No...the river was very high, so there are no bloody shots of croc attacks. During the same weeks in Africa I went to Rwanda and had the great pleasure of seeing the Gentle Giants (Mountain Gorillas) up close...not easy to reach, but what a fantastic reward after the trek. Nellie Bretherick will present two PSA Gold Medal winning photo essays and also the results of the Intercontinental Contest that took place in early September. Gary Kelly will show the program from the White Sands Balloon Invititational field trip. Also a reminder for you to plan ahead for the December 5-7 field trip to Bosque del Apache if you are going. 18 Page 18 Page 18 President s Message From the President - Mid Year Executive Committee Meeting Well, we are over half way thru the year. The club officers normally get together about this time to discuss how things have gone so far and to make any mid-course corrections that may be necessary. We also look forward to the upcoming activities. We will be meeting mid-november. If you have any suggestions about how one might improve the club, we would like to know. We would also be interested in any suggestions that you might have relative to programs for the remainder of the year. Please send me an or call me if you have any suggestions. Comer Collection: "Social/Scene" Series: Art ing Reception Date: Tuesday, November 4, 2008 Time: 2:00-4:00 p.m. Venue: Cecil & Ida Green Center Exhibition dates: October 31 - December 13, 2008 Ticket Prices: Free Curated by Ph.D. candidate Diane McGurren The second exhibition of works from the Comer Collection, Social/Scene includes photographs by June Van Cleef, Danny Lyon, Bernice Abbott, Laura Calfee, Paula Chamlee, Arthur Leipzig, Duane Michals, and Marion Post Wolcott. Though each of the photographs in the collection represents a different period in our shared social history, the works in this exhibition come together to foster our reexamination of this history. From mid-west landscapes and north-east cityscapes to the eccentricities of rural southern culture, Social/ Scene creates a dialogue between the past and the present, man and his environment, social norms and social scenes. Lecture by Lorraine Davis November 12, 7:30 pm, Visual Arts Building, AS Lorraine Davis is Director of Vintage and Contemporary Photography, Heritage Auction Galleries. The topic of her lecture is "The Famous, the Infamous, the Anonymous: A History of Portraiture in Photography." About the Comer Collection: The Jerry and Marilyn Comer Photography Collection contains almost 100 photographs and includes important examples representative of mid- to late 20th century American photography. Highlights of the collection include examples of documentary photography and photojournalism, including images of the Civil Rights movement, modern and contemporary American landscape photography, and postmodern photography. In addition, over 150 books and 200 periodicals provide a resource for research on modern and contemporary art and photography. The acquisition of this photography collection contributes to the university's mission, in terms of facilitating exhibitions to augment undergraduate instruction and graduate level research at The University of Texas at Dallas.
19 Page 19 Reminder for upcoming event Color Management Basics Bruce Faust Do you have trouble getting your prints or projected images' color to match your expectations? Come learn the basics of color management at our November 18 educational program. Frank Richards will explain the process necessary to ensure that your completed images match what the camera captured. The program will start at 6:30 PM prior to the regular meeting. November Field Trip White Rock Lake Saturday, November 15 the monthly field trip will be a general shoot around White Rock Park. This scenic area features a variety of bird-life, including black-tipped pelicans and wild parakeets. The sites that are recommended for photography are the old fish hatchery, the boathouse, the pump house, Celebration Tree Grove, Sunset Bay (pelicans), the bathhouse, the pedestrian bridge and the Corinthian Sailing Club. The pump house (which is a giant filtration plant) will be opened for photo tours from 8:00 to 12:00. A detailed map of the lake and the recommended sites will be sent to all members a week before the trip. We will meet for lunch at 11:30AM at Cafe Lago, an eclectic restaurant which features excellent sandwiches, burgers, soups, salads and few entrees. It is located on the north side of Garland Road between Buckner Blvd. and the Arboretum. Gary Kelly
20 Page 20 Page 20 GSCC Convention From the November Issue of the GSCC Newsletter A message to those who plan to attend the GSCCC convention April 2-4. The hotel site is the Homewood Suites on Poydras St. The website for hotel booking is ready and available. Go to homewoodsuites.com and choose New Orleans, La. Then select the dates you plan to spend in New Orleans. The group code for the convention is CCC. Those registered at the hotel will have a free dinner on Thursday evening before the competition and free full breakfast each morning. This location also puts you a very short distance from the streetcar line for transportation to the zoo, to the riverfront, to the French Quarter, to the aquarium, down Canal St. to the cemeteries, or a ride down St. Charles Ave. We hope to have the convention website up by the end of November with all the field trips and programs identified. Questions may be directed to: Rose Parker at parker52@cox.net. Please include the word convention in the subject line. Aquarium
21 Page 21 New Orleans Photo Opportunities Here are some photos to show some of our field trips and things to do while in New Orleans. We will be traveling to our field trip sites by streetcar. Audubon Zoo and the cemeteries are at the end of Canal St. (does not include St. Roch) and are two of the field trips. The aquarium and Harrah's casino are two things that the attendees can do while here on their own.
