The automated serves as confirmation of receipt. Digital images of print entries should be made through the form and not sent to the Print Chairs. May in Review possible DCC merchandise Gulf States Awards Potpourri New Yearbooks Irish Festival Louis DeLuca The annual PSA conference is being held in Yellowstone Park from September There will be well known photographers speaking, photo tours and model shoots. More information is at Our speaker for the August 18 meeting will be Skeeter Hagler, Pulitzer Prize winner for his images of cowboy life at the Pitchfork, 6666 and JA ranches in the Texas Panhandle. July 21 We had an exciting Member Share program at the DCC meeting on Tuesday, 21 July. Here are the presenters and their topics: Gary Kelly Video of Vincent Versace s philosophy on digital workflow The video Gary showed was part of a presentation on Epson printers. Vincent said not to follow the same workflow steps for each image. Handle each image as you envisioned it when shooting. I believe that Photoshop is not a verb, it s a noun and that the verb is the artist. I also believe that Photoshop should be used as an emery board and not a jack-hammer. David Gregory & Bob Sherman High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography Dave and Bob s presentation explained how to combine multiple exposures to produce a final image. They recommend taking five images separated by one stop, use a tripod and cable release and shoot in RAW using matrix metering. Keep the same aperture so the depth of field does not change. They said the camera captures 8 to 10 stops of light so combining multiple exposures creates greater tonality. They use Photomatix, which can be purchased for $99. Eleanore Avery How to photograph wildlife Eleanore said the key to photographing wildlife is to focus on the eyes. Also, know your subject and keep your eyes open for the action. Set your camera on continuous shooting and autofocus because you need to shoot fast. If possible, get down low to the animal s level. If in a stationary location, carry a beanbag for support of your camera, as you need to shoot hand-held. Dennis Fritsche Tonal contrast Dennis showed us how he uses Nik Software to bring out detail in an image by changing contrast. The complete collection costs $300 but a trial copy can be downloaded first. Houston Brown Taking multiple exposures on one image file in a digital camera Houston showed a couple of examples of multiple exposures on one image file. He photographed fireworks at ISO 200 and aperture F11 for 3 to 4 seconds. Houston also suggested four websites that offer on-line tutorials: and are free and and charge a fee. Suzanne Graham and Steve Newman produced the Chandor Gardens slideshow and selected the music. Ten photographers from the May 16 field trip contributed their images. Dallas Zoo trip attendees should 10 images to Gary Kelly or Mark Hansen by August 4, and those who attended the Amon Carter field trip should up to 10 images to Larry Levy. Paula Buzenius received a 1st place in Nature Projected and a 2nd in B&W Prints in last month s GSCCC contests. 75th Anniversary Clothing: The President has declared that October will be 75th Anniversary Celebration Month. Members are encouraged to wear anniversary clothing to three meetings in October: A. Bird Competition in Forth Worth on October 1 and our two regular October DCC Meetings. Paula Buzenius has order forms for t-shirts, polo shirts, patches, caps and mugs that will have the new DCC logo embroidered or printed on them. She is taking orders until the August 4 meeting.

