John Beaver Class Descriptions for DWR2016 Wave Bowls I will demonstrate the basic techniques to make my signature Wave bowls. First project will begin with a solid block of wood and free hand cut on a band saw. Second project will begin with a rough turned bowl and utilize my custom jig. Flying Rib Vase or Bowl I will demonstrate how to take a pre-turned / finished end grain vase or bowl, cut it up, add protruding elements and re-assemble it. Dots Bangle I will demonstrate how to add dots to a bangle. This technique can also be used on other turnings like bowls or cups. Basic Bangles I will show various techniques for mounting and turning wood bangles, as well as how to turn different shapes and proper sizing. (Good beginner class.) Rex Burningham Stabilizing Wood and Turning a Custom Twist Pen This session will show you how to stabilize and dye wood using a vacuum, for the first part of the demo. We will then explore some tips and tricks I have learned while stabilizing wood. Next we will make a custom twist pen, which will feature a scalloped cap. I will show how to customize the basic slimline kits to make a one-of-a-kind pen. I will also show some simple jigs and fixtures for cutting, drilling, gluing, trimming, turning, sanding, and finishing as I turn the pen. Turning an ALL-Wood Pen This session will show how to make an all-wood pen from a twist pen kit.. We will explore some tips and tricks I have come up with to make a one-of-a-kind All-Wood pen. I will show how to make simple drilling and turning jigs that will allow you to turn a twist kit into an All-Wood pen. We will be using stabilized wood for the body and I will feature a contrasting a wood center band. After seeing the simple-to-make jigs you can create your own all wood pen from the basic pen kits. Tips and Tricks for Making Pepper Mills This session will show how to make a mill from beginning to the end. Along the way I will show some tips and tricks I have learned over the years in making pepper mills. We will look at solid wood and glued-up laminations for the mill body. I will also show the proper sequence for drilling the blank and how to chuck the blank for turning. Sanding and finishing will also be demonstrated and discussed. 1

Jason Clark Class Descriptions for DWR2016 Unconventional Hollow Forms: Turning the Torus Whether you call it a doughnut, a bagel, or a torus the shape is instantly recognizable. Learn a unique approach to hollowing using this unusual shape. Vacuum Chucking Learn the basics of vacuum chucking and how you can build your own vacuum chucking system on a budget. Shop Made Jigs A demonstration focused on making cheap and easy jigs that make turning simpler and more enjoyable. Multi Axis with a Twist Traditional turning is done on a single axis of rotation, explore what is possible when multiple centers are used, including making a lidded box with 3 sides with a 120 degree twist built in. Art Liestman Therming I discuss the construction of jigs and show how to use them to turn curved surfaces on wood blanks The Lost Wood Process I turn spindle blanks that are made up of three laminated layers. After turning, the middle layer is removed and the two outer layers are rejoined to give a turned object that isn't round. The Design and Construction of Teapots This is largely a presentation of lots of images of wood teapots, together with discussion of various different approaches to construct them. This is intended to encourage members to think outside the box and to be inspired by the many approaches that woodturners have taken. If there is time, I will also turn a teapot body and/or turn and bend a teapot spout. Glenn Lucas Thin Wall Bowl Turning (perfecting tool techniques) No matter where I travel in the world, I find that the challenges associated with bowl turning are universal. In this demo we will take a look at selecting the right cutting edge for the job, getting the tools sharp and then mastering the cuts. From quickly rough shaping a bowl to achieving a smooth surface and fluid curves straight from the bowl gouge. With a little guidance and some practice you can master the techniques of bowl turning. 2

The Utility Bowl This demo takes a look at each task involved in making a salad bowl such as, processing the log, saving bowls with the Oneway coring system, seasoning, remounting and turning dried bowl blanks and choice of finish. I will share my unique approach gained from 25 years of bowl production. Irish Dinner Plate In this demo I will show how to make a dinner plate based on a traditional plate discovered in an archaeological excavation in Ireland. Using basic tools I will show how to get flowing curves and bead details. The use and sharpening of negative rake scrapers will also be discussed. I will show the techniques of wet sanding as this is a very efficient way to sand, creating no dust and a beautiful finish in no time. Betty Scarpino Cutting Apart and Carving Turned Forms I demonstrate how to turn, and then cut apart a disc to create a faceplate candleholder. I will also turn a pod from a green log and then show how to safely cut it apart lengthwise on the bandsaw, and then carve out its interior. These two projects are examples of the many ways to think about how turned objects can be used to form utilitarian and sculptural artwork. Surface Embellishment of Turned Objects I demonstrate how I cut grooves onto a faceplate-turned disc and then show how to bleach them for highlighting sections of bowls, vessels, and platters. Demonstrated also will be milk paint, dying, and the use of liming wax. Throughout the demonstration, I will discuss design considerations when applying embellishments. Form and Design (PowerPoint presentation) In this lively, interactive session, I show a series of images of work from a variety of woodturners to generate discussions about design considerations in woodturning. We will talk about inspiration, form, influences, copying, and the concept of limitations Curt Theobald Anatomy of a Segmented Pattern There is more to segmented turning than gluing pieces of wood together and then going to the lathe to turn a segmented bowl. This demonstration, geared to all skill levels, will help you learn where to begin or how to refine your current skills. We will discuss wood choices, wood movement, planning, design considerations and material preparation to help you better understand how to create successful segmented projects. 3

Segmented Bowl Construction Don t let the apparent complexity of a segmented pattern intimidate you. By participating in this presentation and watching the methods conveyed, attendees will learn how to accurately plan their own projects and begin to foresee any potential problems before any wood is cut. I will show how to create patterns that can be used to enhance segmented woodturnings. Many methods will be shared to help attendees more easily and accurately perform segmented pattern glue-ups in their own workshop, in addition to learning multiple time-saving techniques. Open Segmented Turning Open segmented turning is gluing multiple pieces of wood together, leaving gaps between each segment to create interesting effects, designs and illusions that highlight qualities of a variety of woods. In this demonstration, attendees will learn technique and theory, explore design concepts, and have a have a better understanding of the adventure known as open segmented turning. Segmenting Stone In this presentation we will discuss the techniques necessary to successfully glue and turn stone. There is an endless variety of stone that can be used to create interesting segmented turnings. We will discuss techniques necessary to work with Alabaster, Soapstone, Pyrophyllite, and Calcite. Come to this session to learn where to begin. Thinking Outside of the Box Sometimes it can be difficult to make segmented turnings that stand out from other segmented works. This session, which is beneficial to both segmented and non-segmented turners, will challenge attendees to think differently about the creation of their work. We will take a step-by-step look at a sculptural piece I created and discuss the steps I pursued to make my vision a reality. Some of the topics presented will be inspiration, evolution of design, problem solving, prototyping, and creation of the piece. Andi Wolf Basics of Surface Enhancement Turnings featuring beautiful wood often need no embellishment, but will be enhanced with added details. Turnings made from wood with limited grain feature can be used as canvases for surface enhancements using many different techniques. This demonstration will cover the basics of texturing using power carving tools and pyrography techniques. Coloring and Painting Techniques for Woodturnings Adding translucent inks or opaque pigments can add interesting visual features to turnings. This demonstration will cover the use of art markers for applying translucent inks and acrylic painting using brush techniques. 4

Turning and Carving Thick-walled turnings are very useful as canvases for 3D carving. This demonstration will cover methods of power carving to produce sculptural turnings. 5

Clay Foster Demonstration topics
