1 Department of Art Fall 2009 ARTH 1306, Section 001 HISTORY OF WORLD ART II Seamon Hall, Room 210, TR 1:30 2:50 pm Professor: Dr. Stacy Schultz Office: Fox Fine Arts Center, Room A455A Office telephone: (915) Office Hours: MW 12:00-1:00 pm Your instructor for this course has been involved in studio art, design, and art history since her undergraduate days. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Pitzer College, and a Master of Arts and Ph.D. in Art History from Rutgers University. While a graduate student in New Jersey, her duties as an instructor/teaching assistant encompassed both art history and english in the Rutgers Writing Program. Since the completion of her dissertation in 2004, entitled The Female Body in Performance: Themes of Beauty, body Image, Identity, and Violence, she has taught art history, women s studies, and film history in Kentucky, throughout Southern California, and most recently at The University of Texas at Arlington. Dr. Schultz presented two papers in 2005 and 2007 at the annual College Art Association conference engaging the intersections of gender and identity politics. Her publications include Naming in Order to Heal and Redeem: Violence Against Women in Performance, n. paradoxa (Activist Art Issue, January 2009) and Latina Identity: Reconciling Ritual, Culture, and Belonging, which appeared in the Spring/Summer 2008 issue of Woman s Art Journal. COURSE STATEMENT This survey lecture course, as a continuation of ARTH 1305, is designed to expose the student to the work of major figures in several parts of the world over a broad span of history from c to the present. Our interests will turn to the artist, the creator of the work; style, the characteristics of a work peculiar to its time, culture, place, and creator; technique, or how the work was made; as well as iconography, or the study of meaning, symbolism and messages carried in a work of art. We will look at the visual arts painting, sculpture, and architecture in many different contexts: religious, political, economical, and social. The course demonstrates how the production of art and architecture in linked to climate and geography (the natural world) and governmental, religious, and philosophical systems (the social and cultural world). Student learning outcomes upon successfully completing the course: 1. To use artistic terminology and concepts as they apply to works of art 2. To identify and evaluate the role of the artist and the role of art within societal and historical contexts 3. To categorically distinguish works of art within a historical or stylistic framework 4. To describe, analyze, and compare works of art through written responses 1
2 TEXTBOOKS Required: Gardner s Art Through the Ages (Twelfth Edition) Fred S. Kleiner, Christin J. Mamiya, and Richard G. Tansey Reading assignments noted on the Course Schedule, with the exception of the first lecture, should be completed before the class meeting listed. COURSE MATERIALS Students should be prepared to take notes for each class. No prerequisites are required. COURSE PREREQUISITES ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITY Students are expected to comply with the Academic Integrity policy at UTEP as defined under the Student Affairs section of the Dean of Students homepage. All work submitted by students must be their own and must be prepared exclusively for this course. Cheating/Plagiarism: Cheating is unethical and not acceptable. Plagiarism is using information or original wording in a paper without giving credit to the source of that information or wording. You may not submit work for this class that is not your own or that was created for another class. If you are found to be cheating or plagiarizing, you will receive a grade of zero (0) for that assignment or exam. Please note that you may be subject to disciplinary action through the office of the Dean of Students as per UTEP catalog policy. Refer to for further information on these issues. No make-up exams or homework assignments will be given or accepted unless prior (not at the beginning of class) arrangements have been made with the professor. Only one scheduled make-up will be given for each exam. Students without a documented excuse will receive a full-grade penalty on each make-up exam. 3 DESCRIPTIONS OF MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS AND EXAMINATIONS Three exams and a cumulative final will be given during the course of Summer Session I covering reading assignments and lectures. Exams will consist of slide identifications (title, artist, movement, date, and materials), multiple choice, term matching, and short essays. The Final Exam will include items discussed since the last exam, as well as cumulative material. A museum paper will constitute the major writing assignment of this course (3 to 4 pages in length, typed, double-spaced). The works will be selected from the permanent collection of the El Paso Museum of Art. Important dates and deadlines are as follows: October 6 First Exam November 3 Second Exam October 30 Course Drop Deadline December 3 Museum Paper due December 10 Final Exam, 4:00-6:45 pm EXAMS (60%): The First, Second, and Final Exams are each worth 20%. Exam questions are drawn from reading assignments, lectures, and class discussion, so regular attendance and the ability to discuss reading assignments are required for a passing grade. MUSEUM PAPER (20%): The museum paper will be interpretive in nature and is not intended as a research assignment. You may only reference class notes and the textbook with appropriate citations. No internet sources will be accepted other than the museum website. This written response will involve description using relevant artistic vocabulary, analysis, and comparison of art forms. The object of this assignment is to develop analytical, critical and writing skills. You will receive a subsequent handout on the museum paper this week. ATTENDANCE/CLASS PARTICIPATION (20%): Regular attendance is essential to understanding the material presented. Students will be expected to arrive on time and actively participate in class discussions, since attendance will make up 20% of final grades. Roll will be taken, or a sign-in sheet made available, at the beginning of each class. If you arrive late, make sure that you see me as class ends. Please note that you will be counted then as late. Three late arrivals/early departures will count as an absence. If you arrive late to an exam, note that you may not be permitted to take the exam on that date. Please arrive on time to avoid incurring the make-up penalty. 1/3 of a letter grade will be subtracted from the final grade of any students with four (4) unexcused absences; 2/3 of a letter grade for five (5) unexcused absences. Six (6) or more unexcused absences will result in a failing grade. Any absence will be considered unexcused unless an acceptable documented excuse is provided. Students must make arrangements with me to complete any missing work on a timely basis if an excused absence is permitted. If you miss more than six classes, I recommend that you drop or withdraw from the course. 3
4 Your class participation is assessed based on frequency of thoughtful contributions to the class. Please be respectful of the opinions of others. Disruptive behavior and/or talking during class do not contribute to a positive classroom environment. Active participation will influence borderline grades. GRADING All grades are calculated using percentages and converted into letter grades according to the following scale: % A 80 89% B 70 79% C 60 69% D Below 60% F INCOMPLETES, WITHDRAWALS, PASS/FAIL An incomplete grade I can be given at the discretion of the instructor and the approval of the department chair. In order to be granted an Incomplete, the student must be passing the course and encountering a serious legitimate situation beyond his/her control that requires additional time to complete the course. It is the responsibility of the student to drop the course or withdraw in a timely manner. Any student who does not adhere to the deadline will be issued a letter grade for his/her performance in the course. ARTH 1306 is a grade-based course. Audit or pass/fail options are not available. ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY Cellular phone usage (including text messaging) is not permitted during class. Please turn your ringer off. If you need to have your phone on vibrate for work or family reasons, please see me. If a cell phone rings during class or I see that you are texting, the student will be counted as absent. You may use laptops in class to take notes, not to use the internet. 4
