort to insure that you are able to get the work done. We can be incredibly flexible and creative when it comes to finding ways to help students make art. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY AT MIRACOSTA COLLEGE MiraCosta College highly values academic integrity. At the core, this means an honest representation of one s own work. MiraCosta College also promotes the approach that education is best accomplished as a cooperative, collaborative enterprise: we want you to work with and learn from each other. The line between academic integrity and collaborative education is not always easy to define and may vary from one discipline to the next and from one instructor to the next. Many aspects of cheating and plagiarism are universally recognized, while others are subject to debate. This policy provides some broad, general guidelines and allows instructors to be more restrictive according to their preferences and practices. Please ask your instructor for clarification of his/ her expectations. Examples of academic dishonesty include but are not limited to: Cheating: Copying from another student or using unauthorized aids during an examination. Plagiarizing: Copying someone else s work or ideas and misrepresenting them as one s own. Falsification: Making up fictitious information and presenting it as real, or altering records for the purpose of misrepresentation. Facilitation: Helping another student to cheat, plagiarize, or falsify. SAFETY AND CLASS ETIQUETTE Information on chemicals used in the lab and related health & safety is available upon request. Students with concerns should check with the instructor. If you have an allergic reaction or have an accident, notify me or the lab tech immediately! Avoid direct contact with chemistry (this means your skin)! No food or drinks in the lab this is for your safety. Disruptive behavior to the class will not be tolerated, can reduce your final grade, and if continued is grounds for dismissal from the class. Keep cell phones silent during class! Ringing phones are considered disruptive behavior! Do not text or answer phones in class. Clean up after yourselves! Treat the equipment with respect. Photography equipment is expensive and not easily replaced. CRITIQUES AND PARTICIPATION Critiques and participation are very important to your success in this class. Critiques are a time to exchange ideas openly and to give feedback to the artist as to the success of their project. This time will also give you an opportunity to analyze critically and to interpret content and technique. You can not make up a missed critique. Please be sure to be on time and attend all critiques. You must attend and participate in critique even if you have not finished your project. GRADING Course grades are based on a combination of class participation, and successful completion of all assignments. I will only accept ONE late assignment. Late assignments will receive one full reduced letter grade. Assignments turned in on time may be redone for a higher grade. All assignments except the final project may be redone numerous times after the due date for a higher grade. PAGE 2

3 Grades will be figured on the conventional percentage scale. 150 Participation and In-class Practice (30 class 5 pts each) 50 Midterm Exam 150 Technical Exercises 50 Project #1 100 Project #2 100 Project #3 100 Project #4 100 Project #5 200 Final Project 1000 TOTAL POINTS You will be required to turn in a Self-Evaluation for each Project. This will be found online on the course site. More importantly, grades are an important indication of how well you are doing in the course. C represents the minimum acceptable completion of the work and should be considered average. You will have to do above average work or superior work to get a B or an A, respectively. A = Outstanding; pushing the limits of both the student s creativity and the assignment. B = Thorough, thoughtful, and creative approach to the assignment. C = AVERAGE; minimum project requirements met. D = Poor; does not meet minimum requirements. F = Fail; failure to complete the assignment. FIELD TRIPS One field trip to the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) will be planned for the class on a specified date (February 22). If you are unable to attend, there is an alternative project of a 3 page (typed) report on a selected photographer. If we have time we will plan an additional Field Trip to North Coast Photo or Medium Festival of Photography. See the instructor for more details. MATERIALS NEEDED I WILL PROVIDE A SUPPLY LIST ONLINE THROUGH FREESTYLE PHOTO Required: - 35mm or Medium Format single lens reflex (SLR) camera with manual control of aperture, shutter speed, and focus (limited cameras available for checkout) - 35mm Black and white film (approx rolls) - Kodak Tri-X, Ilford Pan-F; Fuji Acros 100, Ilford FP4, Ilford Delta 100, Kodak T-Max 100, Arista EDU Ultra B&W 100/400 ISO; Fuji Neopan 400, Ilford HP5, Kodak T-Max ask me if you have questions about a film type. Any black and white film is acceptable except the following: Kodak BW400 CN, Ilford XP 2, and Fuji Neopan 400 CN (These films must be developed in chemicals for color C-41 processing only). - Multigrade black and white enlarging paper 8 x 10 inches BOX OF 100. DO NOT open the package in light. It is light sensitive and can only be opened in the darkroom. - Negative Notebook with 35mm plastic photo safe sleeves - Package of mounting board (at least 11x14) - Mounting tissue for 8x10 prints Highly Recommended (some of this is available for check-out): - Tripod - Photographic 18% Gray Card - Canned compressed air and/or blower brush (for removing dust from negatives) - Hand held light meter - Cable release - Filters for camera lens UV, haze, polarizing, etc. - Double Reel Patterson or Film Developing Tank with reel - Very small watercolor brush - Darkroom apron, gloves, towels, scissors Approximate cost of materials including camera ($ ) TEXTBOOKS (recommended not required) Photographic Possibilites by Robert Hirsch Photography by John Upton and Barbara London 7th-10th edition - A limited number of copies will be provided in the classroom.
