2 President s Message from Dick Hammat 2019 should be a great year for SMWTS Smoky Mountain Woodturners, as we are off to a good start. We welcomed 3 new members, Jerry Kilgore, Chuck Kulka, and Andy Stephansen. We all owe a very big thank you to Bob Law for all of the background work he has provided for the club over the last several years. In addition to a lot of club advice and direction, he has produced the excellent monthly newsletter. Pauline Bayne will assume the newsletter duties, and she has already hit the ground running. Gordon Sloane has agreed to provide her with backup as needed. Thank you, Thank you, Pauline! Harry Ford and Brad Duckett have left the board, and I thank them for their work over the past years. Mike Anthony and Scott Duncan have joined. Sherry Anthony has volunteered to assist with Photography. What a great demo by Brian Horais on his explanation of the various tools and methods he uses to create and embellish his twisted turning items. He does an excellent job of twisting things around with his woodturning. Thanks to everyone who paid dues and purchased raffle tickets. The club will continue our monthly $50 door prize drawing for members. We will have two woodturning challenges again this year. We had several interesting Show and Tell items for the meeting. I again encourage all levels of work to be brought in for Show and Tell or Show and Ask! If you need help or advice see one of the members before or after the meeting for assistance. We encourage education, the exchange of information and ideas, as well as advice. If one of the members doesn t have an answer, we can direct you to someone who does. We are in the planning stage for a mentoring program to begin this year. Several people indicated they will attend the Tennessee Association of Woodturners in Franklin TN. Jan 25 and 26. Always a very good program. I encourage everyone to become a member of AAW American Association of Woodturners. For $60 per year, a vast amount of information, videos, back magazine issues, and archived information on most any subject or aspect of Woodturning is freely available. We welcome suggestions anytime. Please share ideas or concerns with any of our board members. Thanks and keep the wood turning!! ---Dick 2019 Officers President Dick Hammat Vice President Mike Anthony Secretary Scott Duncan Treasurer Vic Kaminsky Board Members: 2019 Randy Fritchman Lucy Bobb Robert Brown John Jordan Gordon Sloane Committee Chairs Newsletter Editors Pauline Bayne & Gordon Sloane Photography Vic Kaminski, Robert Brown, & Sherry Anthony Video Jim Vogel sang and Andy Milligan Special Projects Fantasy of Trees Jim Vogelsang Beads of Courage Drue Hogland Pens for Troops Randy Fritchman Education WVR Project Bob Law Arts in the Airport Robert Brown 2

Two messages of appreciation have been received, both from Japan. My name is Sydney Slusser and I am a volunteer nurse at the clinic in Iwakuni, Japan stationed at MCAS Iwakuni. I just wanted to reach out to thank you and your members of Woodcraft for the handmade pens you have sent for Turn for Troops. As a Red Cross volunteer, I appreciate all the time and effort you all have put into making something so special and individually unique for my active duty coworkers. While many service members do not frequently see their families while stationed here, it means so much to them to be thought of and supported from thousands of miles away. Thank you again for your support, Thank you again for your support, Sydney Slusser BSN, RN, American Red Cross, Iwakuni, Japan From: Shauna Ralston Sent: Monday, January 14, :51 PM To: WC Customer Service Subject: Thank you! I previously served in the Marine Corps for 12 years and am currently a nurse in the Navy...19 years of service so far! It is an honor to serve our country and receive support from people and organizations like you! Your craftsmanship is unique and beautiful! Thank you for thinking of the troops. 4 Beads of Courage Boxes Drue Hogland Drue asked members whether they would object to giving some boxes made by club members to the children s hospital in Chattanooga. He is going to visit there to describe the program to them. He will report at an upcoming meeting. Safety Tips from Safety Officer, Mike Anthony Lifting: If you have a large lathe, you will be involved in lifting large and heavy pieces of wood. Make sure to wear suitable footwear. Make sure to familiarize yourself with safe lifting techniques or kinetic lifting. This will reduce the chance of any injury. If a piece of wood you are trying to move is too heavy for one person, make sure to get help or use special equipment. Chemical adhesives and finishes: Keep chemicals