Course Description A traditional darkroom photography class which introduces black and white film developing, fiber based printing, and image manipulation and presentation techniques. Taught with traditional film and photo paper; requires a film camera, limited number of which department can loan students. Students will learn traditional black and white darkroom photography and be navigated through a variety of traditional and experimental silver based media and processes. The class covers the fundamentals of how film cameras work an how to successfully expose, process, develop, and execute images in the darkroom. Students will be challenged to push their imagery and think critically and openly about their work. This class is weighted towards developing technical know how and clear, well conceived, and communicated conceptual work. Knowledge of basic camera functions and familiarity with the principles of design is required before entering the class. Students will complete three projects and a gallery exhibition. 2 Course Learning Outcomes (CLO) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: CLO 1 Acquire a technical understanding of analog photographic processes. CLO 2 Become familiar with historical and contemporary developments of photography CLO 3 Understand how to read an image both technically and conceptually. CLO 4 Create a foundation for developing and appreciating a variety of aesthetics. CLO 5 Build the skillset to give and receive constructive and critical feedback. CLO 6 Pair technical skills with conceptual themes in work. CLO 7 Feel comfortable writing an artist statement CLO 8 Take part in critiques to develop artistic language. CLO 9 Finish and execute works for a greater understanding of gallery exhibitions. Required Texts/Readings Textbook Art & Fear Fear Observations Rewards Artmaking/dp/ Diffusion: The Matter Of Light Extended Digital the matter of light digital edition SJSU Photo Lab Manual Download from This manual is required reading, that will help acquaint you with the Photo Lab facility and safety procedures. There is a darkroom safety quiz that is required prior to any use of the lab. The manual also contains important information regarding film developing and printing steps in our facilities. Bring this manual with you to the darkroom, or keep it in your locker for reference. 3 Other technology requirements / equipment / materials 35mm Analog Camera. We unfortunately have a limited quantity (2 packs) sheets of RC Photo Paper. I recommend Ilford RC Pearl* (1 pack) 25 sheets of Fiber Photo Paper. This will be for the final assignment* Plastic 35mm Negative Print Files* Plastic 120mm Negative Print Files* (5 10 rolls) 35mm film. I recommend Kodak TMax 100/400 or Ilford Delta 100/400 (2 rolls) 120 mm film. I recommend Kodak TMax 100/400 or Ilford Delta 100/400 Scissors. Available at lab window Dry Mounting Tissue 8x10 or Photo Corners* Acid Free masking or artists tape 11x14 Mat boards for 5 images. Black or white only please* Bottle Opener. Available at lab window. Towels for the darkroom don t forget your towel! Film processing tank and reels. We have limited quantity available. Portfolio Case/box. Available at bookstore or Foto Xpress. Overall cost $10 50 Manila Envelope or Folder for Negatives and Contact Sheets. Bottle of Negative Cleaner fluid and package of lens cleaning tissues.* Copy of San Jose State Photo Lab Manual (online at Photo Dept. web site) Darkroom Apron, Cable Release, or Tripod (Optional) Box for pinhole (an old shoe box works well) Black duck tape* Optional: Apron chemicals stain *Good items to buy in bulk or with fellow classmates for sharing. Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) There will be a quiz on lab safety and use during the first few weeks of the semester. Please review the information in the photo lab manual. safety test/ Note: Women who are pregnant should not be working around the chemicals in the darkroom. 4 Course Requirements and Assignments SJSU classes are designed such that in order to be successful, it is expected that students will spend a minimum of forty five hours for each unit of credit (normally three hours per unit per week), including preparing for class, participating in course activities, completing assignments, and so on. More details about student workload can be found in University Policy S12 3 at 3.pdf Class Assignments Mini Assignment PINHOLE CAMERA: Create mesmerizing and mysterious photographs using your own pinhole camera. Test, and calculate exposures for RC darkroom paper. Print a total of three images held together by concept, subject, and style. Please see rubric for complete list of grading elements. THE SELF IN RETROSPECT: How do we define ourselves? What defines us? How do we quantify our lives? What has brought us to where we are now? What struggles have we overcome, or are still grappling with? Many photographers have investigated the topic of the self. Culture, upbringing, society, geographic location, past and present all play a part in defining who we are. Using self portraiture, find a way to translate a glimpse of your identity into a series of five images (on paper sized at least 8x10). This series should be successful in concept, subject and style. Contact sheets of