1 PHOT 150 Introduction to Photography GROSSMONT COLLEGE SPRING 2014 INSTRUCTOR Shane Anderson course website MEETING PLACE AND TIME This class meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00-9:55pm in DIGITAL ARTS The class is 2 hours of lecture and 4 hours of lab per week. PHOT 150 An introductory course that examines the nature of photography and visual literacy through the personal exploration and making of photographic images as well as the critical discourse of photography s role and function in society and culture. The primary focus of the course will be to engage in photographic practice as a means to respond subjectively as well as objectively to the conceptual and aesthetic experiences of the photographic image as a visual document of creative expression and communication. Historical and contemporary photographic works from the contexts of the family album, art photography, commercial / advertising photography, photography and media, and cyberspace will be examined and discussed to further cultivate and refine each students visual literacy of the photographic image. Appropriate for students without prior photographic experience. Digital camera required. PREREQUISITES none. Satisfies Grossmont GE Area C requirements. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLO s) Upon completion of this course, our students will be able to do the following: Create photographs of creative expression that demonstrate the purposeful use of photography s aesthetic attributes, including the use of light, compositional organization, photographic description, emphasis and moments of exposure. Demonstrate application of photographic tools, materials and processes, including camera controls, image exposure and processing. Demonstrate application of proper laboratory practices for making optimum photographic prints. Demonstrate application of proper laboratory practices for optimum print finishing and presentation. Demonstrate application of critical thinking practices in describing, interpreting and evaluating the use of photography as a means of effective creative expression and communication of personal vision. Assessment Activity: Portfolio and Reflective Self-Assessment Essay COURSE OBJECTIVES The student will: Demonstrate the ability to recognize and recall the critical issues and visual strategies of photography and lens-based culture as a visual document of creative expression and communication. Capture photographs of creative expression and communication that demonstrate the purposeful use of the critical issues and visual strategies of photography and lens-based culture.

2 Demonstrate application of photographic tools, materials and processes, including camera controls, image exposure and processing strategies, and photographic printing techniques. Demonstrate application of proper laboratory practices necessary for making, presenting and discussing photographic images of considered conceptual and aesthetic execution as well as optimum technical quality, craft and professional standards. Demonstrate application of critical thinking practices in describing, interpreting and evaluating the use of photography as a means of effective creative expression and communication of personal vision within the contexts of society and culture. INSTRUCTIONAL FACILITIES Access to the Internet. Lecture room, suitable for image projection presentations. Photographic processing, printing, and finishing laboratory. Computer lab with digital imaging input and output devices and imaging software. SPECIAL MATERIAL REQUIRED OF THE STUDENT Electronic storage media. Image-making device, including digital cameras, camera phones, tablets and current consumer-capture devices. Photographic film, printing paper, and basic imaging/print optimization and presentation materials. COURSE CONTENT An introduction to the practice and critical discourse of photography, photographic seeing and lens-based culture as a visual document of creative expression and communication. Historical and contemporary photographic masterworks within the contexts of the family album, art photography, commercial/advertising photography, photography and media, and cyberspace are analyzed in detail to examine the critical discourse of photographic language and visual literacy. Hands-on exploration of camera types and functions, image exposure and controls, image processing and print optimization, photographic print finishing techniques, and critical evaluation of the final photographic print. Utilize visual strategies in understanding the nature of photography s aesthetic attributes to produce photographs of visual engagement and conceptual meaning. Hands-on laboratory practice with basic cameras, photographic materials and processes in developing technical craftsmanship to produce photographs of creative expression and communication. COLLEGE AND COURSE POLICIES ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS In accordance with Grossmont College policy, when absences exceed the number of hours that a class meets in a PAGE 2

