President Gprdon Rowland Treasurer Terry Cohen Librarian Don Barr Next Meeting Saturday June, 11th Odd Fellows Hall; 520 Dana St San Luis Obispo, CA May started off with a very good meeting in as many participated in the challenge which was a Tool or Chisel Handle. The Show and Tell segment went very well. The highlight of the session was a complete coverage of CA glues and epoxy s by Charlee Smith of BSI Industries. Charlee explained the values of all the glues and the suggested methods of using the different products. Charlee was very kind in that he gave for our monthly raffle several bottles of the BSI Industries products An announcement was made that we received a check from AAW in the amount of a $ grant. Discussion followed regarding the several recommendations of which lathe will be purchased and it was voted to be the Delta with variable and reversing options. Editors note: Craft Supplies was contacted and the lathe has been ordered and delivered. It has been fired up and is a smooth and quiet operating piece of machinery Be reminded that this lathe and its companion General Maxi are available for any one who might want to do a demonstration or in the case of a newcomer a chance to try and determine if woodturning is what he or she will want to do. Discussion was held on our need to improve Television coverage during demonstrations. A combined effort between Bill Kandler and Terry Cohen showed us a step in the right direction by the set up that Bill had for the Springett Demo. More on this later. Terry has purchased for our chapter a Sony HD Camcorder.

John Long (shown above) presented his entry of a handled Phillips Screw driver. Will Hanneman offered his handle for a drill with a stop gauge. Bud Maley re-handled a # 7 Stanley chisel. Bill Peterson came in with a handle for a different application in that his BBQ tools are now re-handled and even COLOR coded Terry Cohen brought us what can be considered the most expensive handle of African Blackwood Joe Mansfield showed his offering of Walnut. Gordon Rowland was not able to attend but did have a Black Walnut fabricated with a thumb screw securing arrangement to hold any type of chisel with a 1/2 tang size. He also made his handle a 3 sided off centered piece. George Paes fabricated his made of Zebra wood. Doug Brown must have shown something but I got caught up in something else and didn t make note of it. Sorry Doug. Bill Peterson brought in an incomplete bowl of Cypress that he fears is subject to splitting, Gordon had George show the Buffing components for the High Luster finish ALA Pytlick. These were purchased on line from a Guitar and Banjo equipment supplier. Doug Brown presented a Bowl turned from what is deemed to be an Oak Burl with Bark inclusion. Note: Doug Brown has16 Throat Jig saw free. to the first grabber. Forgotten Woods, seller of tropical woods mostly from Peru is having a clearance sale, now s the time to gather some different woods for those special projects Bill Peterson introduced a friend and neighbor, that being Stan Liechty, we hope Stan will return and join us.

4 Dates to record, Comings and goings Terry has informed me that he was able to secure our regular Picnic site at the Nipomo regional park for Sunday, October 2nd. More info will be available as the time nears. Will Hanneman has relayed to me that a wine tasting room will be available to us in January or February for our annual holiday luncheon. The date is not yet set, but the days after the Christmas and New Years celebrating and traveling will be in the past as some have voiced that then will be a good time for feasting. Sharon Doughtie from Hawaii has been in contact with several California Chapters regarding a whirlwind tour through California. She is penciled in for a demo to the Central Coast Woodturners for Tuesday August 9th. The site is not yet determined. Stay Tuned. If you d like to see the work she does, Go to sharondoughtie.com Back to the TV issue. Bill Kandler purchased a 32 HDTV for his shop. He plans on using it for his teaching classes. The set up on Friday was great, Bill has his TV mounted with a ceiling arrangement. Terry made available our new Sony HD camcorder. The picture quality was great, Bill also incorporated our old Small mini cameras mounted in strategic position and was able to switch cameras for better viewing. The feeling now is that CCW will probably purchase a TV like Bill s that will be made available to the shop were demo s will be staged. This new HD TV s are much more portable and can be set up quickly. In the days to come, we must try to design a way of mounting the TV so as to give better viewing venues. Challenge for JUNE A Segmented piece, segmented is to be at least 5 pieces and no limit on how many Lets start thinking of a FUN challenge project for our PICNIC, something to get the creative juices flowing

David Springett Demo Dave started his demo with what some might call a slight of the hand. His 1st item of deceit was to insert an arrow into a glass apple.

All of you who witnessed this magic are sworn to not to divulge the process unless you receive some form of compensation, like a good chunk of wood or a tool etc.

The 2nd was a loose nail in a piece of wood. All of you who witnessed this magic are sworn to not to divulge the process unless you receive some form of compensation, like a good chunk of wood or a tool etc. When David finished his magic he went on to show how he is able to turn many pieces with free floating spikes inside, NO glue separations'. David also shared with us his jig for creating a perfect sphere. I did photograph the jig but holding it by hand resulted in a poor picture.

David was true to his word that he would not go into sanding and finishing as he believes that most turners have an idea how they prefer to finish their work. It was felt by all that I contacted that his presentation and delivery was very entertaining and educational. He was one of the few who does not carry tools and videos or books with him for sale as he comes with a bit of luggage. All his merchandise is available through Craft Supplies. To those of you who were in attendance, how about a challenge that you do the arrow thing or easier will be the captive nail, you have a few weeks to try it/ There will be a lull until the next Demo in August so if we can come up with some problem area lets try to set up another Sawdust Session. My shop is always available and be reminded that there are 4 lathes available ready to use.
