Please contact the other people to decide who will brings drinks, etc., so everyone doesn t bring the same thing. Thank you. CONTEST TOPICS: SEPTEMBER - Open OCTOBER - Wildflowers NOVEMBER - Open DECEMBER - Abstract JANUARY - Open FEBRUARY - High Key or Low Key MARCH - End of Year Contests Further definitions are in the new yearbook. THE BIRD COMPETITION In 1960, Targut Ulag, President of the Dallas Camera Club, and James Midgett, President of the Fort Worth Camera Club, started the annual Dallas/Fort Worth inter-club competition that has come to be known as The Bird Competition. Along with a year s worth of bragging rights, the winning club takes custody of The Bird, an original sculpture donated by Emily Guthrie Smith, a Fort Worth native and a nationally-recognized artist. Submissions for The Bird Competition will be accepted at the September 16 meeting. Each member is encouraged to enter examples of his or her best work (up to four prints and/or slides). Print entries must be the original work of the entrant, but commercial prints made from slides/negatives exposed by the entrant can be submitted for competition. These may be prints or slides that have not been submitted for regular competition. Get ready for some great food, fellowship, and photography at this year s Bird Competition, where the Dallas uh, that is, the lucky camera club will once again win The Bird. The location of the contest alternates yearly. Since Fort Worth is hosting this year, we will follow their rules for maximum print sizes. FWCC allows print submissions up to 16 x 20, with a mat size of 20 x 24. FIELD TRIPS THRU THE LENS Fri. to Sun., Sept. 5 to 7 - American Indian Powwow - Grand Prairie This 2 1/2-day event is FREE. Parking is $2 per car. Several hundred Native Americans, representing dozens of tribes across the United States, will take part in this celebration. Powwow is a time to remember. Indian people come together to dance, sing, meet old friends and make new ones. The powwow is a link to the American Indians past. You are asked to respect and honor this. Do not touch the dancers costumes or photograph without permission. The costumes worn by many dancers are often treasured heirlooms passed down through generations. Dance styles vary according to the tribe. The main ones are: Men s Traditional - The oldest form shows stalking of game or tracking an enemy. Men s Fancy Dance - One of the most strenuous, originated in Oklahoma. Men s Grass Dance - Began among the Plains Tribes to flatten the tall grasses for a new camp. Ladies Buckskin - The oldest among women s dances. Ladies Fancy Shawl - The newest and represents a butterfly in flight. Jingle Dance - Began among Northern Tribes and is associated with healing. Requires intricate footwork. Drum & Song - Drum sets rhythm of the dance and tempo of the song. The single beat represents Mother Earth and the double beat stands for Humans. TIME: Dance Schedule: Fri. evening at 8 PM, Sat at 2 PM and 8 PM, Sun at 2 PM. Crafts: 10 AM to 8 PM. DIRECTIONS: Trader s Village, 2602 Mayfield Rd., Grand Prairie. Located 5 miles south of Six Flags, just off Hwy 360 near I-20. Telephone: Sat. Oct Autumn Trails - Winnsboro, TX Fri. Sat.& Sun. Nov. 14,15,16 - Forbidden Gardens & Anahuac Nat. Wildlife Refuge - Katy The Forbidden Gardens is a project of a native Chinese man who settled in Katy, TX and became wealthy. He wanted to expose the Americans to his native land so he reproduced the Forbidden City in Beijing and also reproduced the army of buried soldiers in Xian. It is really something to see if you can't go to China. Anahuac was Patricia Steele's favorite place to photograph birds, alligators, etc. Katy is 10 miles west of Houston and Anahuac is just a little further east of Houston on the Gulf. Sat. Jan 17, Lake Tawakoni Dam 2