three or more rolls of film must accompany you prints in a manila envelope. Prints will be evaluated based on all technical requirements covered in the class including composition, balance, use of contrast, filters, burning and dodging, etc. Projects will also be evaluated based on clear, well communicated, and developed concepts. GOLDEN LIGHT DARK AS NIGHT: The first and last hours of light the earth sees before becoming bright, or delving into darkness can be the most beautiful. Casting a warm glow across everything it touches. The night is mysterious and captivating, holding secrets countless photographers have tried to unmask. Create a series of five long exposure photographic prints (on paper sized at least 8x10) taken at golden hour or nighttime. This series should be successful in concept, subject and style. Contact sheets of three or more rolls of film must accompany you prints in a manila envelope. Prints will be evaluated based on all technical requirements covered in the class including composition, balance, use of contrast, filters, burning and dodging, etc. Projects will also be evaluated based on clear, well communicated, and developed concepts. Please see rubric for complete list of grading elements. FINAL SERIES & EDITION: Create a series of five images (on paper sized at least 8x10) on your choice of subject presented in window mats. One of these images will need to be framed for our class gallery show. Date TBD. This series should be successful in concept, subject and style. Contact sheets of three or more rolls of film must accompany you prints in a manila envelope. Prints will be evaluated based on all technical requirements covered in the class including composition, balance, use of contrast, filters, burning and dodging, etc. FALL 2016 Page 4 of 10

READING RESPONSE: You will write a two page single spaced reading response to the reading Art & Fear. Final Examination or Evaluation The final examination will take place on Monday 19 th December 2016 at 2:45pm. Students will meet at the scheduled time to finish any critiques, collect any work, and participate in a print swap. Grading Information Your total final grade will be weighted as follows: Grading Rubric for each assignment: Each assignment will be graded out of 100 points from the following criteria: Concept, Creativity, & Expression: 20 Technique (exposure, good tonal range, skillful manipulation of materials, etc.): 20 Use of Elements & Design Principles (line, shape, composition, rhythm, variety, balance, etc.): 20 Presentation (even & consistent borders, clean prints, etc.) : 20 Contact Sheets: 20 Determination of Grades Your final grade will be determined from the addition of all assignments, writing, gallery exhibition, and participation. Extra Credit: Contact me if you think you are having trouble. Do not wait until the class day before work is due. Grading Weights: Assignments (Including Gallery Exhibit): 70% Participation: 15% Writing: 10% Print Exchange: 5% Late work will be marked down by a half letter grade for each class day late. If you are having difficulty please inform me via with enough time for me to assist you. If you think you may miss a class you must inform me via as soon as possible, preferable at least two class days before the missed class. Missed classes due to medical or family emergency require documentation. You must me as soon as possible and bring in a signed doctor s note or if family emergency documentation of such emergency as justification. You should arrive five minutes before class starts to get settled. If you arrive late two or more times throughout the semester you participation grade will be negatively affected. Cell phone use and Internet browsing is not allowed in class. Once you arrive you cell phone should be turned off. If you are caught using your cell phone or browsing the web in class it will negatively affect you grade. Please be mindful of your colleague and your instructor. It is disrespectful and distracting to be browsing the web and on your cell phones in class. Please be respectful and mindful of your colleagues. Be constructive with you feedback, I like it is not constructive and will not count as participation in critique. If you are a talkative person in critique step back and allow someone who is quieter speak up every so often. It is your responsibility to make up missed class sessions or late work. If you must miss a class, please send me an (24 hours notice). Many class lectures and demonstrations cannot be repeated or made up. Any deadline missed will result in lowering the assignment grade one letter grade for each class day that it is late. Again, talk to me if you are having problems. Do not miss critique days, even if you don t have work to show. I will be much more likely to accept excuses for late work if you attended the critique. Assignments take two days to critique in a class of this size. Showing up to critique is part of your overall grade. If you miss all or part of critique it will result in a lowering of that projects grade. FALL 2016 Page 6 of 10

7 I expect you to attend both days of the critique. Failure to do so will lower the given assignment grade by a half letter grade, and could affect your Class Participation grade as well.
