2 OPENING COMMENTS: President Ralph Callander opened the meeting at 7:00PM. We get gift certificates from Craft Supply and Ralph encouraged us to purchase from them. Their web site is Ralph encourages everyone to join AAW, and said the magazines alone is worth it. All old issues can be found online for members. AAW membership and information can be found at If ten of more members attend an AAW Symposium, a discount is given to those who attend. NEW BUSINESS: March 2019 Events: o March 23rd Native Plant Day at Bill Sadowski Park, SW 79th Ave, Palmetto Bay, FL Ralph is looking into the logistics. More information to follow. Ten percent of Sales will be donated to the Native Plant Society o March 31 st, Deering Estate Seafood Festival. We will only be able to use one 10 x 20 tent to be divided for both Sales and Demonstration. Ralph is looking into the logistics. More information to follow. Ten Percent of Sales will be donated to the Guild. Ralph passed around a sign up sheet for both events, and received a good response. Ralph will be contacting Scott Neufeld, Robert Morgan High School/Educational School on having the Guild give a demonstration on turning to the School. More info to follow. Ralph has gotten feedback from members on what should be sold at our events. We need to get back to Selling at our events, only Turned Items on a Lathe, based on the ( Info to Vendors ) Guidelines were sent out to all members before before each event. Bob Hazel recently talked to David Freundlich and set his regards to the members. Don Van de Hei is having trouble getting members to volunteer for Monthly Demonstrations. Don started this years demo on Hollowing, because he could not get someone from the club. David Golzbein volunteered to demo this year. Need more volunteers. Ralph thanked Dave Piper for the work that he does on the Website, Roster, meeting minutes, newsletter draft and distribution list current and accurate. David Freundlich mentioned working with the Parks Service for a Donation of Time program. More to follow. Don mentioned that their are some other events at the Fruit and Spice Park that could be attended by the Guild. o Redland International Orchid Festival in May. Will Riley will look into the logistics. o Redland Grow Fest in October. Dave Piper will look into the logistics. He was approached at the Heritage festival for participation. OLD BUSINESS: We are looking for a volunteer to take over the Librarian duties for the Guilds DVDs. If we cannot find a member to take of the duties of Jack Sawyer they Page - 1

3 will be raffled off at the Bring Back. Jack now videos and edits our demos and uploads them to our website. We need members to volunteer for Demos for The member who gives a demo will receive a $10 Craft Supply Gift Certificate. The information is also on Facebook. Dues are $30.00 for individual members and $40.00 for family, which include a family member that is a Turner. Family members of Turners are included in all Guild functions. Wood alerts are ed out. The last Wood Alert was for wood that has the fruit that is used for JuJube Candy ( If you are not receiving any Wood Alert s, let Ralph know. Ralph received a $10.00 gift certificate from Craft Supply. 50/50 Brian Seguin won $45.00, the Guild received $45.00 for its treasury. Please bring only $1.00 and $5.00 dollar bills for the 50/50 Tens and Twenty make it difficult to make change. WORKSHOP: The next workshop will be on January 19th, 2019 from 9am to Noon at Waldo s SW 187 Avenue, Miami. No children under 10. Children 10 or older who are interested in woodturning are welcome with a parent. Bring a N-95 dust mask to the workshop if you plan to turn. Also your tools and face shield. SAFETY: A dust mask should be used for any sanding on the lathe, sharpening tools, etc. A mask should also be used when grinding tools. Powdered metal is as bad for your lungs as sawdust is. When using CA glue do not glue yourself to something you cannot pick up. Know where acetone or fingernail polish remover is in case of accidentally gluing of yourself to something. The fumes are nasty, wear a mask. January Demonstration: Hollowing a small Vessel - by Don Van de Hei Demo: After you turn a vessel to the finished shape you then remove material on the inside. Referred to as Hollowing. The Demo vessel was approximately 3 to 4 diameter at the top and approx 7 to 8 tall. Don Van de Hei was given a $10 gift certificate from Craft Supply for his Demo. Page - 2 Drill a hole to the depth of the vessel or close to the bottom, leaving 1 to 2 for

4 sanding the bottom and removing the tenon. The hole can be made using a Forstner bit (1-1/4 diameter or 1/2 to 3/4 diameter drill bit). A Robert Sorby hollowing tool was used to open up the drilled hole to achieve the size of the opening required. There are many different sizes depend ending on the angle of the tool to the cutter angle ( probe-hollowing-tool-mssu asp?gf=1&gclid=eaiaiqob- ChMIopbxop3u3wIVWbjACh3Yw9iEAQYASABEgI96vD_BwE). Small hollowing tools are good for a depth of 3, going any deeper makes the cut too grabby. The smaller tool is mainly used for small items like Christmas ornaments. For larger vessels use a large boring bar because your biggest problem is usually vibration as you try to reach further than you should over your tool rest with your hollowing rig ( A Steady Rest ( R3.html) is used for longer vessels in order to stabilize the vessel from moving during hollowing. A few of the members have made their own. Don used a Laser Pointer to help him determine the Wall and Bottom thickness of the vessel he was turning ( ccessories_lasers.html). The laser pointer can be purchased at a Pet Store or local grocery store in the pet section. MENTORING: Feel free to ask around for help. Most members are willing to help others with information that can be given over the phone or even hands-on, should anyone need help.
