November Busy October The Month started off with the Annual Fall Picnic at the Nipomo County Park.

Members attending brought a wide selection of side dishes and deserts. Before and after, several daring turners took turns at the club lathe in an UNOFFICIAL EGG CUP RACE.

Chefs Gordon Rowland and Lindsay Pratt followed their usual practices in serving up great Top Block Beef and Salmon. Members attending brought a wide selection of side dishes and deserts. Before and after, several daring turners took turns at the club lathe in an UNOFFICIAL EGG CUP RACE. The goal was to turn an egg cup in two minutes. 3 Page 3 P A G E 3 October Meeting We welcomed a visitor from Oregon, Bob Jesson who visits every time he s in town and also came to the next days demo. We also welcome Ted Elder from Shell Beach and Greg Mac Dougal from Santa Margarita as new members, Gents, we hope to see a lot of participation in the chapter A short discussion was next regarding whether we should seek a grant from AAW to secure money to purchase a new club lathe, hoping that updated version would have variable speed and reverse. Some models offered also have a rotating head to make larger piece turnings available. Bill Kandler will look into wording, Will Hanneman has offered to help with some help from his wife Kathy. Terry announced that several CD s by Eli Avisera have been received to be part of the Chapter library. Challenge for October The challenge for the month was to turn a plate or platter, a better than usual participation showed up this date. Too many to photograph each one

4 Show and Tell; Bill Kandler started off this session with a description of how he is attempting to incorporate a Navajo pattern in an up coming segmented vessel, it involves several pieces in each block, GOOD LUCK, cutting & Gluing. Gordon Rowland showed the result of the pen holder that Bill Kandler started. Gordon also showed a mounting device used as a JAM chuck used for bowl finishing. He also showed a piece in progress, taking a partially turned bowl from George and sculpting into a flower shaped bowl, looking to see finished product George Paes showed an Urn with a different twist, the screw cap on the bottom mounted on a tri leg base. (Editors note, Gordon s suggestion) Gerald Davis presented a Steel Leveling device purchased at the Ornamental Turners Mini Symposium. Its purpose is to compensate for any movement when switching for lathe to Rose engine lathe. Our Visitor Bob Jesson offered for inspection a candle holder and a laminated pen. Tom Bullock showed a Gavel and striker plate turned from Osage Orange to be given to the tree manager for SLO County in exchange for more of the same. Challenge for November is COASTERS Demonstration time Wrapping up October we had the privilege of attending a demo by Soren Berger from New Zealand in Bill Kandlers studio Soren started with basic cuttings of a spindle using primarily a spindle gouge. He demonstrated how with practice one can use this chisel to do a multitude of cuts. Practice, Practice, Practice and more Practice. Next was his new to him product in that of a Lamp Shade turned from Green Pine to a very thin wall, about 1/64th. It is turned with a reinforcing rib at top and bottom. Hardware is then attached to be able to secure to a lamp fixture. See photos on next page. After lunch break, he turned a bowl using again, Green Pine,using his ring clamp that eliminated need for glue block or spigot for holding.

This is a somewhat tricky venture as the handle is spinning at a fairly good rate so care in placing the tool rest and fingers must be considered before starting the lathe. 6 Announcements and DATES to remember The next scheduled meeting will be held on Saturday November 20th, good time to have your coasters ready for Thanksgiving Day meals and drinks. The same place, Odd fellows Hall on Dana St in SLO, 9:00 AM starting time. The Holiday Luncheon will be held on Sunday December 12th,at Steamers of Pismo Beach, gathering time should be about 12:45 with lunch served at1:30. Be reminded that we have a gift exchange, bring something and go home with something, come empty go home same way. A turned gift is always welcome The turned items by the demonstrators will be drawn for the spouses. Lunch fee is $26.00 per person, checks can be sent to Terry Cohen at 375 Plancha Way, Arroyo Grande, CA or given to him at the meeting. Cut off date is Saturday December4th as he will have to give the restaurant a count. Be sure to list Chicken. Tri Tip or Salmon as your choice. A demonstration is scheduled for Friday May 20, 2011 by Dave Springett, location to be determined. Ralph Wessel has alerted me that Jean Gandy, Bob s widow, has said that she would like some help in selling off some of Bob s equipment. Included is a lathe and 3 Shopsmith Machines, some tools and wood.
