2 Page 2 Tidewater Turner December 2011 President s Notes The Christmas Pot Luck was Outstanding. Great food, friends, and socializing -something we all enjoyed. I m ready to do it again next year! This particular time of year is very special to all of us. It is a time for families to gather and everyone to remember the memorable events of the past and present. This is also a time to consider realistic resolutions (goals) that you can achieve. Make a difference in your own life, set one resolution and work it to death. You will be amazed how that change in your life affects so many lives around you. Officer Elections were held in November. Terry Richards will not be able to fulfill the office, so we are seeking a vice-president. Consider how much you have invested in this club with all that you have learned and participated in the club activities. Accept nomination for vice-president. I ll be on the sidelines, just coming to the meetings enjoying the club activities. I am happy simply to be a club member and enjoy visiting y all. Being club president has been quite an eye opening experience, an enjoyable one too. I have learned so much more about the good people that turn wood and are Tidewater Turners. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! Another good one is on the horizon. November Notes from our Den Mother and Secretary, Connie Shiera Dues are: $35 per year The November meeting was called to order by J Farrell, President. J welcomed all visitors and new members. The floor was opened for nominations for offices for Sam Warren is President, Terry Richards is Vice-President, Connie Shiera is Secretary and Dave Zurek is Treasurer. Special thanks to Ray Kallman, Jim Vogel, Matt Lewis, Cliff Guard, Clifton Chisum, Bob Deml and Sherman McLaughlin for all their work to make this such a big success. This program will focus on skill building for turners by providing information and resources on safety, basic turning techniques, and reference materials for equipment. The Woodturning Fundamentals web page is available to anyone with an interest in woodturning! AAW members will be able to subscribe at no cost to a bi-monthly e-newsletter that will feature howto projects, instructional videos, and tips to get you started! There will also be a Q&A section that will feature questions submitted by e-newsletter subscribers. The Woodturning Fundamentals Committee is made up of: Kurt Hertzog (Chair), Nick Cook, Joe Herrmann, Beth Ireland, Linda Ferber, Mark Knierim, Keith Tompkins, and Rob Wallace AAW December Challenge You may recall the piece (shown to the right) that I submitted for the mantle challenge at the X-mas party. I decided to submit it for the December AAW forum challenge as it met the criteria (a vessel no more than 6 x 6 ). I am very happy to say that it won 3rd place. If room is available, a picture of it along with the 1st and 2nd place entries will be published in the next issue of American Woodturner.
7 Page 7 Tidewater Turner December 2011 Tool, Tips, & Techniques With so many tool choices for turners on the market today, it can be tough to decide what is worth purchasing, and what is not. Understanding the differences between the materials that tools are made from will help you select tools that are appropriate for your needs, and save you the headaches of buying tools that will not perform as they should. Let's look at the different types of tool steel available on the market today: Carbon Steel Carbon steel tools were the industry standard for many years, but have been replaced almost entirely today by longer lasting high speed steel. Carbon steel tools are still available today, but usually only as lower quality, inexpensively produced sets. The smaller price tag associated with these tools can make them an attractive option for new turners, but are not a good choice. Carbon steel tools will lose their temper (i.e. will no longer hold a sharp edge) if they are sharpened too aggressively, causing the edge to turn blue. Carbon steel tools will, however, hold a sharper edge than other types of steel, but only for a short period of time. This said, carbon steel is recommended only for occasions in which an extremely sharp edge needs to be used to clean up a piece during the final few cuts. High Speed Steel There are a wide variety of high speed steels available in the market today. The most commonly found types are M2 and M4 HSS (high speed steel). There are also cryogenically treated types of high speed steel, which we will discuss further in one of the following sections. High speed steels offer at least two main benefits. Quality high speed steels will maintain a sharpened edge longer than carbon steel, and they also will not lose their temper (ability to hold a sharpened edge) if ground too aggressively and caused to blue. High speed steel tools are more expensive than carbon steel tools, but are an excellent choice for turners of all skill levels. Spending a little bit of extra money on high speed steel tools will greatly increase the time you spend turning, rather than the amount of time you spend sharpening. One extra note, though - beware of inexpensive tools that are stamped as being made of high speed steel. Although the tools may be high speed steel, they are likely made of a very low grade variety and may not perform as well as others. Carbide Carbide tools are the ultimate choice for those persons who don't wish to sharpen their tools regularly. As carbide is significantly more expensive to produce than carbon or high speed steel, you will see these tools sold with interchangeable cutters mounted on the end of the tool. These tips can be rotated to expose an unused portion of the cutter, or can be replaced when totally worn. Carbide will stay sharp for a much longer period of time than other tools, but will also not hold as sharp of an edge as other types of steel. If using carbide tools, you'll get the best results by using a fresh, unused portion of the tool to make your final few cuts. Switch back to a more heavily worn section of the tool for the majority of the turning process. Cryogenically Treated Steels Typically, high speed steel is the most readily available type of cryogenically treated steel. The cryogenic treatment process improves wear resistance in tools, often allowing for 2X - 3X the usage (when compared to similar steel which is untreated) before the tool must be resharpened. Cryogenically treated steel will come at a slight premium in
