Nick Matos will be addressing clear gloss finishes. As we all know from seeing Nick s work in our Instant Gallery he places high emphasis on finishing. He has offered to share some of his techniques and experience with the club. There will be a discussion on saw blades by Cecil Cravens. Cecil has many years experience with all facets of woodworking. There is little doubt we can all benefit from his sharing yet another part of that experience. The President s Challenge for May is a segmented (or laminated) turning. Be sure to also bring some of your recent work for the Instant Gallery and something to contribute to the raffle. His latest demo at our April meeting was no exception. Norm seems to have the ability to know what tips and techniques are of most interest to his audience. While it is impossible to summarize all his useful recommendations in one short article, some highlights were: Bowl gouge most useful tool in his arsenal. Scrapers definitely have their place. Use any tool that helps you do the job you want to do. Wolverine type sharpening jigs highly recommended for beginners/novices. Put a felt tip/pad on the tool clamp. Avoid having pith in a bowl; it almost always causes problems. If limb piths are necessary drilling a hole in the pith can help avoid problems. Bowl thickness/thinness not as important as having the bowl feel right. Norm has been turning for eleven years and he turns a lot of bowls among other things. He definitely seems to have a no nonsense approach to his work. We very much appreciate Norm agreeing to do another demo and thank him for the time and effort he put into it.

Word is they are having a lot of fun and actually selling quite a few items. Check with any of them for details.

3 Page 3 Please Notice Change in Date of October Meeting The date for our Autumn Outdoor Meeting has been changed from October 13 to October 6. This was done to avoid conflict with the Pink Palace Crafts Fair in Memphis (October 12-14). Several of our members and visitors attend or participate in this annual event. If you are not familiar with this huge craft fair check it out at WTW Nearing Completion of Third Year Time flies when you re having fun! It doesn t seem like three years since West Tennessee Woodturners was organized. And it doesn t seem like a year has past since we last paid our annual membership fees, but it has. They are due June first so please see Bill Smith and work out some sort of payment schedule. presided. There were 26 members and 1 guest present. This will be done if change is acceptable to our scheduled demonstrator. Bob asked for suggestions for demonstrators. If you have a suggestion please see him. The months of August/September are still available. The President s Challenge for May is a segmented (or laminated) turning. In July we will have a five hour demonstration by Cliff & Bill Valentine. They will turn a cowboy hat. We will start at our regular time and take a break for lunch. Lumber: Bulletin Board I was at the Sweetlips Greenhouse 3705 Sweetlips road, Henderson Tn a couple of weeks ago and the owner has some 200 sq. ft of sawmill cherry that he is looking for an offer on.
