1 IKEBANA INTERNATIONAL Sacramento Chapter #26 ORIGAMI DEMONSTRATION AND WORKSHOP Monday, November 17, 2014 at 12:00 Noon East Room, Shepard Garden & Arts Center 3330 McKinley Blvd., Sacramento, CA Bring your sack lunch. Tea will be provided Origami is Paper Magic - Workshop led by Michiko Takamura Guests and prospective members welcome! November 2014 This month our Chapter welcomes our Chapter historian Michiko Takamura who will present an Origami demonstration and workshop. She requests all participants bring a sharp pencil (not a pen) and your reading glasses if you use them. Michiko will provide the other materials needed to create Origami. Michiko learned the art of Origami and also studied Sogetsu School of Ikebana in Japan. She received a 4 th grade Sogetsu teacher certificate over 45 years ago in Tokyo. Since 1974, she has lived first in Canada and then in Charlotte, North Carolina, before moving to Penn Valley, near Grass Valley, CA in 2009 after her husband retired. She has taught Origami in both Canada and North Carolina. MJ Kelly, Program Vice-President Dear members, PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Fall is upon us! The color changes provide us a greater range of vibrant color selections for our arrangements. Enjoy it in all its glory! Our 55 th anniversary was celebrated on September 15th. 2 were enjoyed by many members and friends. Co-founder Molly Kimura was able to attend as were many past presidents. Molly spoke about our Chapter s first banquet and shared other historical facts. The Joy of Flowers demonstration by Yvonne Turner was lovely and informative. The board provided a tasty beautifully decorated cake for all to enjoy. Tokyo HQ sent a letter of congratulations and a certificate to acknowledge our outstanding contributions for our Sacramento Chapter s 55 th Anniversary. $100 in donations to support My Sister s House was collected. The Shepard Garden & Arts Center Fall Art, Crafts and Plant Fall sale was very successful thanks to the hard work of co-chairs Candy Davidson and Judy Lawson and many other volunteers. Thanks also are due Marie LeDonne who created two arrangements for the My Sister s House High Tea which was held at the same time as the sale. Your efforts are very much appreciated. Remember our exciting program this month, Origami, Please bring anyone you know who appreciates or is interested in learning Origami. Come join us and come say hi. We love to see you. The ability to purchase floral supplies from local wholesale houses is an added reason to join our Chapter this year. Frances Brookey, Membership Vice-President FALL PLANT SALE REPRISE The Shepard Garden & Arts Center Fall Art, Crafts and Plant Sale was held the weekend of October 4-5. Our Chapter netted $536, including a $20 donation. Thanks to the hard work and contributions of members (and their families) it was a success in all respects. Asian art and garden objects were very popular sale items Co-Chairs Candy Davidson and Judy Lawson appreciate and thank everyone who brought plants and other items for sale and/or worked hard selling items during the sale. These include: Natasha Liu, MJ Kelly, Frances Brookey, Elise Mattison, Helen Tashima, Michiko Takamura, Marie LeDonne, Sue Bordner, Rhody Vallejo, and Kim Vu. Special thanks to former member Jane Matteson, to Bob Lawson who made colorful and informative signs for Judy s horsetail plants, and to Kim and Ung Vu for their help with clean-up on Sunday afternoon. 2 IN MEMORIAM

3 Sacramento Chapter #26 extends its condolences to associate member Fusako Hoyrup whose husband passed away in late September. MARK YOUR CALENDAR Monday, January 19, Field trip to the Kikkoman Soy Sauce factory at 1000 Glenn Drive in Folsom. Our guided tour begins at 9:30 am will last 45 minutes. Because we must let Kikkoman know the number coming, sign-ups will be taken in early January. Meet at the Shepard Garden & Arts Center at 8:00 am if you would like to carpool. Watch for final details in the January newsletter. Saturday, March 21, Bus trip to the San Francisco Bay Area Ikebana International Chapter #31 biennial Ikebana Flower Show in Golden Gate Park s San Francisco County Fair building. Our bus will leave from the Arden Fair Mall parking lot at 8:00 am and return by 6:00 pm. The price for this trip is expected to be $40. Sign-ups will be taken and tickets available for purchase beginning in January. This trip is open to everyone interested in floral design and the show promises to be outstanding.
