Worth Camera Club will host the Dallas Camera Club for the annual Bird contest. Each club will submit it s best 15 prints and 15 projected images to be judged by a panel of judges. The club with the most judge-awarded points will win the contest and will be custodian for the prestigious sculpture affectionately known as The Bird ; at least until next year, and have their club name engraved on the plaque that accompanies it. All DCC members are invited to attend the contest held at the Fort Worth club. The meeting will be held at 3500 Camp Wisdom Blvd., Room 2 Res-100 Everett Hall. Parking is available on Clifton Street entrance. Enter building on the right from the Clifton Street entrance parking lot. For a map go to their website at 1

Old City Park is a 13 acre park with over 30 historic and reconstructed structures including an 1860 s farm, general store, printing shop, church, school, bank and more. We have been given permission to photograph inside the buildings, but NO FLASH is allowed inside. Stay behind barriers used to protect collections. Old City Park is a great place to work on long exposure, contrast lighting, still life and architectural photography. Lunch will be at 11:30 at a place to be announced. Old City Park opens at 10am, parking is free, admission is $7 adult, $5 Senior, $4 Child. Directions and map will be available at DCC meeting on Oct. 4th or go to PHOTOGRAPHIC ALPHABET SOUP Do you wonder what all the letters stand for and how you get to add them to your name? PSA of course is a short way to say Photographic Society of America. In PSA there are several divisions of competitions and interest. CSD (color slides division) is the largest division. EID (electronic imaging division) includes digital, both still and video. Nature division (ND) allows both prints and slides in competitions as do PJD (photojournalism) and PTD (photo travel). PPD is pictorial print division and has five sections which are large color, large monochrome, small color, small mono, and commercial color. Stereo division (SD) is the 3d images. If you enter your images in exhibitions and receive acceptances you may apply for star ratings if you are a member of PSA when they are earned. There are stars; 1,2,3,4, and 5. When you receive 5 stars in the same division or 10 stars in multiple divisions, you are able to apply to get your Proficiency honor (PPSA). When you have earned three levels above 5 stars in a division or 5 stars in 3 divisions an application for EPSA is allowed to show Excellence. These letters may then be added to your name. Sooo, what about APSA, FPSA, etc. These honors are earned by service and photographic activity. The first level is Associate (APSA), then FPSA, which is Fellow. There is also Hon. PSA and Hon. FPSA. These are not easy to get. The person must be proposed by a member and seconded by two others. More information on all these can be found on the PSA website. GSCCC (Gulf States Camera Club Council) is the organization made up of a council of camera clubs in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, and New Mexico. Currently there are 38 clubs. There are monthly print and slide competitions between the clubs. Once a year there is a convention hosted by a member club. In 2006 it will be in Austin. 3 DALLAS CAMERA CLUB HOW I GOT THE SHOT THRU THE LENS This month, I am highlighting an image that was submitted to the Patterns and Texture contest last August. This image, titled Self-Portrait in 21 Mirrors was submitted by Harry Rumberger and placed 3rd in the Monochrome Print Division. I felt the finished image was very unusual and thought others would be interested in the technique employed to get the finished result. Editor. Self-Portrait in 21 Mirrors - By Harry Rumberger, 3rd place in the Monochrome Prints division in the August Patterns and Textures contest. Film or Digital Digital. ISO Setting - 200; lowest ISO setting for the Nikon D100. Shot in high resolution jpeg. Memory Card Size and Manufacturer - 1 GB Lexar compact flash card. Camera Type - Digital SLR Camera Manufacturer - Nikon Camera Model - D100 Shutter Speed and Aperture - Don t remember the aperture, but it was the smallest aperture that would allow 1/60 second shutter speed. Gives greatest depth of field targeting for 1/60 sec. Shutter - slowest speed for handheld shot. Lens Choice - AF Nikkor mm lens. Lens Manufacturer - Nikon. Filter - UV. Used only as a protective filter for the lens. No significant effect on the image. Flash - Not used. I did not want reflective hot spots since I was shooting into mirrors. Location - Inside a Baltimore museum, Baltimore, Maryland. Time of Day - Daytime. Tripod - No. Cable Release - No. Special adjustments made after image was captured - In reviewing my image portfolio, I decided to take a chance and enter this unusual image in the Patterns and Texture contest. I have become fascinated with abstract or contemporary images. (Abstracts do not always appeal to everyone, especially judges.) To emphasize the patterns and textures I desaturated the image to black and white to eliminate distracting bits of color. I also used a filter in Photoshop to highlight/outline the edges. This would stress the patterns and images in the mirrors. Comments - I was walking past this 10 foot egg in the plaza of a Baltimore museum. The oval structure was covered with bright bits of colored glass imbedded in a cement structure. Interspersed among the festive colored glass fragments were small glass mirrors scattered throughout the surface. As I moved around the sculpture, I marveled at the different reflective images of myself in the various mirrors depending upon the angle. I thought this image would make an interesting entry for the end-of-year creative portraiture contest. So I put my camera on automatic focus and brought the aperture down to the smallest opening that Harry Rumberger would allow 1/60 of a second shutter speed because I was going to hand hold the camera. I then walked around the egg to where the muted sun came over my shoulder. Before I took the shot I used a pocket tissue and mouth liquid to polish up the mirrors in the sculpture. Finally, I held the camera at my waist and shot several photographs of myself. (A tripod would have gotten in the images and spoiled the shot.) To draw the judges attention to my images in the mirrors I entitled the photograph: Self-Portrait in 21 Mirrors. Final Thoughts - It is pleasant to get recognition from the judges or club members but the real purpose of the monthly contests is to challenge a photographer to become a better image maker through imagination and technical skill. While on the DCC field trip to Wichita Mountains, Harry Rumberger shot some photographs of the B&B where Janie and he stayed. One of the photographs was used in an article about the Stardust Inn, Medicine Park, OK in the magazine: Bed & Breakfast America. 3
