Anybody can see Folsom State Prison from a distance, but it s a whole different feeling inside the walls. There is so much history in our town.

Speaking of bowls, we are in October now, which means Empty Bowls is fast approaching. Let s try and be at our total from last year. I think it was somewhere around 400 plus bowls.

Halloween is fast approaching. Are you already for those Trick-or-Treaters? You know, I will be one of them, right? We had a family tour at Folsom Prison earlier this month. I took Mr. Tony with me. Too bad they wouldn t let me lock him up. You know, I m just playing with you Mr. Tony. I m glad you were able to join me. I had a lot of fun. Anybody can see Folsom State Prison from a distance, but it s a whole different feeling inside the walls. There is so much history in our town. While we were sitting there waiting to go inside, I kept looking at all the trees. I was thinking, look at all the pretty bowls we could have. Speaking of bowls, we are in October now, which means Empty Bowls is fast approaching. Let s try and be at our total from last year. I think it was somewhere around 400 plus bowls. As I said at last month s meeting, if we all just turn three bowls we can crash last year s total. In the classroom this month, Mr. Neal DeVore, the King of Squares, will be your lead instructor. Neal will be teaching us how to turn square platters. Neal will be providing stock, which is all burl. As I stated in the last President s Message, this is not a beginner s class. That being said, you are all welcome. Please remember to watch the suggested YouTube videos as they are a great help. I am really looking forward to this class. This month s demonstrator at the General Meeting is none other than Mr. Mike Mahoney. Mike has been a professional woodturner since His bowls are featured in galleries across the United States. Mike will be turning an oak platter. If we re lucky, maybe we can get Mr. Shann to auction it off for us. Thank you Mike for being our demonstrator for the evening. Lastly, October is the month for our Fall semiannual Swap Meet! As you know, my wife and I will be serving chili and cornbread again. The tool swap is going to start at 5:00 PM in the parking lot of the school. I know we all have tools that we are no longer using. So let s gather them all up and make a little Christmas money. Or, in my case, buy more of Mr. Tony s tools to add to my collection. It s quite entertaining watching Tony come over and look in my toolbox to see where all his tools went. Another is that everyone is willing to share that knowledge. If you have a "specialty" or even just a turning project that has "turned out" well, please consider sharing that by demonstrating at one of our club meetings. It can be a ½ hour demo (and we'll combine it with someone else) or a one hour demo. For those who haven't demonstrated before, we have added a page to our website titled "How To for Demonstrators. It's under the Members Only section at the bottom. Please consider helping the club by sharing your knowledge. Just let Tony or Jimmy know and they will get you on the schedule.

The easiest way to register is via the link on our website at A pencil mark from top center of tailstock will produce a mark slightly larger than 17 8" (48mm), which is the largest tenon that will fit into the Tekna-Tool Nova midi chuck. Marking from the top flat corner of tailstock will produce a line just over 21 16" (52mm) for a larger tenon to go into most other chucks. If you cut the tenon a bit smaller, it will still fit into your chuck. This pencil trick works on my 3520 Powermatic also. Check to see if this will work on your lathe.