3 week, the instructor may drop the student from the class for excessive absences. It is the student s responsibility to discuss anticipated extensive absences with the instructor. Make-up work for an absence of any kind must be completed to the satisfaction of the instructor. No absence relieves the student of the responsibility of completing all work assigned. If you are not present during the entire class or leave class early without prior discussion with the instructor, you will be considered absent from the class with an unexcused absence. For lecture lab courses which are scheduled to meet for six hours per week, the third unexcused absence could result in your being dropped from the class. ADD DROP POLICY Students may add courses only during the official Add period using an add code issued by the instructor and submitting the completed Change of Program Card to the Admission and Records Office. It is the student s responsibility to officially drop courses they are no longer attending. If a course is not officially dropped, you may receive an F for the course. The last day to drop a course without a W appearing on your record is: February 28, 2014 The last day to drop a course and receive a W on your record is: April 25, 2014 COLLEGE STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT Students are subject to adhering to the policies and procedures of the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District, as well as all federal, state and local laws. Student conduct must conform to District and College rules and regulations as well as course policies. If a Student Code of Conduct violation occurs while a student is enrolled, he or she may be issued administrative action, including warning (verbal and/or written), written reprimand, suspension, and/or expulsion. For additional information on the Student Code of Conduct, please consult the Grossmont College Catalog as well as the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs. Misconduct not listed in the catalog may also result in discipline if good cause exists (Educational Code Section 76034). ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Cheating and plagiarism (using as one s own ideas writings, materials, or images of someone else without acknowledgement or permission) can result in any one of a variety of sanctions. Such penalties may range from an adjusted grade on the particular exam, paper, project, or assignment (all of which may lead to a failing grade in the course) to, under certain conditions, suspension or expulsion from a class, program or the college. For further clarification and information on these issues, please consult with your instructor or contact the office of the Associate Dean of Student Affairs. STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES Students with disabilities who may need accommodations in the class are encouraged to notify the instructor and contact Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSP&S) early in the semester so that reasonable accommodations may be implemented as soon as possible. The phone number for the Tutoring Center is VISUAL ARTS + HUMANITIES DEPARTMENT AND PHOTOGRAPHY AREA STUDENT CONDUCT AND POLICIES It is expected that all students will conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with common courtesy to all other students, faculty, and lab technicians. Students are expected to dress appropriately for a laboratory class. VAH Department and Photography Area Studio Courses are officially formatted as combined Lecture Lab sections. This means that the lecture or lab portion of the class may occur anytime during the scheduled time block for the course. When working in the analog photography areas, including the film developing rooms, print finishing area and darkrooms, closed-toe shoes must be worn always per the darkroom safety requirements. To insure a productive working environment for all students, please clean up your work area by returning all items to their proper storage area upon the completion of class and lab. Computers in all areas of the photography area, including the classrooms, digital lab, print finishing area and studio, are strictly for use as it pertains to photography curriculum activities. Using the computers for personal , downloading of music, and/or other inappropriate use will be considered a violation of the Student Code of Conduct. There is no food and/or drink allowed in the film developing rooms, print finishing areas, darkrooms, digital labs and studio. A securely capped drink may be stored in the storage space provided and must be taken into the hallway to be consumed. In consideration of fellow classmates and to insure a thoughtful and productive learning environment without disruption, please turnoff and put cell phones away before entering the classroom. If at any point during course instructional activities the cell phone is activated, this will be considered a violation of the Student Code of Conduct and will result in administrative action, including a warning and/ or being asked to leave the classroom, and/or a short-term suspension. The subjects and materials covered in this course may sometimes be of such a nature as to be offensive to an i ndividual s personal beliefs. Politics, religion, sexuality and/or morality have often been the content of artists efforts and will be discussed openly in a mature manner to facilitate a greater understanding of varying perspectives. PHOTOGRAPHY AREA EQUIPMENT CHECK-OUT PROCEDURE AND POLICY Off-campus check out of Grossmont College photography equipment is on Fridays only from 9:30am to 3:00pm. Students without written reservations in the form of a completed contract cannot check-out equipment under any circumstances. Equipment is due as follows: Following Monday if the students photography class meets on Mondays & Wednesdays. Following Tuesday if the students photography class meets on Tuesdays & Thursdays. Equipment is due on the date specified. Overdue equipment will result in a one week suspension of borrowing privileges. A second incident of overdue equipment will result in the loss of borrowing privileges for the remainder of the semester. Student must present identification and proof of current paid enrollment to the Photography Lab Technician at time of check out. PAGE 4

5 All check out sheets (off-campus and in-house) must have both student signature and staff to validate the contract. Students making up an incomplete, requiring equipment must show proof of paid enrollment in a lab section before any check out can occur. Final due dates for equipment will be posted prior to the end of the semester and all equipment will be due on that date. The Photography Lab Technician does not inspect, repair or instruct students in the use of their equipment. Any such questions should be directed to the Course or Lab Instructor. There are no exceptions nor allowances of these procedures and policies when checking-out Grossmont College Photography equipment. CRITIQUES AND PARTICIPATION Critiques and participation are very important to your success in this class. Critiques are a time to exchange ideas openly and to give feedback to the artist as to the success of their project. This time will also give you an opportunity to analyze critically and to interpret content and technique. You can not make up a missed critique. Please be sure to be on time and attend all critiques. You must attend and participate in critique even if you have not finished your project. REMEMBER participation and in-class exercises make up 15% of your final grade. GRADING Your final grade will be determined by a culmination of points earned based on your performance with the below listed curriculum assignments. Questions regarding curriculum assignment grades and/or the final grade must be brought to the attention of the instructor. 150 Participation, daily exercises, and weekly photo submissions (30 class 5 pts each) 25 Reading Response #1 25 Reading Response #2 50 Quizzes 10 pts each) all quizzes but the first one will be pop quizzes 100 Final Exam 50 Technical Excercise #1 camera controls 50 Technical Excercise #2 photographic print 50 Project #1 river of shadows 50 Project #2 a sense of place 50 Project #3 color and emotion 100 Project #4 photo sequence 100 Project #5 about face: the photographic portrait 200 Final Portfolio + Artist Statement 1000 TOTAL POINTS FINAL GRADING Your overall final grading based on points earned will be representative as follows: A B C D F Course grades are based on a combination of class participation, and successful completion of all assignments. Late assignments will receive one full reduced letter grade (each week late = one grade lower.) Assignments turned in on time may be redone for a higher grade. Grades will be figured on the conventional percentage scale. More importantly, grades are an important indication of how well you are doing in the course. C represents the minimum acceptable completion of the work and should be considered average. You will have to do above average PAGE 5

6 work or superior work to get a B or an A, respectively. A = Outstanding; pushing the limits of both the student s creativity and the assignment. B = Thorough, thoughtful, and creative approach to the assignment. C = AVERAGE; minimum project requirements met. D = Poor; does not meet minimum requirements. F = Fail; failure to complete the assignment. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance Daily evaluation of individual student works in the laboratory. Objective written examinations. Subjective / objective written responses of critical issues in relationship to photography and visual literacy. Critique of photographic work of the class. Critique and review of final portfolio of work. Final objective written examination. Outside Class Assignments Field photography assignments. Museum and gallery visits. Preparation of work for class presentations. Outside work for the final portfolio. FIELD TRIPS One field trip to MOPA (Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego) will be planned for the class on a specified date. If you are unable to attend, there is an alternative project of a 5 page (typed) report on a selected photographer. See the instructor for more details. Adobe Photoshop CS6 for Photographers by Martin Evening SUPPLIES + MATERIALS Digital Camera A dslr (digital single lens reflex) camera is recommended but you can also use a point and shoot digital camera a limited number of cameras are available for weekend checkout. Cell phone cameras are not acceptable for use in this course.
