THRU THE LENS DALLAS CAMERA CLUB FIELD TRIPS This month's field trip will be to the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens on Saturday, November 19th. It features one of the more spectacular Japanese Gardens in the country as well as an indoor tropical conservatory and many other gardens. The grounds open at 8am to 4pm, but the Japanese Garden ($3.00 entrance fee) and Conservatory don't open until 10am. Tripods are allowed, but are discouraged in the Conservatory and Japanese Garden on busy days because of narrow trails. Do not set up tripod legs off the walkways or block the passage of other visitors. Monopods are O.K. More info about the gardens is available at To get there, take I-30 about 1 1/4 miles west of downtown Ft. Worth to University Drive, exit and go north. The Botanical Gardens are the first two left turns. We will meet for lunch around noon at Kincaid's, a legendary burger joint in an old grocery store at 4901 Camp Bowie Blvd. From the gardens, go north a short way to Lancaster and go left past the Amon Carter to Camp Bowie. Continue southwestward about 1.7 miles, Kincaid's is on the left at the intersection of Camp Bowie and Eldridge. Those who wish to keep shooting in the afternoon can visit the Fort Worth Zoo on South University or the museums back on Lancaster. 3 DALLAS CAMERA CLUB Egret With Quads - By Paula Buzenius, 2nd place in the Masters Projected Image division in the September Open contest. Film or Digital Digital. ISO Setting Camera Type - Digital SLR Camera Manufacturer - Canon Camera Model - D20 Shutter Speed and Aperture - 1/1600 sec., f5.6 Lens Choice mm lens, with image stabilizer. Lens Manufacturer - Canon. Filter - Polarizer Flash - Not used. Location - Lake Martin, Louisiana. Time of Day - Morning. Tripod - Tripod or lens resting on car window, not sure. Cable Release - No. Special adjustments made after image was captured - In Photoshop 7, I used some minor adjusting in color and levels and of course, cropping. Comments - I think the most important ingredient for photography that stands out is passion. You have to find a subject you feel passionate about. When I started photography several years ago, I began photographing a nest of morning doves in my back yard. Though I enjoy the challenge of photographing other subjects, birds became my passion from that early photographic experience. Morning doves to local ducks and egrets found in ponds of Las Colinas became my first subjects. When Dody planned a field trip to Lake Martin, Louisiana in 2003 I jumped at the chance. Lake Martin is located about 10 to 15 min outside of Lafayette and is noted for housing more than 15,000 pair of nesting birds in recent years. My camera at that time was only a 1.5 megapixal although the zoom was 10X. The photographs I took of the egrets on that trip were not good enough for competition but the experience was exciting enough to ignite a deeper desire to create better photographs of birds in the wild. Armed with a Canon Eos Digital SLR camera and a 400mm IS lens, I returned in 2004 and Egret with Quads was taken on my first trip to Lake Martin in Louisiana during the spring of That photograph is most exciting for me because of the four babies in the nest. I have made trips to Lake Martin in springs of 2003 and 2004 but have never before seen more than three babies in a nest. Most often there are only two. As the birds grow and room becomes tight, one or two may be pushed from the nest. In March the larger egrets and herons begin to arrive at Lake Martin to nest. In early April there are limited opportunities for photography of babies just starting to emerge from their shells, but the plumage of the rest of the bird population is spectacular and worth the trip. All throughout April Great Egrets are hatching. The end of April and beginning of May is nearing the end of the larger egrets and herons and the beginning of the arrival of the smaller varieties. Throughout the spring there is opportunity of one kind or another. There is no telling what the hurricane season has done to Lake Martin or the Louisiana marshland but, I intend on making a trip or two this coming spring as well. It s now in my blood. If any of you should venture a trip this spring, I am sure you will become addicted as well. Happy Shooting. Paula Buzenius DCC WINS BACK THE BIRD! THRU THE LENS Paula Buzenius On Thursday, October 6, 2005 the Fort Worth Camera Club invited the Dallas camera club to their newly renovated meeting hall at the North Texas Health Science Center to compete for the coveted Bird Trophy. Thirteen DCC representatives were greeted by a wonderful buffet of sandwiches, snacks and desserts and filled their plates high. The atmosphere was one of excitement and anticipation because of Dallas new projected digital images competing against Fort Worth s standard slide projections. The competition began with the showing of prints. As they were judged one by one alternating Dallas and Fort Worth prints, the scores soon sent Fort Worth into a dominant position. By the end of the print competition, Fort Worth was 19 points ahead and we 13 Dallas representatives had long faces and were looking for answers as to what we needed to do to improve our competition selections for next year. Not one Dallas print placed for a ribbon award. As the projection competition began, we were of the belief the cause was lost. No Bird for Dallas. As the judges started to give their scores we seemed to be doing pretty good. As the scores kept coming Dallas started to think, at least we won t be totally embarrassed by the landslide we previously anticipated. When the last score was given, and the scores tallied, Dallas gave an exclamation of joy. We pulled the rabbit out of the hat. We won by 6 points. Eleanore Avery s Mongolian Rancheros placed 1 st, Mel Sharp s Steeples placed 2 nd and Paula Buzenius s Egret s with Quads placed with an Honorable Mention. Fort Worth s final comment was, We re going to have to go digital. 3
