CENTRAL OHIO WOODTURNERS MANY GOOD TURNS CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF WOODTURNERS SEGMENTING MADE EASY Mark Waninger was guest demonstrator at the March meeting. Mark, a professional woodworker who specialized in custom millwork, began woodturning when he turned 50 and decided to pursue his artistic aspirations. He focused on segmenting, which allowed him to use boards left over from his millwork and developed techniques that do not require complex mathematical calculations or the use of any computer programs. Mark doesn t make turnings with intricate geometric patterns or multiple species of wood. Instead, he uses only a few species and rarely uses more than 16 segments per ring. Despite his relative simple process, Mark makes beautiful, award winning turnings. Mark demonstrated his process, first noting the need for stock preparation (flat boards and low moisture, <6%), proper set-up of the miter saw, and precise measurements. He sets up the miter saw fence so the blade will finish on an up-cat. He also makes sure the blade gets up to full-speed before cutting the board and lets the blade fully stop before raising it. All this ensures a smooth edge on the segment; making a good glue joint. Mark developed charts to determine the exact segment measurements based on the desired number of segments in a ring. He uses these measurements to set a stop block on the miter saw to ensure repeatable cuts. He, of course, double-checks the measurements by cutting a quarter of the segments in a ring, placing them together to see if they exactly measure 90 degrees. If necessary, he makes adjustments to the stop block. As Mark cuts the segments, he numbers them in order. He then glues them in pairs, then glues the pair together, creating half-rings. He matches the half-rings together and sands the ends on a board with sandpaper. When the ends are flat, he glues the rings sandpaper. When the ends are flat, he glues the rings together. Once all the rings are assembled and the glue is dry, he sands them to make sure the top and bottom of the rings are flat. He then glues and clamps the rings together, staggering the corners of the segments. When dry, he turns the piece. A simple process that requires attention to detail, but one even an inexperienced turner can do. Many thanks to Mark for his wonderful demonstration. NEXT MEETING Tuesday, April 8, 7:00 p.m. PAGE 1

A FEW WORDS FROM THE PREZ Paul N. Courtright Spring is here the sun is out and it is starting to warm up this all means winter is in the rearview mirror and it is getting close to the end of the year for our club meetings. The April 8 meeting will be the Iron Turner Competition. Come see Max K. defend his title as the 2013 Iron Turner champion. My President s Challenge for the April meeting will be to bring back the unfinished piece you picked up at the February meeting. In order to qualify for the mystery box, you only have to wear your nametag. I was told that there are some new DVDs in the library, so come check them out at the April meeting, but bring them and any others you may have borrowed by the last meeting. Our last meeting, on May 13, will be full of all sorts of events, such as the Potluck, swap meet, the auction, and the election of officers. If you are interested in running for an office, please let the election committee (Jim Baumgardner and Bob Pfister) know as soon as possible. The end of year Auction will be all of the items from this year s President s challenge and items from our guest turners. So save those dollars for the auction and don t forget to bring your favorite potluck dish to share with your fellow woodturners. On March 31 will be the start of another session of youth turning for the Deaf School (3/31, 4/7, & 4/15). Please contact Bruce Kerns ASAP, as he needs mentors. As a past mentor, it is a lot of fun and a rewarding experience to work with the young kids. I encourage you to mentor. As we look ahead to summer, we are in the planning stages of the summer activities. So watch your and newsletters for more information on these activities. Finally, it is time to make plans to attend the AAW Symposium in Phoenix. Don t forget to sign up as a volunteer to help the demonstration. You will love it. It is an unbelievable experience. Lastly, I would like to remind folks who picked up any of the walnut wood from my open shop last summer to bring me a bowl, or whatever you made out of the wood, to be given back to Mary Beth (who gave us the wood). That was the deal when you took the wood. Moreover, if we don t show our appreciation to people that give us free wood; we may not be given any more wood. So keep the chips flying and bring in something for show and tell. See you at the next meeting. IRON TURNER COMPETITION Dennis DeVendra Welcome to COW s 2nd Annual Iron Turner competition! Four club members have signed up this year for the fun and excitement. The turners this year are: Henry Fisher, Steve Wagner, Naeem Khan, and our defending 2013 Iron Turner champ, Max Kackstetter. Thanks to these turners for stepping up to participate in our COW event. Each iron competitor will be given 45 minutes to turn a creative object out of a piece of wood. The piece of wood is a 2 ½ inch square by 6 inch piece of cherry spindle stock. After the 45 minutes, each turner will be given a chance to describe what they have turned. After that the voting will begin. The voting will be on creativity. We will vote by applause. The winner receives a $20 gift card from the local woodworking store and the title of 2014 Iron turner. Second place is $10, 3rd and 4th place gets a $5 gift card. All will be guaranteed to have a great time. Good luck to the competitors and see you at the April club meeting! PAGE 2

