He has been very impressed with its functionality and is anxious to share it with us. Competition Judge s Reviews Turn prints and projected images in for December competition ~ The competition subject is Raw Landscape. See the definition on page 6. Printmakers please remember to submit a digital copy of your submissions at Winter Party ~ December 15 at 6:30pm It is our annual gathering for food, frivolity and festivities. If you wish, invite a spouse or guest to share this evening with you and your photo friends. We will be in meeting room 214, which is not our usual room. Listen for laughter and follow the sound to the top of the stairs. Check-in at the door. If you bring a gift, you will receive a number that determines the order in which you will select a gift during the exchange. Please bring a new gift worth $15 or more and please no white elephant gifts. We are pleased to have Dan Webster, a new member, be the MC for our gift exchange. He will keep the exchange lively and carry out the rules on the number of times a gift can be "stolen. The gift exchange table will be filled with presents large and small. Maybe a Canon D50 or Nikon D90 is waiting for us all. Oh, what a sweet dream that is! Please let Adela Rochier know by the December 1 meeting or her what food items you are bringing. Adela has a list of suggestions if you need help in deciding. After everyone has had a chance to fill themselves with holiday cuisine, the gift exchange will begin. If you think some of your friends are creative photographers, wait and see how creative they get in hiding gifts they want to keep. As gifts are opened and exchanged, we guarantee there will be lots of laughs and sounds of joy.

2 NOVEMBER MEETING HIGHLIGHTS In case you missed a meeting... Harry requested that at the first meeting of the month when competition entries are shown that everyone keep their seats at the end of the evening while we recognize the winners in the prints and projected categories. Everyone has worked hard on their entries and should be honored. He asked that the winners move to the aisle toward the end of the program and line-up to receive their award(s). All members are encouraged to start thinking NOW about entering all four of the year-end competitions - J.J. Spurlock Award for Creative Portraiture, Marge Dance Award for Contemporary Images, Milton J. Rudick Award for Travel and Ken Zapp Field Trip Image-of-the- Year Award. In addition, now it the time to start thinking about the May potpourri, which is a 3 to 5 minute slide show with a theme. Houston Brown will give a tutorial on how to create a show at the first meeting in March. Several important decisions were made at the November Executive Board meeting. Changes effecting printmakers were shifting where we place the names on the back of the prints, removing old labels and not using Styrofoam board. For the details, see the DCC Yearbook Changes article on page 5. Some members are not resizing their images to less than 600K. Please refer to your yearbook pages 14-15, if you need instructions on resizing images for competitions. The size restriction also applies to digital images for print submissions. The projected images chair plans to put resizing instructions on the web site competition entry page for those who need a refresher. Continued on page 6 It s your Turn! 4 FUTURE FIELD TRIPS There is no field trip in December. January 14 is our next field trip. We are going to two wildlife reserves Hagerman and Tishomingo. Hagerman is a stop-over and wintering grounds for Canada, snow, whitefronted, and Ross' geese along with pintail, mallard, gadwall and other ducks. Deer, turkeys, bobcats, hawks and songbirds are also abundant. Tishomingo offers an observation tower from which winter marks the best time to see wildlife such as large flocks of ducks and geese. We should see wading birds along the shoreline and waterfowl in the lake. Bald eagles are occasionally seen at the reserve. Details will be in the next newsletter. GSCCC NEWS and REQUESTS In GSCCC competitions, Jerry Comer received an Honorable Mention for his projected image "Egyptian Temple" entered in the October Pictorial competition. Together with high scores from Dennis Fritsche's "Childhood Fears", Frank Richards' "High Five" and Jeff Glass' "Persian Shield", the Dallas Camera Club came in Second Place for the October Pictorial Competition. Our Gulf States representatives are in need of PJ print and projected images for future Gulf States competitions. Submit prints to Kevin Moody and projected images to Paula Buzenius. Photojournalism is defined as pictures that tell a story and have not been manipulated. They would like more sporting images, which seem to do well. Please bring Kevin and Paula some images and support our club in the regional competition. You can contact them by . TRINITY RIVER CORRIDOR PHOTO CONTEST At the Dallas City Council meeting on November 4, Mayor Leppert presented a Certificate of Achievement to the DCC for consulting with city staff in structuring the inaugural Trinity River Corridor Photo Contest. Over 350 images from more than 100 photographers were submitted. Nine DCC members entered the contest. Frank Richards won first place in Amateur-Architecture section while Harry Rumberger received an HM in the Amateur-River section. PSA BENEFITS PSA offers its members discounts on various software packages. Members also have access to individualized critiques from experts via Personal Evaluation Services. They also hold monthly competitions in various categories for members. Nellie Bretherick has applications if you are interested. Go to: Page 4 THRU THE LENS DECEMBER 2009

