John Lucas Our November Demo Artist Featured were iridescent paints from Starter airbrush tool from Harbor Freight and paints from Golden. Golden paints are available from Amazon.com, Dickblick art supplies and other purveyors. He also recommended MicroMark for hobby supplies and finishes. John covered so much more in his presentation. Just one of the reasons for attending our monthly meetings. COMING UP IN DECEMBER WOODTURNING AND AIRBRUSHING was the topic for November s Demo with John Lucas. Wow is all we can say when describing our guest artist s presentation. John covered the topic from A to Z and included a number of demonstrations on how to utilize airbrushing as an embellishment for turned projects. Complete with examples of the equipment you need to airbrush through techniques for producing various designs on turned projects. John is well known for his turned mirrors and he brought several examples of finished mirrors with airbrushed designs with him. While airbrush equipment can be expensive, John also displayed and explained the source for starter equipment that can be used with a shop compressor (with proper pressure adjustments). Our December Meeting will be our annual Christmas Party. Please bring a wrapped and unmarked gift worth no more than $20 for the Dirty Santa Gift Exchange plus an appetizer dish or dessert to share! Dirty Santa Rules are included in this Newsletter. SAFETY MESSAGE By Mike Anthony Woodturning can be a hazardous pastime so precautions should be taken to minimize any risk of injury. Equipment operator s guides should be consulted before using. *Are you fit? Perhaps one of the easiest to overlook questions you should ask yourself? Are you physically and mentally able to work safely. If

2 2 you are tired, under the influence of drugs or alcohol or preoccupied mentally, your judgement or reactions may be impaired and you may take risks you wouldn t normally take. *Lifting. If you have a large lathe, you wil no doubt be involved in lifting large, heavy pieces of wood. Suitable protective footwear is advisable. It would be worthwhile to familiarize yourself with safe PRESIDENT S MESSAGE lifting techniques (Kinetic lifting). Employing such techniques will reduce the chance of injury. If the piece of wood you are trying to move is too heavy for one person, get some help or use lifting equipment like a hoist. Wow; what a great presentation by John Lucas, of the Cumberland Chapter, on air-brushing. I bet that s more air-brushing information than you have ever heard in your entire life. Now you just need to take all that information and put an air-brush in your hand and turn all your wood turning projects into works-of-art. Thank you, John for a very interesting demonstration. It looks like the club continues to out-do itself every year with our pen-turnings and ornaments. I want to personally thank everyone who turned a pen or ornament for the projects this year. Jim and Randy did a tremendous job in getting those two projects off the ground this year and flying high. I want to welcome Scott Duncan to the Board of Directors, along with the others that got re-elected to another term. Without the Board and Committee Chairs the Club would cease to exist. We will be working with George and Everett, of Woodcraft, to see if we can organize the wood shop differently to accommodate our member s, guests, and visitors at our monthly meetings. I counted over 50 people at our November meeting and many of them were standing. We hope to make room for everyone who visits, with a nice seat and a view of our TV s. Christmas is right around the corner and that means our annual party (Dec. 18, 2018) will be taking place instead of a wood turning demonstration. We will still have the raffles, show-and-tell, along with our second Wood Challenge (basic bowls 3 categories), a Dirty Santa Gift Exchange, Silent Auction, and light refreshments. Information on what to bring will be sent out to everyone in a forth coming . I hope to see everyone at the party this year. 4 4 SYMPOSIUMS REGIONAL SYMPOSIUMS TN Assoc of Woodturners Franklin, TN 1/25 to 1/26, 2019 Tom s Video of the Month Link. Member Tom Knight has been researching the how-t0 videos available on You Tube and through the AAW Website. He thought our members would like to see some of them. This is one of the great benefits of AAW Membership and saves time searching through You Tube. Tom will select a different video each month in hopes that our Chapter members will take advantage of the videos that are available. This one is turning an inside out ornament (2 parts) Our Chapter turned and donated over 300 ornaments to this year s Fantasy of Trees for Children s Hospital. We estimate that $3,000 will have been raised through the sale of the ornaments at the event. EQUIPMENT FOR SALE Member Jared Bruckner has a Powermatic 3520B Lathe for sale. 5 5 Beads of Courage & Children s Hospital Our commitment to provide Treasure Boxes for the sick kids at East Tennessee Children s Hospital is ongoing. Unfortunately, the number of sick children who benefit from the BOC program doesn t diminish.. Our ETCH volunteer liaison, Drue Hogland, will continue to present our Treasure Boxes as they are needed to the kids at ETCH. Our Chapter provides BOC Beads to our members at no cost for this worthwhile project. You can pick up beads from Drue at any of our monthly meetings. You are urged, as well, to contact Drue for the opportunity to accompany him at the Hospital as he distributes Treasure Boxes to the kids in the BOC program! Thanks as well to Pat Brown, our WVR Mentor in Chief who was able to close in the interior windows and doors temporarily and provide a torpedo style construction heater to use while we are teaching.

Next step will be to finish insulating the walls. A mechanical room and restrooms are also on the horizon. One of the Ranch s donors provided funds to puirchase a SawStop cabinet saw for the shop.

Thanks as well to Pat Brown, our WVR Mentor in Chief who was able to close in the interior windows and doors temporarily and provide a torpedo style construction heater to use while we are teaching. In spite of the 40 degree weather, we were nice and warm inside. WVR is working on a permanent solution. Looks like a fixed heat and air system is being considered. It should be arriving sometime in December or early January. Thanks. Bob Law December s Challenge for Bowl Turning There will be three skill levels to be judged and three winning awards. The number of bowls the member has turned in the past twelve months will determine this. Each member will be trusted to determine his or her level. Beginner 1-3 bowls Intermediate 4-12 bowls Expert 13 + bowls Each bowl will be judged by the following criteria: Bowl design Balance of wood beauty and embellishment (embellishment will only be judged at the Expert Level Only) Lack of tool markings Uniform wall and bottom thickness Smooth transitions Bottom and foot design Rim design Sanding and finish

9 9 The Official Dirty Santa Rules 1. Everyone has to bring a well wrapped gift. A theme must be chosen, which could be re-gifts, funny gifts, gag gifts, food items, etc... The maximum price everyone will spend per gift, $20 for example. 2. Order of players has to be determined by drawing. Everyone must be assigned a number by picking out a number from the bowl that contains pieces of paper with numbers on them. 3. Game order must be maintained by keeping everyone in circle. Participants must stay in the original place that they were sitting as the game progresses, since it depends on the players seating sequence in the group. The sequence is usually clockwise. 4. Player that draws #1 chooses and opens first gift. First player that had drawn a piece of paper with #1 on it gets to pick and open the first gift. They must show it to others. 5. The next player can open a new gift or steal an opened one. The next player can decide to select an unopened gift or steal one opened gift from anyone that has it already opened. 6. The are limits for stealing gifts to keep in mind: A gift can only be stolen once per turn. You cannot steal the gift that was stolen from you right away and must select either an unopened present or steal from someone else. If any present gets stolen three times, it won t be allowed to be stolen again and whoever was holding it last will get to keep it.

10 10 7. When last person refuses to steal, game ends. After everyone has had a turn and all gifts are opened, the first player gets another chance to swap the gift he or she is holding for any other opened gift. Anyone who's gift is stolen may steal from someone else as long as that person hasn't been stolen from yet. When all gifts have been opened and someone declines to steal a gift, the game will end.
