2 From the Editor The concept of a New Year though a human construct, does tend to signify in our minds a new beginning, mostly I imagine, of hope. One of my hopes/aspirations(?), is that 2018 will bring forth a plethora of newsworthy articles which will reflect truly the spirit of the founding members of this, our club. However, had it not been for the efforts of Rick and Harry, for which I am truly grateful, this first edition of Turnings would indeed have been a hollow vessel. As to whether or not February s edition will follow suit it is for you, the members to decide - I can only include material that is sent to me by YOU. Mike A message from John MacLellan. November 2017 Meeting Thanks to my silly error in misreading Nov 17 as November 17 th instead of November 2017 in the confirmation , the demonstration by Roger Gubbin did not take place on 16 th November. I apologise both to members and to Roger, who was loaded up ready to travel north on 17 th. I hope to arrange a demonstration by Roger at a future meeting. Many thanks to Harry, Mary, Derek and Stuart for stepping into the breech. Thanks also, to you, the members for raising some interesting issues for what turned out to be a lively discussion. Thanks also to Mary for critiquing the entries for the Woodturner of the Year competition in rather more detail than she had expected when asked to judge the competition. February 2018 meeting February s demonstrator on Thursday, 15 th is Nigel Maddocks. Nigel is chairman of Somerset Woodturners and has demonstrated at several other cubs in our region. Although he has not revealed what he plans to demonstrate to us, his demonstrations often feature some interesting-looking multi-centre turning. He is also known to have views on sharpening tools which hopefully he will share with us. 3 Woodturner(s) of the Year By Harry Childs November Club Night, as you will have read elsewhere, took on a somewhat different format than planned but, as is usual, it did included the Woodturner of the Year Competitions. The competition is split into two sections - Traditional (round and brown doesn t do it justice!) and Artistic, with any club member able to submit up to 3 pieces of work between the categories. As you can see from Rick s photographs there were a good number of entries. Some superb pieces of work clearly demonstrating the range of ideas and quality of turning members are capable of. (See photo gallery on pages 5 & 6 - Ed) Our own Mary Ashton did the judging after spending the second part of the evening providing a constructive critique of each and every entry. The winning entries were not announced until the December meeting. Photoless December Club Night. The Club Christmas Social evening took place on Thursday 14 th December and as usual there were fun and games a-plenty mixed in with some serious wood turning. The main event was for two teams of club members who were challenged with creating turned Christmas Tree decorations to hang on their side of the tree. Members put aside their reservations about looking foolish in front of their peers and not only got well and truly stuck in but also created in their allotted 5 minute turning session some very creative and even beautiful decorations. Thank you all for getting involved and, talking to most of you it seemed that you really enjoyed it too. A few members also rose to the challenge of entering the whistle completion - and all the entries worked just some better than others. Turkey sandwiches, mulled wine and mince pies were on offer at the break and the evening concluded with the annual awards presentations. Rick Lock did a great job of taking photos of the events and presentations but due to an unfortunate computer crash they have all currently been lost.

5 CLIVE DRAKE s imaginative and beautifully created piece was the winner of the Artistic WoodTurner of the Year Competition. One of a pair of wonderfully turned and finished children s chairs, lovingly made for his grandchildren, was the Traditional Woodturner of the Year Competition winner for ATUL VARAMBHIA
