1 Chattahoochee Woodturners Newsletter Volume 21, Issue 11 November 2018 Message from the President Harold Wright, President 2018 This year s December Christmas Gathering will be on Tuesday, December 11,2018. We will start dinner at 6:30 PM so plan on coming around 6:00 PM. We want to get a head start on the fund raising raffle that we usually have each year. Enclosed are ten raffle tickets. We are asking each of you to do your best to sell all ten tickets to help fund our demonstrations and special training programs. This letter includes 10 tickets. The cost is $5 per ticket or $20 for five tickets. If you need more tickets, please contact one of the board members listed below. We encourage you personally, as a chapter member, to look at purchasing raffle tickets, not just for what you might win, but for the good you will do in supporting chapter programs and member training. We just don t take in enough money from dues and the monthly raffles to fully fund the quality of programs we need to attract and retain members, so we do this annual raffle to supplement this. Please consider buying at least five of the tickets for yourself. Remember: You do not have to be present at the meeting to win. If your ticket is drawn, your name and phone number should be on that ticket so you can win even if you are not there. Items won will be available for pickup at the January meeting, unless other arrangements are made with the Rafflemasters. Gainesville, GA It s hard to believe that it is almost holiday season again. We re looking forward to a time of fellowship and food with our Chattahoochee Woodturners friends again this year. Since this is intended to be a family time, we hope you will plan to bring your spouse or special friend. We plan to eat around 6:30 PM, have some time to visit, then move on to the ornament exchange followed by a great raffle and auction. If you can t come for the meal, but do want to be there for the ornament exchange, raffle and auction, please join us around 7:00 PM. Ornament Exchange: Bring an unwrapped turned wooden ornament or small turning to exchange with other members. You may also bring one for your spouse if you want to. Raffle: (Detailed raffle letter and tickets enclosed). We continue to add turned items, tools, gift certificates, etc. to our main fundraising raffle of the year. Additional tickets will be available that night. Remember to write your name & phone number on the back of each of your tickets. You don t have to be present to win. Auction: Our fund raising auction includes many excellent turnings from some of our chapter s finest turners as well as other special items. Cash, checks or credit cards are welcome. Directions Lakewood Baptist Church is located at 2235 Thompson Bridge Rd. (also known as Hwy. 60) about a mile south of Thompson Bridge over the lake. For a map and more detailed directions, go to the Lakewood website, and click on Plan a visit at the top of the page. Then click on the address for a map and directions. You may park in the right side parking lot. The Kids Cove area is accessible at the northwest corner of the parking lot (the open area between two large buildings) You will see a lighted Kids Cove sign at the entrance. Meal: (Advance reservation required by December 3rd) the meal will be catered by Longstreet Café. 4 DEMONSTRATOR: Ron Brown November Demonstration Biography: Ron is a professional wood turner, inventor, publisher, demonstrator, author, father, grandfather, great grandfather and husband to Sweet Janice for nearly 50 years. Best known for the Longworth Chucks Type 1 (2010) and Type 2 (2018), the Amazing Doughnut Chuck (2017), the Amazing Full Sized Off-Center Chuck Type 1 and 2. And for sharpening, the Quad Setting Jig, the Gouge Set Up Blocks, the Universal Setting Jig, and the Negative Rake Scraper Setting Blocks. The Turner s Laser Guide for hand held hollowing tools and deep hollowing systems is one of Ron s most popular inventions. A woodworker since age 19, Ron has built and sold over 1,000 pieces of custom furniture and commercial cabinet goods. Ron has toured with The Woodworking Shows since 2006 and has demonstrated various turning related jigs, fixtures and tools to over One Million visitors at these shows and various woodturning symposiums. Ron has produced over 25 full length How-To Project videos and has 80+ videos on YouTube. Ron has published a weekly newsletter for the past 5 years and now has a weekly subscriber base of about 8,000. His newsletter offers tips and tricks for turners and also has broad applications for everyday living. Ron runs a largely internet based business offering many of his own designed items many of which he manufactures himself mostly using a CNC and Epilog Laser Engraver. Ron also offers a wide variety of other items of interest to the wood turner with sales worldwide. We ve lost a few good men and gained some new turners along the way. Some of our more notable gents traveled and shared and won some honors. Let s all challenge ourselves to turn more, learn more in the coming year. I am currently an active member of the American Association of Woodturners I have not received any other CWT Training Scholarship in the past twelve months. And maybe even learn new and creative techniques in woodturning. No skill prerequisites required, come as you are. Our planned HOW session will be on turning Christmas ornaments again.
