20 Page 20 Page 20 President s Message It is time to start thinking about your entries for the year end competitions and annual Potpourri program. Special Annual Competitions The club hosts four special competitions at the end of the fiscal year and the results are announced at the Annual Awards Banquet in April. Only one award is given in each of the four competitions. All DCC members are eligible to enter the competitions. Up to four images may be submitted for each competition. Images used in monthly competitions, including winners, are eligible. Images for these competitions shall be submitted at the first meeting in March. There is no monthly competition turn-in scheduled that month. Complete rules and instructions for preparing images can be found in the DCC yearbook and on the website. The four special competitions are: J.J. Spurlock Award for Creative Portraiture (Prints) Images of people. Marge Dance Award for Contemporary Images (Projected Images) Contemporary photography with manipulation that depicts subjects in a substantial departure from realism. Milton J. Rudick Award for Travel (Projected Images) Subject matter is unlimited, however, the images must have been taken while traveling outside the Metroplex during the last 12 months. Ken Zapp Field Trip Image-of-the-Year Award (Projected Images) Images taken on any of the club field trips during the last 12 months. Image-of-the-Year Awards In addition to the four special competitions described above, Prints and Projected Images placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in any monthly competition class are eligible for Print or Projected Image-of-the-Year Awards. Eligible prints are submitted for judging at the first meeting in March. Projected images will be pulled from the archives. Awards are presented for the three highest placing images in each category and class. These awards are also presented at the Annual Awards Banquet. Potpourri Each year members present themed audio-visual shows (projected images with sound). This program of A-V shows is called Potpourri and is presented at the first meeting in May. Because the shows are themed, participants need to start planning their shows. This means a photographer must shoot with a purpose over the next several months to build a library of images to support the theme for his or her show. A photographer who waits to develop a show will be limited to his or her current collection of images. Remember, your show must be themed and not just a simple hodge-podge showing of your photographs. So, think about your possible shows now and begin collecting the images. Shows must be turned in April 21 to provide time to compile the overall program. This is a change and we will no longer accept shows on the night of the Potpourri. Houston Brown will be directing the 2009 Potpourri and is planning a training session on developing A -V slide shows. He will also have set up a group of advisors-on-call to assist those needing help in creating their shows. Next year is a key milestone for the Dallas Camera Club as we will reach 75 years of continuous operation. We would like to celebrate this occasion. Paula Buzenius is heading up the celebration committee. It has been suggested that we create a special club t-shirt or other commemorative clothing. To do this, we need an appropriate diamond anniversary logo. So, we have decided to have a member contest with entries due at the February 3rd meeting. These will be shown and a vote taken at the February 17th meeting with the winner being announced on March 3rd. So put on your creative thinking cap on and go to work. If you would like a high resolution version of the current logo, send me an . More details to come.

21 Page 21 Reminder for upcoming event POTPOURRI Start Thinking About Potpourri Each year members may present themed slide shows of projected images. This night of shows is called Potpourri Night. For 2009 the DCC Potpourri will be May 5th. However, shows must be turned in April 21-- one meeting in advance of Potpourri night. This is a change. No longer will we accept shows for presentation on the night of the Potpourri. So why are you announcing this so far in advance? Well, because the shows are "themed", participants need to plan their shows. This means a photographer must shoot with a purpose over the next several months to build a library of images to support the theme for his or her show. Otherwise, a photographer who waits until late Spring to develop a show will be limited to his then current collection of images. Remember your show must not be a simple hodge-podge showing of your photographs. Houston Brown will be directing the 2009 Potpourri. Houston is planning a training session on developing A -V slide shows, will show one or two examples of past member slide shows and will also have set up a group of advisors-on-call to assist those needing help in creating their shows. So the point of this notice is to encourage you to think about your possible show now and to begin collecting the images to support your theme. Call for Information The Dallas Camera Club was founded in 1934 and has been in continuous operation since. The club was organized by 52 photographers to further their common interest in monochrome print making. As part of the celebration of the 75th anniversary next year, we would like to put together a brief history of the club. We are looking for milestones, events, key dates, famous members, anecdotes, or photos to use in developing this history. Please look in your archives and get the information to Paula Buzenius or Frank Richards by January 6th. Club Logo Contest We need an appropriate diamond anniversary club logo to use on various materials in commeration of the event. So, we have decided to hold a member logo design contest with entries due by the January 20th meeting. These may be submitted as digital files ( ed to Frank Richards or on CD) or sketches. You may build on the existing logo or develop an updated logo. A slogan or tag line expressing the purpose of the club, such as "Building photographers skills since 1934," may be included as part of the logo or provided separately. The club members will choose the final anniversary logo. If you would like a high resolution version of the current logo, send Frank Richards an .
