1 Honolulu Chapter 56 / President s Message Issue No. 90, April 2017 Earl Shimabukuro I am about to go to Okinawa for the first time, this month. A bunch of us are going to the 11th Ikebana International World Convention. It should be as exciting as the 10th convention, five years ago. Man, where did the time go. Each time I think about the last convention and now, there is a lot that has happened and I have grown a lot from being an ikebana person. I have been blessed by the friendship through flowers motto. I hope to see a lot of that in Okinawa. As a delegate to the convention, hopefully I can contribute to the direction our organization wishes to go. I hope I can bring that world energy back to our group here in Hawaii. So, it s an exciting spring, for me and have a great spring to you too. Evening joy noontime silence spring rain Happy Easter! Shimabukuro Chora Kimono Tour at the University of Hawaii Masami Lachmann On February 24, 2017, Consul General Yasushi Misawa, Mrs. Yoko Misawa and I (Masami Lachmann) received a tour of the kimono collection at the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, Fashion Design and Merchandising at the University of Hawaii at Manoa led by Dr. Shu-Hwa Lin, who was a guest speaker at I. I. Chapter 56 s New Year s Luncheon at Oahu Country Club. There were fabulous Uchikake (bridal robes). The article titled Kimono Treasure about our kimono tour with a photo is in the *E-bulletin the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) notes. We strongly recommend that I. 2 IKEBANA INTERNATIONAL HONOLULU CHAPTER 56 Ikebana at Washington Middle School Carol Murakami On March 8 Sensei Ellen Kondo with the assistance of Kimiko May and Carol Murakami met at Japanese language teacher Neal Takamoto s class to demonstrate an Ikebana arrangement for his class. Because of the State wide testing going on, the scheduled time had to be moved up to the first class of the day and the class was mixed with a few first year students with the advanced class. The allotted time was also short, 50 minutes, so Sensei Kondo just went directly into the arrangement they were going to make using green dianthus, pussy willow and solid aster. Mr. Takamoto planned to go over the background information on Ikebana with his students the next day. The theme of the arrangement was Spring in a field of grass with Nanohana (Rape blossom) in bloom. The green dianthus represented the grass and solid aster the Nanohana. There were 13 students and the teacher participating. Two green dianthus stems were placed close together to form a fluffy mass. The solid aster and pussy willow were then placed in between the mass to complete the arrangement. The session was a little rushed but it turned out okay. Plum Blossoms in Japan It looks similar to sakura, but once you smell the plum blossoms when you approach the tree you will immediately realize the difference. Plum flowers start blooming earlier than most flowers, around the end of winter, and is often seen as a sign that winter is truly ending. The history of plum blossoms in Japan is long. After the Edo period, we first think of sakura when we talk about flower watching. Before then we usually thought of plums. Plum flowers were loved by the Japanese for a long time and are still used as a popular motif, even in family marks. They are still a very familiar flower to us. (Source:
