1 CENTRAL OHIO WOODTURNERS MANY GOOD TURNS CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF WOODTURNERS Tis the Season... for turning keepsake Christmas ornaments Veteran C.O.W. turners treated club members to five outstanding demonstrations at the November meeting. Walt Betley and Bruce Kerns teamed to demonstrate the secrets of making sea urchin ornaments. Jim Burrowes turned a multi-axis Christmas tree. Dan Dapra demonstrated and assembled ornaments with connected discs. Dennis DeVendra made an icicle ornament with a Hershey s Kiss shaped top. Chuck Kemp turned and decorated a snowman pen that doubles as an ornament. Many thanks to these gentlemen for showing us how to make their beautiful creations! Next Meeting December p.m. OSU Ag/Eng Bldg 590 Woody Hayes Drive Columbus, OH Demonstrator: Doug Thompson of Thompson Lathe Tools will discuss tool making and sharpening. You will have the opportunity to purchase his tools after the meeting. PAGE 1
2 A FEW WORDS FROM YOUR PRESIDENT Paul Courtright First, I would like to wish everyone a healthy, safe and Merry Christmas. If you have been to the last few monthly meetings you know that we have changed a few things, from the meeting room to some of the topics we cover. As we embark on the end of the year and focus on the holidays, we would like to encourage everyone to stop and look around and see what we have. The club would not be what it is today if it was not for the members. So I would like to personally thank everyone for their efforts and contributions over the last few months and years. As we bring 2012 to a close with the last meeting of the year and open the door to a new year, let s not forget from where we came. Please open your hearts and share your talents and skills with family and friends. We have heard it before The best is yet to come let s make it happen. Bring a friend and share your club; teach a new person the talents we have. In keeping with trying to make our club the best it can be, we will be looking for your input on what you would like to see in upcoming meetings, on our website and any other club activities that interest you. We are working on a survey to gather this information. If you have comments or suggestion please let me, or one of your other officers, know. Our next meeting will add to your Christmas wish list, with Thompson tools. Doug Thompson will discuss tool making and sharpening. I would like to remind everyone to wear a name tag during the meeting. Also, if you entered the President s challenge, please remember to bring back your turnings from that small piece of wood given to you last month. It will be interesting to see how many toothpicks we get. Even if you did not make a toothpick, bring your piece back, so that you can get your next block of wood. Remember there will be a prize at the end of the year for the best of show and most creative. If you have questions about the rules of the President s Challenge please see me. I encourage everyone to join in on the fun. It has been fun and challenging. I enjoy seeing what you do with the various pieces of wood you get. Just remember that, at the end of the year we will auction off all of the turnings. So save your money to buy your favorite piece. So far, I have several favorites. We are still looking for a Safety Coordinator. If you are interested in sharing safety information with fellow club members, please contact me. Safety is something that I feel has slipped and we would like to bring it back to everyone s attention. On behalf of the Central Ohio Woodturners, I extend a warm welcome to all our new members, Gregory Ledet, Jasmine Usher-Ledet, Geoffrey Watson and Michael Wodarcyk. Please extend a hand and make them feel at home in our club. I look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting on December 11th at 7:00 pm. Bring a friend to share the fun! New members and visitors are always welcome. MEETING PARKING When attending the monthly meeting, don t forget to pay for parking before the meeting. The two kiosks in the parking lot accept only quarters or credit/debit cards. Don t forget to display the metered receipt on your dashboard. PAGE 2
3 MENTORING NEWS As we get closer to putting the final touches of the Christmas tree, what better way to finish decorating but making a few hand crafted/ turned ornaments. Come join us at the December mentoring session where we will spend the day making some cool Christmas ornaments December s mentoring session will again be held at Woodcraft store 1077 Bethel Road on Saturday, December 15 th, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm where we will be working on Christmas ornaments for those last minute gifts for our loved ones and to finish decorating the house and tree. Come see some new and simple ideas for turning ornaments. Please note, there is still room to volunteer as an Elf and help mentor in December, so dust off that Elf suit and come volunteer. November s mentoring session, in partnership with Woodcraft, was dedicated the brave men and women of the military. The Pens for Troops event was a great success with the help of eight club members and the staff at Woodcraft. All the pens turned will be sent to service members to show that they are not forgotten during the holidays. Special thanks go out to all for their help and support. As always, we welcome new ideas on topics or projects for upcoming mentoring sessions. Please forward any comments or suggestions, to Paul Courtright at or by at courtright.23@osu.edu. Be safe; no one wants an Elf with nine fingers. Paul Courtright STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Nelson Meyer, Secretary Met November 27 at Woodcraft Treasurer Mike Trucco report net income of $ to date in November; balance on hand of $ Congrats to Neil Hever! This is the area directly behind and in front of the workpiece; the areas most likely for a piece to travel as it comes off the lathe. A good safety habit is step out of this zone when turning on the lathe, keeping your hand on the switch in case you need to turn the machine off. When observing someone else turn, stay out of this zone. PAGE 3 Source: AAW
4 TAKING ON THE TURNING CHALLENGE - THE ACCESSIBLE LATHE PROGRAM Dennis DeVendra Intro and Overview In the fall of 2011, I received a note from the program director of the AAW, Linda Ferber asking if I would participate in a program to promote turning for people who are visually impaired. At first I was a little shocked. Although I have written articles for the AAW journal about my own experiences as well as two other turners, one who is blind and the other turns in a wheelchair. Woodturning for people with disabilities has been viewed by many as something too dangerous and not to be attempted. I was happy to share my experiences in an effort to breakdown these myths and promote turning for those like myself and many others who are turners with a visual impairment. With the efforts from Linda, the AAW was one of eleven arts organizations in the Twin Cities recently awarded grants for projects to make the arts more accessible to people with disabilities. Purpose and Goals The American Association of Woodturners received $15,000 to create curriculum materials and guidelines for instructors to use in assisting blind and low vision community members to discover the craft of woodturning. Under the leadership of Linda Ferber the project will also develop resources and techniques to enable current woodturners experiencing vision loss to remain involved with their woodturning activities. The project includes research, consultation, instructor training, and a pilot class to test and refine the curriculum. When completed in early 2013 the curriculum materials will be available digitally to all of the AAW members and local chapters no cost. One thing the program is not intended to be is an instructional guide for turning. It is assumed that the fellow instructors and mentors will already know how to turn or have the materials to learn. The focus is to provide a bridge between what a sighted woodturner would do and the adaptations that would be used to empower a person who is blind to successfully turn. Traveling to St. Paul So far I have traveled to the AAW headquarters in St. Paul twice. The first visit in June was to work with Jim Sanarud, a local woodturner. Jim and I worked on how we would adapt his woodturning class for blind students. The second visit in October was intended to capture video and pictures. These images will be used in the manual I am writing as well as a series of promotional videos. The third visit is scheduled for January to use the materials and techniques to validate their effectiveness. I am excited about the program and the opportunity of enhancing the possibilities for people who are blind. As more woodturners realize that people with disabilities can participate in woodturning, the better it will be for everyone. SAFETY FIRST! Fine particles from a grinder and wood dust are harmful to your respiratory system. Use a dust mask, air filtration helmet, proper ventilation, dust collection system, or combination of these to deal with this serious issue. Be especially mindful of dust from many exotic woods, spalted woods, or any wood from which you notice a skin or respiratory reaction. Source: AAW PAGE 4