SAFE TURNING Marty Gottesman, MD No woodturning shop is complete without a band saw. It is an integral part of your pre-lathe preparation, yet it is potentially the most dangerous tool in the shop. A tiny bit of distraction or inattention can lead to the loss of a finger in the blink of an eye. There is no guard on a band saw so protection from injury is totally up to the operator. Here are a few safety tips. Don t work while under the influence If you would be considered DUI for operating a motor vehicle then you shouldn t drive power tools. This applies to fatigued woodworking also. Keep distractions to a minimum. I ve said this before and I ll probably repeat it every time because it s so important. Don t reach for anything near the blade until it has come to a full stop. The safest area to reach is behind the blade, but still be very alert. The work should not contact the blade until it is up to speed. It could grab on startup and cause injury or damage your project. Don t back out of a curving cut with the saw running. Stop the blade and then back up. Unless you are using a jig, all stock needs to have a flat bottom. If it tips or rolls, your hands could be at risk. Keep bystanders away from the right side of the saw. If the blade breaks it usually (but not always) will shoot out to that side. Keep feet flat on the floor with a good balanced stance. Proper breathing and eye protection is mandatory. The dust collectors on these tools are not great and they generate a lot of airborne debris. Certain woods and all acrylics are terrible for your lungs. Keep the blade at proper tension with guides and height adjusted appropriately. The upper guide should just clear the top of the work. Understand proper operation of your saw and check all settings before turning it on. Unplug the saw before changing the blade or adjusting the guide blocks. Always keep your hands and fingers out of the line of fire directly in front of the blade. Keep your body parts at least 3 from it. Use sleds and push sticks when fingers would be at risk. Mark Waninger s Turning Guest Demonstrator at March 2014 Meeting MENTORING NEWS Paul Courtright The March mentoring session was a sharp one. A special thanks goes out to Jim B. and the staff of Woodcraft. Jim did an outstanding job showing how to sharpen our tools with different sharpening systems. He also gave some simple tips to help in sharpening and reproducing the grind. The next meeting will be at Wood Werks on April 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The April topic will be Preventive Maintenance for your Lathe and Shop Safety. We are also putting together a bonus mentoring class for May that will be announced at the May meeting. If you have any ideas for next year s mentoring, please forward them to Paul Courtright at pcourtright65@gmail.com or call PAGE 3

COW YOUTH TURNING IN MANSFIELD OHIO Bruce Kerns The Central Ohio Woodturners conducted a youth turning session for students from the Tec School in Mansfield, Ohio on Friday, March 21 st and Saturday, March 22 nd. Leslie Nielsen, their teacher at the school, offered her students the opportunity and arranged the session. Leslie applied and receiving a grant from the AAW for the class, purchasing a lathe, accessories, tools, a grinder, and materials for the projects. Initially six students signed up for the session, but only five participated Friday for the first project, a honey dipper. Schedule conflicts prevented others from finishing the complete session on Saturday. Two students, John Ewing and Sam Shank, completed two projects on Saturday, the spin top and a pen, and received their certificates of completion. The mentors, Chuck Kemp, Bob Pfister, Mike Trucco and Walt Betley all did their usual exceptional jobs of instructing and Mike took care of organizing and transporting the equipment. With only two students and four mentors on Saturday, there was some intense instruction and the students showed exceptional skill for first-time beginners. Everyone had fun and learned and the students were very pleased with their creations. If you have never mentored another turner, young or old, you will find it a very rewarding experience. My thanks to Leslie for setting up the session at the school; the space in the woodshop was ideal. A special thanks to Jim Baumgardner who loaned us pen mandrels and Ron Damon who supplied the practice blanks for the instruction. Please volunteer to be a mentor. Contact Bruce Kerns at kernsturns@gmail.com PAGE 4

WANINGER WORKSHOP - STAINING/COLORING Mark Waninger, in addition to being the club s guest demonstrator for March, conducted workshops for COW members. He first conducted a three-hour class on staining and coloring. Mark showed how to use alcohol-based leather dyes and other dyes to color turnings, using a variety of application strategies and techniques. Mark uses Fiebings leather dyes (which can be purchased locally at the Tandy Leather Store on Morse Road), and TransTint dyes (which can be purchased at our woodworking stores). He prefers alcohol-based dyes because they to not raise the grain as much as water-based dyes. Members had the opportunity to experiment with applying the dyes to sample turnings using Mark s techniques. Thanks to Ron Damon and the WoodWerks staff for hosting this workshop. PAGE 5

WANINGER WORSHOPS - SEGMENTING Mark Waninger conducted a hands-on two-day workshop, expanding on the demonstration he gave at the March meeting. Mark covered everything from making the miter box jig to cut precise segments to assembling and attaching the rings to the base of the vessel or bowl. He demonstrated the process then gave the students the opportunity to put his easy-to-follow lessons into practice. The workshop focused on the process of layout, cutting and gluing the segments rather than on the final turning. Although students did not turn their works at the workshop, we hope to see them all at a Show & Tell. COW thanks Mark for sharing his segmenting methods and to Barb Crockett for hosting the workshop. Thanks to Nelson Meyer for the workshop photos. PAGE 6

MARCH MENTORING - SHARPENING Jim Baumgardner led March s mentoring session on sharpening at his Woodcraft store on Bethel Road. He mentored approximately 15 COW members the intricacies of sharpening lathe tools, using a variety of sharpening systems. Jim showed how to achieve a flat grind using a flat stone and a belt sander. He also demonstrated the Sorby ProEdge Sharpening System (a belt sander designed exclusively as a tool sharpener) to produce standard and fingernail grinds. He then showed how to produce a hollow grind on several wheeled systems including the Tormek grinder (a wet grind system) and two slow speed grinders using the Wolverine Grinding Jig with its various attachments. One grinder had the more traditional aluminum oxide wheels and the other, the club grinder, had 80 grit and 180 grit CBN wheels. Club members not only got some of their tools sharpened, but outstanding training on how to keep their tools sharp. COW thanks Jim for hosting and conducting this valuable mentoring session. It is much safer to turn with sharp tools. Master this skill! Thanks to Nelson Meyer for the workshop photos. PAGE 7
