1 Terrence Powell BWG News Editor Next meeting is: December 2, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. This is our annual Christmas party and dinner. We will be meeting at the Brasstown Community Center in Brasstown. The center is located on Settawig Road near the post office. This is our Club s annual ornament exchange. Bring one ornament and get one back. Everyone is cordially welcome to attend. Please bring a covered dish either vegetable, salad, or dessert. There is a stove for hot items, and a refrigerator for cold. BWG will furnish the spiral ham and the drinks. Sorry, no coffee will be available! If you happen to have something that you don t need in your woodturning shop, please contribute it to the raffle. 2 President's Corner- Another great demo by Steve Pritchard. Many thanks Steve. We had a good turnout for the woodturning class at Hayseville HS on Nov. 9th. Many thanks to Don Marks, Tom Garrett, Theresa Lovello, Matt Cowart, and Susan Shortman. We had 6 students in the morning and 15 in the afternoon. These students are our future woodturners and club members so we need to support them whenever possible. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at the Dec. 2nd Christmas Party. Until then, keep the wood turning and the chips flying, and as always, be safe. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Meeting John opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and introduced the visitors. We had 19 members present and seven visitors. The visitors were Herb Weitzel, Jack and Sharon Lipkin, Roger Purdik, and Susan Shortman. Thanks to the Mountain Laurel club, from Clarkesville, GA, for the visit. John asked for volunteers for teaching at the high school in November. If you will help, please contact John or me so that we can be sure we have enough help in the classroom. It was moved and seconded that the present slate of officers be re-elected. With approval of all motion was passed. John has applied to AAW for grant to help maintain and equip the lathes in the high school shop. It was approved by the club that we meet on three occasions next year that are not the first Saturdays. By doing this we were able to schedule demonstrators that teach at the Folk School. Those three dates and demonstrators are January 13, Rudy Lopez, March 31 (April meeting), Mike Chandler, and November 10, Steve Cook. John also announced the video on the AAW website on grinding a mini bevel. John also announced the next meeting at Brasstown Community Center. That will be our annual Christmas party and ornament exchange. Bring an ornament and take one home. Next, John introduced our demonstrator Steve Pritchard from Winston, GA. Steve Pritchard Turning a Pet Urn with Threaded Lid Steve began by telling that he turned mostly pet urns. He stated that the size is crucial as for each pound of weight of the animal or human, there must be at least one cubic inch of space. When asked about how he measured the volume, he showed us a stick he uses. He fills the item with rice and then takes that rice and pours it into a PVC pipe and puts the measuring stick in to see how much volume there is. He also stabilizes the

3 wood he uses for collars that are to be threaded. He says that most woods can be used for threading if they are stable. He uses a Jamison Hollowing System to do the hollowing. He drills a 2-inch hole in the top. This allows for the ashes of a human to be poured into the urn easier. He also uses a video camera instead of a laser light to check the thickness of the vessel. He makes the threaded collars; then begins threading with the female collar. He uses a Baxter Thread Master tool to cut the threads. The cutter head is put into the head stock and the collar to be treaded is on a 2-way sliding jig. After checking the threads and a little sanding he can then epoxy the female collar to the urn and the male collar to a finial. It was a very interesting demonstration.