Over 20 DCC members celebrated with Gary at the exhibit s grand opening. Gary demonstrated diverse styles for his prints that covered a range of subjects. PSA INDIVIDUALIZED PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE FOR FIRST YEAR MEMBERS Bob Johnson ~ After joining the PSA in July of last year I found an Individualized Photography Course was offered to first year members. Since I always need all the help I can get, I took advantage of this offer and signed up for the course. Jon Fishback, the DCC projected image judge for July, was the instructor and director of the course. It consisted of five project based assignments, starting with exercises on basic camera settings and continuing with a variety of specific assignments in many categories of photography. Upon completing each assignment I would send the images to Jon attached to an . He would critique each one and give his suggestions for improvement, sometime asking for the image to be re-worked. I felt his critiques were excellent and helped me down the path learning to see, which seems like a long, long path sometime. I felt the course was very well organized and caused me to move out of my comfort zone on each assignment. There is no timeline for the lessons and no pressure to work at a specific speed. However, in order to complete the course successfully you are asked to finish all assignments within a six month period and no later than by the end of the first year of membership. There is a PDF under the new member link on the PSA website that has information about the course and how to sign up After chatting with Frank Richards about my experience with PSA, he suggested I write this piece for the newsletter. Frank also suggested I look into the PSA study group program. I became a member of one of the study groups in May. In our group there are four other members, three of which who live in various places in the US and one who resides in England. Since I have just gotten involved I m anxious to see how this activity works out. 20 Page 20 Trinity River Photo Contest Dallas Camera Club is one of several supporters of a new City of Dallas Trinity River Photographic Contest. Trinity River Photo Contest Bridges Lakes Parks Nature Facilities June 30, 2009 thru September 30, 2009 The purpose of the contest is to expose a larger public to the Trinity River Corridor Project and to document the development of all bridges, lakes, parks, nature facilities as they come on stream. DCC would be one of several supporters of the photographic contest. This is a City of Dallas contest. It is NOT a DCC photographic contest. No DCC financial commitment is involved. No judges will come from the DCC. Here are some web sites which provide more in-depth information about the Trinity River Project. Please browse thru some of these sites for more background. (City of Dallas Website on project) (Raises private funds to supplement public monies to support the Trinity River Project) (About the Trinity Strand Trail which will link to Katy Trail to the Trinity River Greenbelt) (Trinity River Expeditions offers canoe and kayak access to the natural areas along the Trinity River) Learning Resources If you want a good learning resource checkout the It s mainly made up of photographers in Texas. There is quite bit of good information on the site. There are two knowledge centers where there are how-to articles on various subjects of photography. One is the Canon Digital Learning Center at For example, there is an interesting white paper on how to photograph fireworks on this site. Of course, Nikon has a similar site called Learn and Explore.at Again there are how-to articles covering different photographic situations. at this site.

22 Page 22 Stretch Yourself Enter competitions outside the DCC The World of Competition photography contests beyond DCC Wildlife photography is probably one of the most challenging and adventuresome types of photography. Most wildlife competitions include categories for landscape, people interacting with nature, insects, plants, etc. It s important to remember that submission to the major and international contests allow only global corrections to an image. These images are considered documentary. Therefore, it s important to get the image right in the camera. If you have a great shot and you feel you need to clone out sections and/or other image altering processing, then the image becomes a wildlife art photo which is appropriate to enter in local or general competitions; but, not the top tier wildlife competitions. Listed below are some major wildlife contests. Take time to visit the websites and enjoy some of the remarkable images which you will find at each one. (Note: We have DCC members who have entered and/or placed in one or more of these competitions!) Nature s Best Photography Magazine Nature s Best sponsors several competitions each year. Until September 7 it is accepting images for its Backyard contest. The Windland Smith Rice International Awards Competition is a major international competition in which winning images are displayed at the Smithsonian Museum. National Wildlife Federation Sponsors an annual wildlife contest and photo of the week contest. The annual competition has seven categories including backyard habitats and people enjoying the outdoors. Contest&s_subsrc=homepage184x200 Veolia Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year Sponsors include the BBC Wildlife Magazine and the British Natural History Museum. Coastal Bend Wildlife Photo Contest A contest held every other year. The Coastal Bend Wildlife Photo Contest is to promote public awareness about wildlife and habitat conservation in the Coastal Bend of Texas. Unique in the sense that a landowner partners with a photographer. Valley Land Fund Wildlife Photo Contest The mission of The Valley Land Fund is to preserve, enhance and expand the native wildlife habitat of the Rio Grande Valley. Like the Coastal Bend contest, this is held every other year and photographers partner with land owners. Audubon Magazine This year was a first for this competition. Watch for what wins and for next year s competition. Bird images only. Refuge Photography Contest Sponsored by the National Wildlife Refuge Association. Images taken at a US National Wildlife Refuge. Includes categories for wildlife, plants, insects, and more.

Frank Richards and his staff put in an extraordinary effort to research, catalog and write about the history of our club. You will notice throughout the book that the Dallas Camera Club has adamantly held to important time-tested traditions that relate to classical photographic techniques. Yet while avoiding fads, the club has embraced change when major and lasting technological movements have altered the field of photography. Whether the change was monochrome to color or slides to digital images, the Dallas Camera Club made adjustments. Those changes came about because the DCC has had dedicated people who served the club and participated in the executive decisions that guided the organization. As we approach the mid-point of this club year, consider how you could serve the club. Next year we will need numerous members to fill chairperson positions. We need members to teach our training sessions and share their special photographic skills. We even have numerous short-term projects where members can become involved and make a difference.