5 DCC YEARBOOK CHANGES By Frank Richards Several changes have been made since the yearbook was published in May. The affected sections are reproduced below and the changes are in bold italics. MEMBER DIRECTORY (pages 28-39) Since the yearbook was issued, 28 new members have joined the club and more are joining each month. An up-to-date member directory can be obtained at any time from the club website. Just go to the Members page, scroll down to the Membership Directory paragraph and click on members-only. You will need a User ID and Password. Both may be found at the bottom of page 1 in the yearbook. One may print the roster directly from the website or export the roster to a spreadsheet. MONTHLY CLUB COMPETITIONS (pages 13-15) PREPARATION AND SUBMITTAL OF IMAGES FOR COMPETITION Preparing Color and Monochrome Prints Prints must be mounted. The print mount may be up to 16 x20 in size, but no smaller than 5 x7. Please do not to use foam board because of the increased bulk for shipping. The title, photographer s name and competition class must be on the back of each print in the upper left corner as viewed from the back. Please remove or cover old labels to prevent confusion. Turn in your prints to the Print Chairperson(s) at the competition meeting, which is the first Tuesday of the month meeting. Prints that are not properly marked are not eligible for competition. No adhesive can be exposed on sleeves or on tape used to secure images to mounts and mats. It is recommended putting your name on sleeves in case they are separated from the print. Upload a digital copy of your print entries at using the Competition Entry Form prior to the DCC competition meeting. These digital copies of your print submissions are used to print awards and to publish images in the newsletter, if they should win. On the Digital Image Submission screen, click Print Copies, fill in information about the image, use the Browse button to select the image file, and click the Submit Entry button. You will receive an auto-response indicating that the submittal has been successful. If you would like to resubmit a copy, be sure to click Yes at the bottom of the form prior to submitting the copy. The digital copy should adhere to the guidelines for preparing projected images as defined in the following section. Preparing Projected Images...no change except those below Submit: There are two ways to submit images online or on CD. Online submittal is the preferred method. Please use the online submittal unless use of CD is absolutely essential. Submit Online: Upload projected images online at using the Competition Entry Form prior to the DCC competition meeting, which is the first Tuesday of the month. On the Digital Image Submission screen, click Projected, fill in information about the image, use the Browse button to select the image file, and click the Submit Entry button. If you would like to resubmit an image, be sure to click Yes at the bottom of the form prior to submitting the image. Continued on page 6 Page 5 THRU THE LENS DECEMBER 2009

6 DCC YEARBOOK CHANGES Continued from page 5 Online entries must be received by 5 pm of the day of the DCC competition meeting. If the image or file size is too large, the image is not eligible for judging. You will receive an autoresponse indicating that the submittal has been successful. Rejected images may be resent if received before the deadline above. Burn images to CD: Label CD with photographer s name, class of competition, name of image and contest month. Turn in the CD to the Projected Images Chairperson at the DCC competition meeting. If the image or file size is too large, the image is not eligible for judging. CD s will not be returned, unless requested. NOVEMBER MEETING HIGHLIGHTS Continued from page 2 Our November 17 speaker, and also DCC member, was Jerry Cornelius. Jerry is a certified framing professional and has been framing for 33 years. He trains with the Library of Congress conservators each year. He spoke briefly about the Photo Marketing Association International (PMA), which was created in 1974 and has a diverse membership. PMA now includes a range of memory-making entrepreneurs: school photographers, commercial imaging labs, custom frame shops, scrapbook retailers, and sports and event photographers. He also briefly referred to the custom framing industry s professional trade association, Professional Picture Framers Association (PPFA). Jerry showed us how to make mat jackets that can be reused. He suggested using corners instead of the tape. Jerry proceeded to show us how to create reusable mat jackets. Then he spoke about restoration techniques of old framed prints. First, he recommended never to handle art prints without gloves. Apparently, fingerprints show up after they are applied to the print. Then he showed us how to separate an old print that is stuck to the glass. He demonstrated how to create a steamer to release the print from the glass. He told us that prints should never touch glass or wood (because of its acidic nature). He said that we should wait between 24 and 48 hours after printing before we frame an image. Jerry also spoke about how to clean framing glass. You should use a 50/50 solution of water and alcohol and should never spray the glass because the solution could seep under the glass. He spoke of the importance of matting if one chooses not to use spacers to keep the print away from the glass. Jerry gave us some tips on cutting mats and choosing mats and frames. At the end of the program, Jerry gave away some free mat samples. Here are some reference links from the presentation: The December competition is raw landscape without evidence of man. Examples of sign of man are fences, wires, footprints, signs, roads, buildings, condensation trails from aircraft, etc. Although landscapes can be broadly interpreted, you should have some land visible in the image. Avoid 100% sky, 100% water and close ups without evidence of land (rock, sand, silt, grass, forest, etc.). Page 6 THRU THE LENS DECEMBER 2009

We can cover the tasks when other members experience large burdens in their business or personal workloads, travel or are unable to perform the club task. That is why many of the officer positions are co-chairs so the workload is shared. When travel and business engagements became a burden for the hospitality chair, Gary Cowles agreed to help. Houston Brown recently took vacation and Frank Richards agreed to fill in for the November 3 meeting. This month Sharon Dorsey assumes the editorship of our newsletter with assistance from Tom Marusa. Again members willing to jump in and assume the load. We appreciate Paul Sherman s creative designs and display of information in an enticing, readable manner in the newsletters through October. This change to a new editor will allow Paul to concentrate totally on his business in these tough economic times. As you ponder accepting a leadership role in the year, remember that other members will have your back. Our membership is willing to come off the bench and help when assistance is needed. That is why I say the Dallas Camera Club is Resilient. ~Harry Rumberger DCC is a member of Dallas Camera Club Visitors are always welcome.
