A Call to Artists for SculpturePainters 2015 Submission Deadline: Sept. 15, 2014 Artist Selection: Sept. 30, 2014 Blanks Delivered to Artists: Oct Finished Work Delivered: April 2015 Installation/Reception: May 2015 Dragonfly Auction: May 2016 The Sculpture Walk committee will select the 10 best submissions, based on their conceptual strength, originality, and workmanship. These will be presented for 12 months in locations throughout Bemidji.

2 The SculpturePainters Program Larger-than-life fiberglass sculptures, designed and created by regional artists, on a one year public display. All original works are auctioned at the end of year to fund additional public art programming. While the base form of each sculpture will remain the same, each fiberglass sculpture will have a unique design. The SculpturePainters project is a public art program that celebrates the regional arts community, contributes to economic vitality and quality of life in Bemidji, and provides access to public art for all residents and visitors. To all interested Artists The Bemidji Sculpture Walk is excited to open a call for 2D artists and artist team to paint Giant Dragonflies! This project will be similar to the Beaver project of fiberglass dragonfly blanks will be delivered to 10 chosen artists who will complete each sculpture according to their own designs and materials, as proposed at time of submission. All qualified finished works will be displayed in Bemidji as part of the Annual Sculpture Walk in spring Artists are asked to submit digital samples of their work to be juried. See details bellow, and at Benefits of Participating This project will provide optimum exposure for the artist s work. The artists will garner media attention throughout the region and beyond. Each selected artist will be featured on all marketing materials, including Online and in our Annual Walking Guide. At each installation site a plaque will be placed acknowledging the artist. At auction time artists will be celebrated and introduced to the patrons who bid on their work. Each artist is awarded a $ stipend and also receives a portion of the sale (25%) when their statue is offered up for auction in April of Remaining dollars earned by the Auction are used for the general operation costs for the Bemidji Sculpture Walk. 3 The Application Process 1. Each artist is invited to submit up to a maximum of three (3) designs. However, only one design per artist will be awarded if chosen by the selection committee. 2. Artists must use the sculpture two-part template (right and left profile) to illustrate their design. Work must closely resemble the proposal and be finished to committee s satisfaction. 3. Artist application and supporting materials must be postmarked by Sept. 15, Artists must be aware of the project time line before accepting a contract to paint a sculpture to ensure that they will be available to paint the blank during the allotted time. 5. Artists whose designs are selected for exhibition will be provided a life-sized, blank fiberglass form and will be given a $250 Stipend to purchase supplies/ and for transport. 6. Artists should determine the supplies needed to create their vision and may purchase more supplies at their own expense. 7. Artist teams are welcome, but one person must be designated as the lead designer and contact person. 8. Final clear coat finish will be provided by BSW prior to installation. Design Criteria The SculpturePainters Project will be an interactive public art event. Therefore: 1. Artists may paint, sculpt, transform, or adorn their animal sculpture. 2. Designs should be created with weather-resistance, general durability, and public safety in mind. 3. Final sculptures must be representative of original designs submitted for inclusion. 4. Artists should remember that the audience will be broad-based and of all ages. Designs should be appropriate for public display. Designs that are political, religious, violent, or overly sexual in nature will not be accepted. The Committee retains the right to accept or reject any design for any reason. 5. The Committee welcomes designs of an original, vibrant, humorous, and uplifting nature, and strongly encourages creative representations that maintain respect for the representative animal. 6. The use of corporate emblems is discouraged. If used at the request of a commissioned sponsor, corporate emblems shall be discreet and limited to a surface area of no larger than 3 x Sponsors must have expressed written permission to use the emblem or any registered trademark. 8. The contact points by which the sculptures will be attached to their bases cannot be altered or obstructed. 9. Objects attached to the sculpture must be affixed so that they cannot be removed easily, and must be weather-resistant and fade-resistant. 10. Artists may alter the basic form, but may not compromise its structural integrity. 11. Artists may add items to their fiberglass forms; proposed additions must be identified clearly at the time of original submission. 12. Submissions will be evaluated by the Committee to ensure they conform to these guidelines. The review panel may reject any design that does not adhere to these guidelines. The review panel has full authority to make the final selection. 13. Selected artists will need to follow preparation and painting guidelines per Cowpainters LLC, the manufacturer of the fiberglass sculpture. Additional Technical Information will be provided to selected artists. 14. The Bemidji Sculpture Walk will apply a final protective clear-coat to the sculptures prior to their public placement. 15. A $ Stipend will be provided to each chosen artist. All additional supplies as well as Transportation from and back to the delivery point (in Bemidji) are the responsibility of each artist. Page 3

4 Selection Process Applications will be reviewed to ensure that designs conform to the standards outlined. 1. Bemidji Sculpture Walk Committee will serve as the official judges for all design submissions. One month after call for entries closing deadline, the committee will perform an initial review of each design to ensure each design meets official guidelines and may progress to the second review. 2. All submitted designs meeting the project criteria will be compiled into a Portfolio of Artists. 3. Remaining designs will undergo a final Selection Committee jury, who will choose a limited number to fulfill the current year s quantity of available sculptures. 4. All artists will be notified by and postal mail as to whether their submission was selected or not. 5. Sculpture Walk personnel will work with the artists to arrange for payment of the supply stipend and pickup/ delivery of the sculpture. Production Process 1. Artists will create their sculptures in their studios or homes. Artists are responsible for transporting the work to and from the designated headquarters (to be announced). 2. The manufacturer primes the surface of each blank. Unless artists add to the exterior of the dragonfly in some way, artists will not need to reapply a primer. Acrylic paint, artificial resin paint or two-component paint can be used to paint or spray a design on the dragonfly. 3. Artists do not need to apply a clear coat finish on their sculptures, but should take into account while painting their sculpture that one will be applied. The clear coat will be applied and funded by the Committee. 4. Artists are not responsible for the installation or removal of the sculpture. Artists should be available for any possible touch-up work that may be required once the exhibit is underway. If the artist is not available, another artist may be asked to perform the work. 5. Bemidji Sculpture Walk reserves the right to prevent the display of a statue if the final design is not approved by the Committee. State of finish, ruggedness, and suitability of subject matter are all considerations. Artist Rights and Responsibilities By submitting your application, you confirm that: 1. You are the original creator of your design. 2. Your design does not infringe on intellectual property rights (for example, trademark, copyrights, trade dress, design patent). 3. To the extent anyone else has contributed to your design, you shall obtain a signed, written agreement assigning all rights in his/her contribution to you. 4. By submitting your application you assign all rights, title and interest in your design proposal, accompanying sketches and derivative works to Bemidji Sculpture Walk. 5. If the sculpture is approved, BSW will continue to own such rights. You will be acknowledged as the artist(s); however, all copyrights, including the rights to reproduce your design, create copies or reprint your design in books, will be owned by Bemidji Sculpture Walk. 6. If your design is not approved or selected, BSW will return the entire right, title and interest. Artists may submit up to three designs. If you submit more than one design, please provide the required number of copies of each application element. Page 4
