January Competition The January competition was for a natural edge bowl. First was Dave Beatt, second was Blake Smith, third was Dave Inglis followed by Jim W Bruce. Seen below are the four efforts. John Milne is seen here giving new member Debbie Coull a helping hand.

2 Annual Competition The committee have been trying to come up with a new way to run competitions which would help novice turners. Various options have been discussed but as we have said before We are open to suggestions. All of the ideas that we have come up with so far are much too complicated and frankly unworkable. We are still in the process of hopefully reorganising, so, as they say Watch this space. Please try to enter as many of the monthly competitions as possible remember you get a point towards the overall competition for every entry! Only one entry per member is allowed for each competition. Entries must comply with any criteria or specifications laid down (these are underlined in the programme). Any other suggestions for the competition programme would be greatly appreciated. The proposed programme for 2018 is as follows:- January Natural Edged Bowl February A piece or pieces of fruit March Bowl April An item with added pyrography May A decorative ornament June An item that is turned outside in (involuted turning) July A lamp base August Goblet September A time piece (to be judged in October) October TBC November A square edged bowl December A Christmas/Winter themed item This Month s Newsletter For this month some of the committee have written articles all of which I m sure you will find to be of interest. If you have a topic which the members would find of interest why not it to Dave Inglis dave.inglis@talktalk.net Your input would be very beneficial to the new Newsletter editor whoever he or she may be and hopefully somebody will volunteer. Scott Murray Article A number of members have asked on occasion how I turn fruit, i.e., apples and pears.

For apples I aim for 70mm diameter and 70mm high.

3 Scott Murray Article A number of members have asked on occasion how I turn fruit, i.e., apples and pears. More importantly though how the second side is held/located. For apples I aim for 70mm diameter and 70mm high. For pears it is 70mm diameter and 95mm high. For both apples and pears I grip the blank on a chucking spigot about 50mm diameter and turn the desired shape for the first, the stem end and sand to 400 grit. As can be seen in the following photographs the pear is located in a cup shaped jig supported on a homemade screw chuck for the second side. Below you can see the back of the cup with the recess for locating on the screw chuck. Next is the homemade screw chuck. The cup located on to the screw chuck. This is the front of the cup. The pear located in the cup. In case you were wondering the hole in the cup is for viewing the screw in relation to the drilled hole in the pear.

If you make Cherries or Grapes then a bunch is great. March meeting The March meeting will be a hands on day which will start at 1200.

4 Now the second side of the apple. Again, just a simple, homemade screw chuck scalloped on the front end to locate the first side of the apple. As with the pear the apple is already drilled on the first side and screwed onto the chuck. February competition The February competition is for a piece of fruit. i.e. Apple, Pear Orange, Banana. If you make Cherries or Grapes then a bunch is great. March meeting The March meeting will be a hands on day which will start at If you would like to man one of the club lathes please let me know. At this meeting we are hoping to have a Clinic table where we are hoping that if you have any woodturning problems you will bring them along and a member will be on hand to help you. Nick and Larry will be available to sharpen your tools and also to sell you Sandpaper. We will also be running a tuition lathe for novice turners. Can we kindly ask that if you are not a novice turner it would helpful if members don t gather in numbers around this lathe as it can be off-putting for somebody just starting out. Items for sale This space could be yours if you have anything surplus to requirements. You can use a tissue or something similar between the chuck and the fruit to prevent it being marked when it is tightened. Footnote Thank you, Scott, for an interesting article. Scott has demonstrated his jigs on quite a few occasions at the club but seeing it illustrated helps us to manufacture our own jigs. Remember that the competition is for a piece of fruit in February so you don t have long to think about this. Get your gouges sharpened and we will see what you can do at the February meeting!! Sandpaper Remember you can now buy your Sanding Cloth through the Club. We have got the following grits in stock: - 80, 120, 180, 240, 320, 400 and 600 in plain backed cloth and 80, 120, 180 and 240 on Velcro backed cloth. You will be able to purchase these in metre lengths at the very competitive price of 2 per metre from Larry Mageran at any of our meetings. He will be selling this before meetings begin and also at tea break time. This month s tip from me! I have cut some 100mm waste pipe and glued them together using hotmelt glue like a honeycomb. They are formed into a rectangle and mounted onto a piece of plywood. These are then used to hold my sandpaper, pencils (freely available from Screwfix but others are available!) The contents are labelled 120 etc.

I then use a triangular file to enlarge the spiral and then a round file. I finish sanding the spiral using the triangular file as a backing for the sandpaper from 80 up to 400 grit in stages.

I then had a short break while Bill Shearer did some pen turning.

Finally, I then made some small goblets, one 45mm high, followed by a tiny goblet 15mm high.

5 Dave Inglis Article I was on one of the small lathes for most of the afternoon. Firstly, I made a small magic wand to show some of the members how I cut spiral stems. Firstly, I shape the wand and sand it to around 120 grit. Then I use a tenon saw held at the same angle relative to the wand and slowly and gently cut as I turn the wand by hand. I then use a triangular file to enlarge the spiral and then a round file. I finish sanding the spiral using the triangular file as a backing for the sandpaper from 80 up to 400 grit in stages. I then sand the wand up to 400 grit. This removes any marks caused if the saw or files slip when cutting the spiral. Once this is done the wand can be coloured, if required and finished. I then had a short break while Bill Shearer did some pen turning. When Bill was finished I was asked back to show spiral cutting to some other members and Warren Silverwood had a go as well doing a very good spiral for a first attempt. Finally, I then made some small goblets, one 45mm high, followed by a tiny goblet 15mm high. This shows the 2 goblets I made on I used some very small homemade tools for these, particularly for the inside of the bowl of the goblet. These tools are made from old miniature screwdrivers and rug making hooks. At the end I started to make a goblet around 35 mm high with a captive ring on the stem. All went well and I managed to cut the ring well enough but when I was doing the final cuts on the outside of the bowl I made the fatal mistake of making the outside smaller than the inside. Oh well I must practice measuring!! Dave Inglis Footnote Dave has been the Newsletter editor for quite a few years now and has done a brilliant job.
