1 IN Focus Des Plaines Camera Club Des Plaines, IL September 2010 Inside This Issue Welcome Back From the President Why Compete? Club Members display artwork End-of-Year DPCC Competition Results Meet the Club Member Upcoming Schedule September 2011 Monday, Sept. 13 7pm 9pm Club meeting - NEW LOCATION: 1990 White Street, Des Plaines, IL, Arndt Park Fieldhouse Saturday & Sunday Sept 18 & 19 Community Service Des Plaines Fall Festival Monday Sept 27 CLUB COMPETITION October 2011 Monday, Oct 11 Club Meeting, Bring your camera night Club members reflected within The Bean Welcome to the season! Our first meeting of the Des Plaines Camera Club will be held on Monday, September 13 at 7 p.m. We have moved our meeting location to Arndt Park Field House, 1990 White Street in Des Plaines. Our summer photo ops were plentiful and varied thanks to Tom Mulick, our program director. Tom is now enjoying his recent retirement by extensive traveling. In May our club had a photo shoot and workshop at the Chicago Botanical Gardens. Club Member Bill Bishoff, a talented and experienced photographer for the CBG showed club members ways to set up for photographing plants. June saw several night shoot photo ops, with 2 evenings of additional practice in Des Plaines before going out to Buckingham Fountain and the surrounding area for more blue light and night shooting. 2 DES PLAINES CAMERA CLUB OFFICERS President..Jerry Hug Vice President.Tom Mulick Treasurer.Irene Szilagyi Secretary Kay Michaely Program Director Tom Mulick IN Focus Editor Sue Lindell The beautiful Mandir Temple in Bartlett was also visited in June, with a stop at the Willowbrook Wildlife Rehabilitation Center on the way home. On the last weekend in June a few members went to the Chicago Gay Pride parade for memorable shots of parade spectators and participants. In July there was the Des Plaines Fourth of July parade, and later in the month a group of club members spent an afternoon touring Chicago, starting out with a guided tour riding a double-decker bus and then independently on foot throughout the city. Jerry Hug, DPCC President From the President: Another summer has passed and now comes the best color photo season in the mid-west. We all need to continue to explore the changing colors very soon. I have a bush that has changed and already the leaves are falling. Did I get out and shoot ion time for the peak? No. This was my mistake. Either the bush is dying and put out its best last color for the last year or the heat and dryness just accelerated the season. Farmers are telling everyone that crops are early. That could be a sign for us to get ready for the changing leaves very soon. August brought Tall Ships to Navy Pier and the end of the month had another community event, the Des Plaines Community Extravaganza. Club members were asked to take a variety of pictures there for the Des Plaines Youth Commission. State Senator Dan Kotowski with several club members at the Community Extravaganza. 3 From the President continued: Well here we go. A new meeting location (Arndt Park Fieldhouse). A new DPCC class has started (Lightroom 3). New members interested in learning more about photography and other members excited to share some of their new images from this Summer. As our first competition draws near, new members may be especially nervous to actually enter this important aspect of club participation. The following article was published in the May 2009 PSA Journal. Why Compete? Written by James R. Lowell The reason for moving to Arndt Park Fieldhouse is that we have out grown the available rooms at Prairie Lakes. We have the building to ourselves on meeting nights. The club gets to use a large meeting room, washrooms, kitchen and excellent locked storage for our equipment. Here are the best ways to Arndt Fieldhouse. If you live North of Oakton Street, take Oakton to White Street (Stop Light at Gigios Pizza) and turn South. Drive South to the Fieldhouse. IN Focus Newsletter Page 3-7
4 From the President continued: Near Touhy or further South: Take Touhy to Birch (Iroquois School stoplight) and go North on Birch and then left on Howard Street. What makes our camera club so good? The officers are dedicated to making our DPCC a friendly club and dedicated to helping members learn more about taking better photographs What makes our club work? Everyone pitching in and helping on projects or taking responsibility of leadership and/or sharing one s skills. Thanks to Kay Michaely, Mark Belter, Tom Mulick, Sue Lindell, Dave Waycie, Joe & Liz Tarlos, Eleanor Gross and Jerry Hug who photographed the Des Plaines Community Extravaganza on August 28 th and sold donated photographs (small club fund raiser). Club Members display images Club members George and Bridget Doerner have submitted artwork for display at the Arlington Heights Historical Museum Heritage Gallery at 112 W. Fremont in Arlington Heights. The display will be available from September 11, 2010 to December The Museum is open Friday - Saturday from 1:30-4:30 PM. In addition, two of George's photos have been submitted for a display at the Arlington Heights Village Hall. The Village Hall is open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Monday - Friday. George Lepp Seminar George Lepp is considered one of the leading nature photographers in the country and writes a monthly article for Outdoor Photographer Magazine. Jerry Hug is part of the team of Photographic Society of America, or PSA bringing George to the Chicago area November 6, Although our club is a member of PSA, the discount applies to individual members only. See the new club Website Calendar Nancy Strahinic, Greg Pickle, Tom Mulick and Jerry Hug are going to also look into establishing a better means of displaying club members photos on line. 5 Upcoming Club Events and Photo Ops September, 2010 DPCC End-of-Year Competition Results Here are the results of our club competitions from the season. Congratulations to all participants. Sept. 17 &18, 2010 Our next camera club project is taking photographs for the Park District Fall Fest at Lake Park on Howard/Lee and Touhy. Last year at this event we took pictures of people in a small staged area, handed over our memory cards and they immediately printed out the pictures for those attending and handed the card back for us to shoot the next family. We need club members to help out for an hour or so from Noon to 6:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday, September 18 & 19. Bring plenty of memory cards! To help at the Fall Festival, contact Jerry at jerryhug@comcast.net or IN Focus Newsletter Page 5-7

7 Meet the Club Member (Ed. Note: This is the first in an occasional series of articles to help DPCC members get to know others in the club. As a debut article, our own president, Jerry Hug is featured. Other club members will be featured throughout the season. ) Jerry Hug became interested in photography in 1958 while employed as a summer tour guide in the Canadian Rockies. His fiancé s father loaned him a camera, and taught him a bit about f-stops and shutter speeds. Jerry set out with some slide film and became hooked after seeing the results of his efforts. In 1970, Jerry and his wife bought a home that included a complete darkroom in the basement. Jerry began to pursue photography in earnest. I got a view camera and studied with some of Ansel Adams assistants and other great photographers around the country. The darkroom outgrew the basement set-up and Ernie Stolie and I rented space in an office in downtown Des Plaines and our darkroom expanded into 4 rooms. Jerry has a special interest in landscape photography, whether rural, scenic or urban. He is starting a few new projects of recording areas in all 4 seasons. About 10 years ago I started a series on the Des Plaines River and I plan to pick up on that project and do more. Most of those images are in infrared. Jerry s technical interest includes HDR and infrared. He works exclusively in digital and uses Canon cameras. His big camera is a Canon Mark III 1Ds. His point and shoot is a Canon G11. For infrared he uses Canon 5D and a Canon G10 which were modified to infrared. I used to go shooting only in the early morning and late evening, but with HDR and IR my time schedule has expanded into the mid-day. Infrared likes noontime bright sun. Jerry tells us. Jerry was told about the Des Plaines Camera Club in the late 1980s, but didn t officially join until 1990, making this season his 20 th with our club. When asked what he likes best and least about photography, Jerry says he enjoys the challenges of making images others can enjoy. He appreciates digital freeing him from the chemicals of darkroom days, as well as having more control over the images he makes. On the Bright Side by Jerry Hug IN Focus Newsletter Page 7-7