in a steel cabinet and be sure there is enough ventilation. Read all safety data before use and take precautions when required. Do not leave polishing cloths laying around after use. Some finishes can spontaneously catch fire. This is also true for steel wool. Put them in a sealed metal container or bucket. Bruce Pharis sent an article on personal safety suggestions by Craft Supplies USA published in this month s edition of Woodturning Online. Please see this in-depth information in the safety section of our website: Fantasy of Trees Jim Vogelsang Jim thanked everyone who contributed ornaments last year. All were sold individually to the benefit of Knoxville Children s Hospital. He encouraged all of us to start turning ornaments early this year to match our output of about 340 ornaments in Arts in the Airport Robert Brown reported that he is awaiting news of the application process for January Demo Brian Horais provided us with lots of good information about the various tools he uses for embellishing his twisted turnings. He covered tools for hand carving (microplanes, carving knives, files, rasps & sandpaper), for power carving (reciprocating & rotary carvers), plus his handmade woodburner with nichrome wires in various shapes. We also enjoyed the tiny fire displays. Thanks! American Association of Woodturners If you are not a member of AAW, we d ask you to consider joining our parent organization. A new member-ship promotion for first-time AAW members will begin in Individuals may sign up for a free 6 month introductory AAW membership that includes 3 mailed issues of American Woodturner journal, plus access to all AAW information on line. 5 What s Happening at the Ranch this Month? Randy Fritchman joined Jake and I for the first of the January Workshops at the Ranch. The students were challenged to utilize a number of the skills they ve learned to turn a small flower vase with a glass vial insert. As part of this exercise they learned to turn and use a jamb chuck. We re looking forward to the improvements in the shop that our Volunteers will make on our 2019 Day of Service at the Ranch. Our construction heater puts out plenty of heat but the Studio doesn t hold the temperature for long. The students are looking forward to the Insulation and wallboard! Our next project will be the assembly of the new Saw Stop system, hopefully before the end of the month. We ve got one more set of Workshops in January where the remainder of our students will complete the same project. Ed Lewis is going to join us for those. If you d like to help with our workshop program, just contact Bob Law or Jake Niedling. Coming Attraction: J. 6 January 2019 Issue no. 1 Issue #: [Date] Dolor Sit Amet SMWTS Day of Service 2019 WOW!!!!! What an awesome turnout and an incredible list of accomplishments from our volunteers for this year s Day of Service at Wears Valley Ranch! It was Saturday, January 19 th and the weather forecast called for rain all day. We were fortunate that the weather cooperated for at least the first half of the day. We started by removing all of the tools, tables and items from the walls and surrounding areas in the Shop Studio. Then we cleaned the floor and walls in preparation for the next steps. Our Volunteers split into groups to accomplish nearly everything on our list. The upgrades and tasks completed in the Shop Studio included insulating the remaining walls and installing the remaining mdf wallboard. This will help keep the shop warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Other teams sharpened all of the lathe tools while another group built a freestanding tool caddy for one of the mini-lathes. Others sorted, cleaned and re-labeled our supply and parts storage boxes. We were even able to install the Dust Collector pipe along the outside walls! At the end of our day, everyone pitched in to return all of the equipment, tables and items on the walls to their proper place. As planned, we now have room to install the new SawStop saw system over the next couple of weeks. Our thanks to the Ranch s chef, Klara Burger for a great Chili and Cornbread lunch and to Pat Brown our go-to staff member for providing the compressor, nail gun/stapler and all the materials in preparation for the days work. Members joining me for this year s DOS were Bob Emery, Don Dickinson, Jack Harris, Randy Fritchman, Brad Duckett, Bruce Pharis, Jake Niedling, Lucy Bobb, Ed Lewis, Dick Hammat, Brian Horais, Harry Ford, Don Nowack, Sandy Pittard and Jeff Thurston. Also joining the group was Blair Thurston, Jeff s daughter who participated as part of her community service commitment as the 2018 Junior Fairest of the Fair (Anderson County) Queen.
