1 NEXT MEETING March 7, AM until 4 PM Hayesville High School Don Marks BWG News Editor demarks@smnet.net Ed Lewis from the Chattanooga Club will be our featured demonstrator. 1. Six essential techniques for the wood turner. 2. How to make a thumb top. 3. Uses of epoxy in wood turning. 4. Demonstration of various new and unusual tools. 5. Preparing for large turnings. Ed will also give some new perspectives on old techniques. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Presidents Message -- HI ALL: I hope everyone enjoyed the team demo with Frank Penta and Allan Leland, I know every time I see one of their demo s I walk away with a new insight or technique! I received 18 surveys after the meeting I have processed the results and they are included in the news letter. Don t forget our next meeting will be March 7 and Ed Lewis from Chattanooga will be here. I will be unable to attend in March I ll be in Scottsdale AZ. for my daughters wedding, but our more than capable Vice President Kevin White will facilitate the meeting. PS it would be great if we could find someone to be the videographer during the meetings, if there is anyone interested contact Kevin or I. See you all in April Marty Libman February 7 th Meeting: Our February meeting, we had 40 individuals in attendance. Marty Open the meeting with the announcement of new club shirts: up to XL the price is $26.69 and the 2X and 3X are $29.89 including tax. This includes embroidered name and logos. Also, a reminder of the Southern States Exposition is being held in April. There are great turners that will be presenting at demo this year.
2 Both Frank Penta and Alan Leland provided excellent demonstrations for making a lidded box. Frank s presentation focused on turning multi-axis boxes and Birdhouses. In lieu of an expensive multi-axis jig, Frank showed how to turn the multi-axis with a four jaw chuck. During his presentation he demonstrated the correct way to use a spindle gauge and the skew chisel so as not to get a catch. Frank made a lidded box at the demonstration with an off centered final on the top, and an off centered pedestal. Frank at the lathe making the box. The three parts of the box. The complete box. Alan Leland s demonstrated lidded box with threads. Alan s box was in the shape of a mushroom and he emphasized that the inside threads of the lid should be cut before the outside threads on the box. A relief cut was made on both the male and female threads prior to chasing each. To cut the inside threads Alan used two tools, one to support the thread chaser and the thread chaser itself. After completing the box, Alan demonstrated the process of making a sphere. After cutting the basic shape, he used a jam chuck; rotating the sphere several ways get the final spherical shape. Allan truing up the sphere. The threaded box.. The complete box. The completed sphere.
