Reminder - please fill out a Show N Tell Card for each item at our meetings to ensure proper credit is given to each presenter in the newsletter. For projector slide presentations of your Show-N-Tell item, please limit the number of slides to 5 and provide the newsletter editor with a copy of the slides to etwg1983@gmail.com. Message from the Editor Charlie Cutler This is my final issue of the newsletter and I will be passing on the responsibility to a new editor. I am assuming the position of treasurer of the Guild from Tom Daily. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the newsletter. It has been an honor serving as your editor for the last three years. Thank you Tom for your service as treasurer. 2 Message from Our President Stephen Shankles Hello All, I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season. It s a great time of the year, except for those of us with poorly heated shops. I ve been thinking on something for the past few weeks. Our guild recently had a private estate sale in the woodshop of former member David Lloyd. David passed away over a year ago, and his son Peter had finally worked up the resolve to deal with the workshop. Fortunately David had asked Dan Duncan to assist with this process and he wanted his tools to go to members of the guild who would continue to use them. I believe the sale was a success and Peter sold most of what was there for fair prices. As woodworkers, we all enjoy collecting tools and loads of special wood. I know I m guilty of having an overloaded and unorganized shop. After witnessing this recent sale, it s got me thinking about how to responsibly take care of my woodshop as well as my loved ones after I m gone. I know my wife would have a hard time selling or dealing with the shop where I ve spent a lot of my time and energy over the years. That s a burden I don t want to put on her or my children. I believe this is where this guild can help. You can find a fellow woodworker that you know and trust with the responsibility, like David trusted Dan. It s certainly not something to take lightly. A woodworker, and the guild, knows what these tools and lumber are worth, far more than what an estate sale will bring. By making an agreement with a fellow woodworker, you can rest easier knowing that someone will take on the responsibility when the time comes. Of course this is also made easier by keeping some type of inventory and eliminating unused items whenever possible. I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas. And I m looking forward to seeing everyone at the January meeting where we ll have local woodturner Kellen Catani telling us all about how he turns large natural bowls. Class size will be limited to about 25 students. The following preliminary information about the class may be subject to change. Bill Key at keyws1@gmail.com if you plan to take this course. Note that David has been teaching finishing with the nationally recognized finish/restorer expert Don Williams (formerly head furniture conservator for the Smithsonian). David has done a number of notable finishing projects for Al Hudson and other Guild members. Even if you are well practiced in finishing, this is an opportunity to expand your knowledge in this critical area of furniture construction. Class Description - Introduction to Finishing Learning the history of finishes and finishing techniques, solvent base, water base, shellac, and waxes... techniques, materials and tools needed to achieve an exceptional finish.. including a brief look at stains, dyes and glazes for accenting one s work. The class will be a combination of lecture and demonstration with some hands-on practice using brushes and padding. Biography of our new Guild Secretary Thomas Ehrnschwender Tom is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, where he received a BFA from the Art Academy of Cincinnati majoring in sculpture and printmaking.

He moved to Knoxville in 1987 and returned to school as a non-traditional student studying architecture and structural engineering and has practiced architecture for the past 24 years.

Tom learned woodworking and the machinist trade from his father who was a master machinist. He has always enjoyed woodworking and making things.

3 Biography of our new Guild Secretary Thomas Ehrnschwender Tom is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, where he received a BFA from the Art Academy of Cincinnati majoring in sculpture and printmaking. He worked as a machinist for 15 years making one-of-a-kind parts and building prototype equipment. He moved to Knoxville in 1987 and returned to school as a non-traditional student studying architecture and structural engineering and has practiced architecture for the past 24 years. While not working, Tom is busy being a husband to wife Kathy and dad to son, Derek, and daughter, Emily. He loves the outdoors, gardening and woodworking. Tom learned woodworking and the machinist trade from his father who was a master machinist. He has always enjoyed woodworking and making things. Recent projects include building a Ruobo-style workbench, a 12 foot long wooden paddle board and paddle, two Windsor chairs and numerous carved wooden spoons. Tom s shop is one half of a two-car garage which he considers workable and looks forward to retirement when more time in the shop making. General Meeting Presentation by James Hooper James presentation on furniture restoration was very interesting. He showed some of the work that he does to create parts to duplicate matching parts for restorations. Restoring antique furniture is an art in itself and requires extensive knowledge of how the original maker made the part. He stated that if you really want to understand how a piece was built take one apart. James is one of the original founding members of the Guild.
