Submissions, notices, calendar tems, suggestions feedback and the like may be sent to the Editor, Eric emead@nycap.rr.com. Publication deadline is the 20th of every month prior to the monthly meeting. Regular meetings of the AWA are held at 6:30 PM on the first Wednesday of every month except January and July, in which the meetings are held on the second Wednesday, in the White Building at Curtis Lumber, 885 NY 67, Ballston Spa, NY. The main session will be by Matt Clarke. Thin Walled Vessels This month s demo is by Matt Clarke from the Kaatskill Woodturners. He will be showing us how to turn a thin walled (1/16th ) bowl and vase. He turns both green and dry wood and typically will use this method when piercing will be used to decorate the piece. See pictures on page 3 for examples of Matt s work. Turning a mushroom box is the topic. Cost is $15.00 and includes the wood. Bring your own spindle turning tools and a small round scraper. Sign up at meeting or contact Jack News from AAW As part of the Fall 2006 membership drive, the AAW will be giving away a free Powermatic 3520B lathe to one lucky member who joined/renewed ONLINE. You can see and learn about this lathe at &iid= By joining on line, your correct address, phone, etc. will appear in the Directory and your Journal will be mailed to the correct address. If you use the paper mail-in form, mistakes can happen in reading and retyping it. The lathe will be given away in a drawing just after January 1, To qualify for the drawing you must join or renew online using the AAW website join/renew feature. Members who join/renew by phone or by paper will NOT qualify for the drawing. Only members who join/renew online between August 15, 2006 and January 1, 2007 will qualify. The free lathe includes free shipping up to $400. If you just joined the AAW for the first time, the username and password were provided to you either electronically, or via postal mail with your order. After you login, you will be prompted to create a unique username and password combination. Note from the editor - I used this program and plan on winning the lathe in January. Request from a Member During Totally Turning 2006, one of our members attended Dick Sing s Egg and Ornament demo. The member would like to know if anyone was going to make his PVC jig. If so, would you be willing to make a second one for sale. AAW has also sent out information for Profession Turners about an insurance policy they have put together. AAW doesn t benefit from the sale of the insurance. They did however make sure that the Professional Turners got great coverage. 4 Woodturning School at Round Top Center I want to introduce you to the Woodturning School at Round Top Center for the Arts in Damariscotta, Maine where I am the Volunteer Director. We are a non-profit educational facility whose focus is on teaching men, women and teens how to turn wood. Our goal is to share the joy and satisfaction that woodturning offers. You may have seen the article about the school in the Summer 2006 issue of American Woodturner magazine. The school is in its third year. We ve proven that our teaching methods work and we have an enthusiastic alumni. We provide all the tools and wood. Most of our classes have been geared to midcoast residents, 3 hour/week for 4 weeks, however we ve also experienced enormous success with 2-day intensive courses on weekends. We are a small Woodturning School on the beautiful Maine coast. We have small classes (six, one student per lathe), proven instructors and a well thought out program. Our lathes are new Oneway s. We are selling nothing but education and fun. No tools, wood, sandpaper, adhesives. The mission of the Woodturning School is education and the fun of learning in turning. With the first of these being Kitchen Gifts for Christmas workshop on December of this year. We plan to announce this to all AAW members in the 7 New England States. Other workshops on the schedule include: Master Bowl Turning, January Hollow Turning, February Boxes, Embellishments, and Inlays, March Go Home with a Bowl and the Basics. Jimmy has become so popular because he talks to you, he teaches you, and he teaches you everything he can without leaving anything out.
