1 SOUTH FLORIDA WOODTURNERS GUILD A CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF WOODTURNERS December 2003 NEWSLETTER VOL 16 NUMBER 12 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE: What a year! For the Guild it has been eventful, successful shows and sales, great monthly demos, conversion from paper newsletter to version (from expenditure to money saver), starting of WSFWTG-TV (the video only will get better with more experience), and our new lathe. I am sure I am leaving out something but it has been a busy year. All of this would not have been possible without the tireless work of our board, committee chairs and volunteers. Throughout this year in the president s message, I have talked about membership involvement; it remains the key to our success and improvement. My job this year has been made so much easier by the wonderful board that has jumped into action never saying no, only saying lets give it a try when an idea was presented. Ralph Callender, Doug Rogers and Rob McArdle took on the task of keeping track of all the guild tools and libraries, every meeting checking in and out not losing sight of their mission of helping the membership. Ed McSweeny has kept the books and organized them into a smooth business like machine making the transition to the next treasure a breeze. Ed also stepped down this year from chair of the events committee, but not before he organized everything the next person to fill the position would need to make all our shows a success. Jack Fisher and Bob Ulrich took on the monumental job of secretary and successfully worked out most of the bugs to our being E- MAIL available. They both also agreed to stay on another year to fine tune everything. They are real troopers. Bob Hazel put together all the monthly demos even when he was not present, helped me organize all the functions and work to be done, and agreed to follow as President so allowing a smooth transition to next year. Thank you, for going beyond the call of duty, you are the greatest. The job of being President was a breeze with you guys there. I want to thank also members who volunteered for committees, Steve Miller who took on the post of organizing all our show and sales. Brian Sequin, Ray Sequin, Judy Rubenstein for all you do at the Ramble, Brian for all the bookkeeping and speed in getting info out to everyone. Great job. Fred Stockhausen and Bill Lessard for organizing the Fruit and Spice show. Thanks to Ray Galvin, Gerry Parlato, Tony Cedeno, Chris Watzich and Joe Self for volunteering whenever I call you up for help on doing this or that. Thanks to all the membership you have made this year a pleasure, enjoy the party at the December meeting. Remember to bring along dessert or appetizer (in a disposable dish). Have fun; the fellowship found in the guild is a treasure. As you are beginning the New Year, start to think where the guild should go next year. We are already starting: Brian will be digitizing all of our back newsletters from the beginning and they will be able to the membership. The board has started talking about a December show and sale for next year, looking for a sight and ideas. I end this the way I started my first message, the guild is only as good as it s membership is willing to work. The more you do, the more you get out of it. Thank you for the privilege of being able to work with all of you David MINUTES: Steve Miller reported that Ramble preparations were going well and reviewed procedures. Lee Sky reported on the meeting to plan the 2004 AAW Convention in Orlando (July 23-25, 2004). He also reminded us that AAW has Education Grants for local clubs (at about $850). These are not highly competitive, especially of funding is matched by the club. Nominees for the Officers of 2004 were presented: President- Bob Hazel Vice President/Pres. Elect- Sean Callendar Page - 1
2 Secretary- Jack Fisher/Bob Ulrich Treasurer- Jack Skipper Tools- Ralph Callender Videos/Library- Doug Rogers Historian- Brian Sequin Instant Gallery Coordinator- Chris Watzich All were elected by the members present. The new officers will assume their duties at the December meeting. Member of the SFWG are cordially invited to stop by the meetings of the South Florida Woodcarvers who meet every Thursday 7-9:30 PM in Room 41 of South Miami Middle School [6750 SW 60 ST]. For more information phone Marvin ( ) or Bobbie ( ). Bring back The Bring Back was a Rosewood bowl made by Steve Miller and won by Lee Sky. This was the first use of the Guild s new video camera, and the close up views of Lee s skills were just great. The Fall 2000 issue of the AAW Journal has an article on this project. For information see 1) Lee starts with a green log of Seagrape or Norfolk Island Pine between centers. After make a flange and then clamping that end, he drilled a hole in the center from the tail stock end. Basically the shade is an end grain bowl with the open mouth of the bowl being the bottom of the shade. 2) Shape the exterior. 3) Hollow with a scraper, bowl gauge or Stewart tool. Lee like the forked cutting tool made by George Snyder (Gold Coast) with cutting tips made from old planer blades. 4) Smooth the inside with wall thickness like a typical bowl. 5) Cut a groove at the far side (=attached end which will be the top of the shade) for the metal shade ring that supports the shade on the lamp s finial screw. [For metal parts see: 6) Use a paint brush to clean out dust and shavings which accumulate and cause vibrations. 7) Sand the inside and leave the rim a little thicker than the rest of the shade. 8) Insert a light inside the shade (Lee uses a 25-watt candelabra base bulb attached to the tailstock with a wooden Morse 2 taper. The intensity of the glowing wall indicates its thickness. This was some show in the darkened room! 9) Cut the smooth exterior surface a few inches at a time until the deep red wall glows brightly orange. Then sand that portion. 10) Continue cutting and sanding the wall an inch at a time. 11) Part off the shade between the top flange and the headstock. 12) Lee advises not using oil to finish the shade, even though it might make it seem more translucent. He mainly uses wipe-on and spray poly finish DEMO Lee Sky (also a Gold Coast group member) gave an interesting and enlightening Page - 2
3 The 2003 Fairchild Garden Ramble It didn t rain very much and there was even some blue sky. The Guild s set up was larger and more impressive than last year. The crowds were happy and interested in the demonstrators, and many turned items were sold. Here are a few photos taken by Chris Watzich. Items for sale.
