A good time was had by all in attendance. There was plenty of food and drink. The awards went to: 1st. place Mike Dennis, 2nd place Al Kiebert and 3rd to Dwight Bullock. See pictures on page 3 Annual Christmas Party and Competition: The Christmas Party was held Sunday, Dec. 9th at Woodcraft. Thank You, Thank You and Thank You to all for bring such GREAT side dishes and desserts! The food was wonderful. We even had a Smoked Turkey by one of the newer members, Eric Howard. I think this was one of the largest turnouts we have had in a long time. Thank you Bill and Heather for having us again this year for the party and all year for the meetings. We are looking forward to another great year in The winners this year were: Ornaments: 1st-Bruce Hoover, 2nd-Don Brooks and 3rd Lisa Mosser Mantel: 1st Chuck Mosser, 2nd & 3rd Al Gustave. 2 Page 2 Tidewater Turner President s Notes Hello everyone, I hope everyone had a good time at the Holiday party. I wish I could have been there. Now that my term is up, I would like to welcome Al Kiebert to the office of president. I hope he will have all of the support you all have given me. Continue to come up with ideas for classes, demos, shows, etc. I will be bringing a sign up sheet for those of you who would like to participate in the discount program with Hartville Tool. See you at the next meeting, Debbie Debbie Glaze, Outgoing President Al Keibert, Incoming President First, I would like to thank everyone for electing me club president and for the opportunity to work with such a large and talented group of people. Second, a Big Thanks to Debbie Glaze for doing a fine job these past three years. Third, I wish to say Thank You to all who participated in the Members Show at Riverside Gallery. There is a lot of creative work on exhibit from many of our talented members. The New Year is sure to bring a lot of new turning challenges to the club: the AAW Symposium, Virginia Symposium, Turn a thon s, metal spinning and new exciting demonstrations are on the horizon. We look to have a very busy year. The member s classes are being set up and it looks like we will expand the classes to get all interested members thru the classes. Here are some projects that I would like to suggest setting up this year: #1; more club members join the AAW and attend the Symposium in Richmond June #2; more members participate on club committees. Volunteer to Demo, help setup/take down, and demo at shows. We need volunteers for the listed items below. If you can help with one or more items that would be great! The more members that participate the better we make our club! Host s for guest demonstrators. This will help keep costs down with the more expensive demonstrators. Members to host shop visits. Members to write articles for the newsletter. Featured Turner for newsletter Members willing to travel to other clubs in a Demonstrator Trade Program. Start an annual Food Bank Collection 2 or 3 club photographers to work with Webmaster and Newsletter Editor. member buddy with a non member for quick updates. Remembrance committee to receive reports of illness & family deaths. These are a few suggestions to make the club run smoother and not depend on the few that have made things work so far. To those people, especially Connie, I say Thanks for being there! See you all next year, AlKiebert

4 Page 4 Tidewater Turner contributed by Al Kiebert You might be a Woodturner if you see a downed tree and you immediately wonder how many bowls it would make.... you run over a scrap of wood on the highway and you wonder how it would have turned.... you close your eyes and you see maple shavings curling off a sharp bowl gouge.... you visit a junkyard and you start wondering how all those parts could fit together into a bowl lathe.... you take a break in your favourite chair and you start wondering what you should turn next.... your friends love the smell of fresh coffee, and you love the smell of fresh wood shavings.... you see a nice shape on the beach, and you wonder what it would look like in wood.... you ask your wife to drive on a trip so you can check out all the trees.... you hear down with crack and reach for the end grain sealer.... your wife wears a new alluring perfume and you say rosewood, rosewood, someone is turning rosewood.... you carry a buck saw in the trunk of each of your vehicles, just in case.... you know and can give the best sources of wood.... you d rather stand in front of the lathe watching ribbons of shavings than go shopping.... people pick woodchips off your shoulders or out of your hair as you are talking to them.... there is a trail of shavings from the shop door to the house steps and a circle of shavings around the throne.... it s the late afternoon of January 26th and you head out to the shop to rough out a few bowls and such and have no qualms about missing a football game... you check the tissue after blowing your nose to admire the different colors. Mentoring Program Interested in i m p r o v i n g your woodturning skills or maybe learn a new technique? How about leaning to use a new tool. Ray Kallman For February Hout Returns... sorta Dave Hout For those of us who enjoyed Dave Hout presentation at our November meeting a piece of his work will return for the February meeting. Dave Hout spun a 6 pewter bowl that he gave to the club and we ll be auctioning it off during the February meeting. Pictures of the bowl are below.

5 Volume 8, Issue 12 Page 5 For March Hout Returns... for real! We ve had so much interest in the metal spinning class that Al contacted Dave Hout and has more details on the class. If you re interested and haven t signed up, please contact Al at akiebert@exoticwo odcreations.com to let him know. If the class has filled, he will add your name to the alternates list and if enough sign up, we may even be able to hold a second class. The details: Due to your interest the Tidewater Turners has been able to set up a Metal Spinning workshop, with Dave Hout. The dates will be March 21st and 22nd, (Friday/Sat). These dates are just before Easter Sunday, 23 March. Dave will be traveling to Florida and is willing stop by for the class. This means that we only pay travel expenses one way not two. (less cost to you). Class description: This class will cover the making of wood forms over which we will learn to spin metal. We will also discuss the tool-making process and complete tools for spinning as well as discuss the process for making chucks for closed vessels. The annealing non-ferrous metal will be touched on as well. Materials needed: Dave Hout will supply the metal and spinning lube. Class length: Classes will last 12 hours over two days at Woodcraft Other Details: The lathes will be 16 inch Jets The club will be providing the necessary tool rest s and material to make your spinning tool. You will need: Wood chucks and live centers to hold your wood forms/ disc s. Wood screw if available Basic turning tools to shape your wood forms Wood: dry, 2 thick hard wood for forms and follow blocks. 2 1/2 foot - 3 foot wooden handle from an old broom or shovel Here is a link to an online description with pictures of the class being offered. 6 Page 6 Tidewater Turner Walking Cane Shafts for Vets As mentioned in the November Newsletter the Wood Carvers Club has asked for volunteers to make Cane shafts for Disabled Vets here in Virginia. This is the pattern for the Cane Collaboration with the Wood Carvers Club. They are working on the Eagle heads and members of the Turners are invited to make the shafts, no limit on how many you can provide. The drawing below shows the dimensions needed to accomplish. The shafts can be out of any sturdy wood you have available. Perhaps something locally grown would be nice. This looks to be an on going effort with no end date. The club will be collecting shafts at the monthly club meetings.
