August is a good time to prepare for November. As a note the CHKD Christmas Tree is getting some attention. Scott Paris had a ornament making session on 22 July 2010 at Woodcraft. The Symposium begins October 23, (8:00am -6:00 pm) and ends Sunday October 24, 2010 (8:00am -3:00 pm). It s Your Turn, 2 Everyone ready for the Virginia Symposium? Ray sent out an to everyone with info thanks to Al Kiebert. This event is located at Expoland in Fishersville, Virginia. I am seeking an individual that is willing to commit to publishing the newsletter until Dec I would also like to see this person gain the support of two others; a photographer and an assistant editor for a standing committee of three. There are a few members that take pics already and could volunteer support. There is not so much a writing demand for the editor as a need to publish the newsletter by a reasonable date. 3 Page 3 Tidewater Turner August 2010 Wood Turning Safety Safety it can never be re-enforced enough that when you are turning, there are some basic safety precautions that each one of should take to prevent injury. The below article is on the website: Wood Turning Safety and Safety Equipment By Chris Baylor, About.com Guide Although wood turning on a lathe is probably statistically safer than using other woodworking tools and machines, it has some very specific rules that should be followed. If adherence to these safety rules can be enforced from eh outset until they become habit, your wood turning will consistently be a safe and enjoyable experience. Safety Glasses As with all woodworking, safety glasses are the most important piece of safety equipment. There are numerous styles of safety glasses. Try out the many styles that your woodworking supplier offers, and find a pair that you ll be comfortable wearing. Be certain that the pair you choose incorporates impact resistant lenses and side screens to protect against debris created you your power tools. Face Shield A face shield is a good idea when wood turning, as chips tend to fly in any direction. A clear impact resistant full-face shield will keep these chips and debris out of your face, helping you to avoid distraction when turning. Proper Attire When wood turning, proper attire is of the utmost concern. It is advisable to wear long pants and a long sleeved shirt to keep flying chips and debris at bay. However, you should avoid wearing loose fitting clothing, to prevent the excess cloth from becoming entangles in the machine. Respirators When turning some woods, particularly fine imported woods such as mahogany or rosewood, it is advisable to wear a dust mask or even a respirator, as the fine dust generated by turning these woods can cause irritation to the lung and mucous membranes. Prolonged exposure to such dust may cause some long-term effects. Always use the tool rest When wood turning, never free-hand a tool into the turning stock. At the very minimum, this can cause tearout, which can ruin your hard-earned efforts and turn a fine wood turning into firewood immediately. Even worse, free-handing can cause a tool to be ripped out of your hands. A flying, sharp cutting tool is a recipe for disaster. Adjust your turning speed for the stock size As a general rule, the larger the piece of stock, the slower the speed that the lathe motor should spin. Turning a very thing piece of stock for a pen can be rotated much faster than an eight-inch piece of stock for turning a bowl. Remember to set the speed of the lathe before turning on the lathe motor. Failure to adhere to this rule can result in a rather large projectile. Read the Safety Precautions As with any power tool, always read and follow the safety instructions that come with the tool. Failure to follow the safety instructions can lead to severe injury, and even death.

5 Page 5 Tidewater Turner August 2010 Wood of the Month Ambrosia Maple Ambrosia maple comes from regular soft maple and Hard Maple trees that have been infested by the ambrosia beetle. The small beetle bores a network of tunnels and short galleries called cradles. A fungus is responsible for the blue, gray and brown streaks and decorative patch work that accompany each tunnel and adjacent wood. The streaks and patch work add a unique look to this hardwood without affecting its structural integrity. This wood is mostly found in the central part of Eastern United States. The tunnels made from the beetles are extremely small. The infestation of the ambrosia beetle is terminated during the kiln drying process and will not start again in dry wood as the beetle needs somewhat wet wood to survive. Ambrosia beetles also infest other species such as birch, Aspen and Beech.
