2 President s Message from Dick Hammat We had a very good attendance for the March Wood Auction meeting again almost 50 persons present. We welcome three new members: Robert Cook, Larry Green, and Royce Parman, who joined during the meeting. Welcome! It is great to have you as members. John Jordan did an excellent job as the Auctioneer. We had a tremendous amount of wood to auction. His helpers Jake and Randy did a very good job moving the wood and storing it for the bidders. Mary McAnally again donated wood from her husband s collection with a lot of wood for the auction. We very much appreciate that. Gordon and Harry brought that wood in along with their own contributions for the auction. That was no small job. John Jordan brought a large amount of prepared cut pieces of wood also. Several people also brought wood, which was cut for ornaments, pen blanks, and bowl blanks. Rob Smith, Andy Milligan, Bruce Pharis, Bob Law, Bob Emery, and Lucy Bobb as well as others who did not sign the donation paper. Thanks to all who brought in Wood. The quality was very good, and it all went for great bargain prices. Vic Kaminsky, Scott Duncan, and Harry Ford were very helpful and did a good job documenting the auction bidders with the total dollars for each. We received $1,750, with another $40 to go. This was over $100 better than last year s auction. Remember to turn some ornaments for our Children s Hospital Fantasy of Trees program as well as Pens for the Troops, which will be due in the October period. Remember to bring show and tell for the April meeting. No matter what your level of turning, bring a piece that can be shown. Members will gladly answer any questions you might have concerning your projects. We are looking forward to the Spring Woodturning Weekend on April 27 & 28th. We will have sign-up sheets at the April meeting. Anyone interested can Gordon ahead of the meeting to assist with planning topics etc. Our quarterly Board Meeting is April 3rd at Woodcraft. Anyone is welcome to attend. Thanks and Keep Turning Wood!! 4 Lathe Safety Mike Anthony Lathes are great to work with. You can make many things but can be dangerous to the user, if not trained properly: Operators should carefully inspect all parts of the lathe for defects before beginning. Select stock carefully; avoid wood with knots or splits. Be sure to let glued-up pieces dry completely before turning. Make sure the wood is secure before starting and check often to be sure it stays secure. Turn wood by hand before turning on lathe, to be sure it clears the tool rest. Never adjust the wood while the lathe is turned on. Make sure your tools are always sharp. Make sure to keep both hands on your tool at all times and keep gauges out of head stock and chucks. Mentoring Policy final from SMWT President 1. Mentoring will be between SMWT Members in good standing only. 2. Mentoring will occur only in the member s shop. 3. Mentoring will be a one on one hands-on experience. 4. The mentor must be experienced in the topic to be covered. 5. The mentor must follow the AAW Safety Guidelines. 6 February March Issue no. 23 What s Happening at the Ranch this Month? In March, we introduced five new students and one of their mentors to the fun of woodturning. With these six new beginner students, we now have 16 total participants in our programs. That s an awesome accomplishment for the program, now in its fourth year! Students will continue to make items for the Ranch s Craft Sale coming up on May 4 th. If you would like to contribute a turned item to the Ranch for the sale, please do so no later than the April Meeting. Just give the items to Bob, Jake, Randy or Ed and we ll see that they are included. Remember, the proceeds from the items sold at the Sale go towards the Woodworking program at the Ranch. Thanks to Randy Fritchman and Ed Lewis who joined Thanks to Randy Fritchman and Ed Lewis, who joined Jake and me to mentor the students this month. If you d like to help with our workshop program, just contact Bob Law or Jake Niedling. Please bring a turned project to donate for the Sale to the April Meeting.
7 March 2019 JANUARY Woodburning Demonstration Issue No. 3 Gallery Band saw Workshop SMWTS Mentoring Session Saturday, March 2, 2019, was the day that Gordon Sloane, Vic Kaminski, Harry Ford, Andy Milligan, and Buddy Hewgley met at John K. Jordan s shop in Clinton, TN for six solid hours of basic bandsaw safety, maintenance, and instruction on how to cut green wood blanks for bowl turning and spindle turning. John spent the morning going over the components of the bandsaw and how to ensure that upper and lower wheels were aligned, the blade was tracking, and the tension was correct. He gave a quick safety review on operating the bandsaw and then went on to cutting both green and dry wood. John impressed on all of us the need to stabilize the wood on the saw table before ever turning the machine on. We spent a lot of time on how to hold the wood and the use of push sticks to safely move the wood through the blade. One of the highpoints of the session was the demonstration and necessity for getting the blade tension correct on the bandsaw. Most tension scales on bandsaws do a very poor job of telling you the correct tension needed for the blade size. It was certainly an eye opener for all of us and a great day spent in the shop. Thanks, John, for a great mentoring session Calendar of Events January 15 February 19 March 19 April 16 April May 21 June 18 July 16 July August 20 September 17 October 15 November 19 December 17 Brian Horais Tools for Embellishment Pauline Bayne From Turning to Burning for Decoration (Pyrography) Annual Wood Auction John K.
