The program featured John Tarpley who did a great job of balancing the application of a rather technical process to woodturning with easy to understand instructions and examples of how to use stabilized wood. John started by explaining how he learned about resins and used them Coming Up In June Our June Meeting Demo will be presented by Drue Hogland Entitled, Drying and Turning Green Wood in your Shop, this demo is one of those requested by our members in our 2016 Survey. There are many advantages to turning green wood. It s easier, less dust is created, its cooler on your tools (which meaning less sharpening) and provides more enjoyment in the process. We ll explore many of the facets of handling green wood, both during his career. He then helped us understand how he applied his knowledge to the field of woodworking. John effectively demonstrated how the equipment used in the process works and reviewed the various options in equipment and resin products. He provided a hand out that is available to our members on-line (the Resources Page of our website). before and after turning. Specialty equipment supply sources and resin product (Cactus Juice) recommendations are available in that handout. Thanks, John for an outstanding Demo! NEW ON THE RESOURCE PAGE. Jake Niedling prepared a step by step hand out for a recent Workshop at Wears Valley Ranch. We thought our members might be interested in How to Make A Chinese Hat Box. 2 SMWTS Monthly Newsletter Page 2 of 10 New SMWTS Brochures and Sign The Smoky Mountain Woodturners Brochure has been updated. Woodcraft Knoxville and Jeffries Woods have been gracious in allowing us to place them in a counter display holder. We believe that making these informative brochures available to their customers has contributed to our membership growth over the past couple of years. At the May meeting, our new retractable sign was introduced to the membership. This sign was purchased so that we can identify our organization at meetings and at other special events and activities.. Please keep on turning BOC Treasure Boxes. Even though we ve met the 2017 challenge, we never have enough to meet the needs of the kids at ETCH.. May Boxes from Tellico Woodworkers The Beads of Courage Update Our friends in Tellico, through their woodworking club, continue to help us support this program to benefit the kids at East Tennessee Children s Hospital. At the May meeting, they contributed an additional dozen boxes to the Beads of Courage program. Our Chapter provides BOC Beads to our members at no cost for this worthwhile project. You can pick up beads from Drue at any of our monthly meetings. You are urged as well to contact Drue for the opportunity to accompany him at the Hospital as he distributes Treasure Boxes to the kids in the BOC program! For information on the guidelines for turning BOC Treasure Boxes please click on this link May Scholarship Draw Winners org/pages/woodturners.html Each month we have a draw to choose a monthly winner for our annual scholarships. 5 Page 5 of 10 SMWTS Monthly Newsletter Page 5 of 10 President s Message Our May meeting was a huge success from the feedback I received from members who were there. Everyone enjoyed the shortened news announcements and being able to get out of the meeting before the sun went down. John Tarpley s demonstration on resin stabilization of wood was interesting and knowledgeable. I m not sure if I will try it, but it sure has me thinking. Thanks John, for a great demonstration. I heard nothing but good things about our new club sign and brochure. We should have the sign at all club sponsored events and a stack of brochures. One of the reasons for the quick pace of the meeting is to have more time for showand-tell. In the past I have asked you to limit your sharing to one item (like Jake did with his box of ornaments and John Jordan did with his box of handles), but now with more time I think we can share 2-3 items with the members. I guess by now you can tell that I am pretty high on the SMWTS and everything they do from boxes, pens, ornaments and all our other projects. If I meet a woodturner I always tell him about the club and invite him to come to our meeting. That is why I wanted Bob Law and Jim Vogelsang to enter our Newsletter and Web site in the annual AAW contest. Well we just found out that we did not win in either category. We were in the top 8 newsletters and top 16 for web sites. I was a little bit down about this news until I realized that there are over 350 AAW Chapters worldwide. Probably all those Chapters did not enter the contest but I am sure quite a few did and for us to come out in the top 8 and top 16 makes me feel a little better. The judges sent us some good feedback to assist us in upgrading those areas where they thought we could improve. Bob and Jim are already incorporating some of those suggestions. However, the primary goal of both the Newsletter and Website is to benefit the members of SMWTS. We need you the members to read the Newsletter and look at the Web-site and give the editors positive or negative feedback on what you like or did not like. If we are meeting the needs of our members then we are putting out the right Newsletter and the right Web-site. 6 SMWTS Monthly Newsletter Page 6 of 10 What s Been Happening on the Ranch? Our Intermediate Students tackled Making a Bowl from a Plank. We began the workshop by laying out the design and then demonstrated how to cut out the rings on the band saw. We then discussed how to glue the pieces together. This session also introduced the students to using the jamb chuck and the waste block as turning tools. Jake Neidling then demonstrated how to turn the completed project blank into a beautiful segmented bowl. Students each received a pre-cut project kit to work with during free shop time in May. Our beginner workshop students are off to a flying start having worked with the lathe for the first time in April. They practiced turning beads and coves and can t wait till they can make something useful on the lathe. In June, they ll learn convex and concave turning as well as an introduction to end grain. The project for the month will be a weed pot! Our thanks to Vic Kaminsky for donating a Wood Slicing Bandsaw to the Ranch. Don t forget that we still need scroll chucks (Nova Preferred) and hollowing tools for the Ranch Workshop! Woodturning Safety => Pharis Safety Corner At our meeting on 16 May 2017, I was introduced as your new Safety Officer. Each month there will be an article in our newsletter concerning safety tips. There will also be a question presented that will pertain to our upcoming meeting. This month, I spoke about my ABC's of woodturning. As most know ABC stands for Anchor your tool on the tool rest. Bevel. Find your bevel point by gently bring your tool into the proper position on your work piece and finding your cutting edge. Cut. Start your cutting However, I like to add a 'D' Danger. Make sure you have not put yourself into a danger position. We will talk about many of these hazard that one must be sure do not exist while turning your masterpiece in future articles. Be SAFE in your Work Shop, so we can See you next Month. The Question for next month is What is the most dangerous machine in your shop?

10 Tennessee Women in Turning (WIT) Announce Fall Retreat at Arrowmont. During a WIT meeting at the TAW Symposium this January, they came up with an exciting learning opportunity: A woodturning-weekend retreat at Arrowmont School for Arts and Crafts this coming August! With the full support of Arrowmont and the national WIT leadership, here are the details: When we have confirmed the 15 participants, they will begin discussions to ensure that everyone's needs are provided for and questions answered.. August, 17, 18, 19, 20, Arrowmont School, Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Enrollment is limited to 15, but there is a possibility for additional spaces. Signup deadline is May 1. Barbara Dill has volunteered to be the lead instructor and demonstrator. You will have your own lathe to turn your own project or recreate the demonstration of the day. You could even sign up to be a demonstrator, but this weekend retreat will have a heavy focus on hands-on. Be prepared to be covered in wood shavings every day! They have reserved Stuart Hall house on campus, where each turner will have a bed and where will jointly prepare and eat their meals. (Costs for food will be part of pre-weekend discussions.) Registration is $220 for the weekend, which will cover Arrowmont's studio fee and your dorm room. Arrival is Thursday afternoon; departure is by 5:00 on Sunday. (Special arrangements can be made for a Monday departure.) New turners are welcome - consider bringing a friend to introduce to turning. (Arrowmont has woodturning tool kits.)
