1 Volume 15, Issue 2 February, 2006 January Demo By Bob Janka ith Steve and Alan s help Frank showed us how to make Celtic Knots at W our January meeting. This variation on the hollow sphere ornament is somewhat involved in preparation, yet it produces a beautiful piece that has people wondering How d he do that? Frank s team determined a method which requires only 1 measurement. Start with a square blank (3 in. sq. x 6 in. long or 3 in. long with waste block). Draw corner lines from the end you will turn. Where they meet should be the center of the 3 in. end (or about 1 1/2 in. from the adjacent sides and 1 1/2 in. from the end). Next, swing a miter saw to the desired angle (17-25 degrees works well), and line up the blade edge with the center mark you made earlier on one of the sides. Cut the blank. Glue in a thick veneer (1/8 in. or whatever matches the miter saw kerf). Use WIDE jaws to keep the sides from sliding. A cross slide from a drill press works well for this purpose. Once you have the sides secure, then use a long clamp to clamp the ends of the piece. Number the first side 1, then rotate the piece as if it were on the lathe and number each successive side 2, 3, and 4. Write down the angle setting from the miter saw. These steps are especially important if you make several blanks at a time and change any of the settings or sizes! Repeat the cutting, gluing, and clamping until you finish side 4. At this point, you should have a blend of roughly the same dimensions as you began with a contrasting x on each of 4 sides. You then turn it as you would a normal hollow sphere ornament. Turn and glue in a finial or an icicle, put on a finish, and you have a Celtic Knot ornament. This technique also works for bowls or any other large turning. Frank also showed us how to make bent hollowing tools from 1/4 in. annealed HC steel (High Carbon!). Use a metalworking vise to hold the steel. Heat it with MAPP gas (instead of propane!) and gently bend it to 45 or 80 degrees with pliers. Rough grind a round scraper profile on the cutting end. Heat just the tip and quench in water for hardening. Talk with Frank or Al Basham if you want some help on making your own bent hollowing tools. We must acknowledge Bobby Miller, a student at NCSU, who first tried this technique. Thanks to Frank for working out the kinks with Bobby and others to bring this exciting variation to our club!

This is a wonderful means of sharing your work with your fellow guild members. We are in need of wood for our monthly raffle. Thanks Frank for putting together such an informative demo with short notice. We re still looking for demonstrators. Steve is working hard developing the demonstration schedule, so please offer suggestions and volunteer to demonstrate. Lars Nyland will be demonstrating on February 9 at 7 pm. Lars is a past member of the board and wrote the newsletter for several years. VP s Message (cont.) He is an excellent demonstrator. The topic of his demo is Overcoming Design Problems. No doubt influenced by attending a Don Derry workshop we look forward to attending Lars s demo. It will be an informative demo that will provide new insights into the design process. It s good to have Lars back. Doug Peterson will be our demonstrator for March. His demo is titled Bowl Turning-Wood Selection & Design Considerations. He will demonstrate his techniques for creating large bowls starting with a tree trunk, then to a bowl blank, and finally turning this blank into the final piece. This presentation, which will be a combination of both slides and physical turning, will include turning a fresh trunk into a common blank which is dried for several months. He will then take a blank and work it into it s final shape. Sanding techniques will be shown on slides and then the Beall polishing system will be demonstrated. Finally some time will be given to Doug's pricing and marketing strategy. The meeting in April will be THE FIRST THRSDAY IN APRIL (APRIL THE NCSU CRAFT CENTER). Al Stirt will be our demonstrator and he will also be teaching a workshop April 6 through April 8 on platter design and treatments. The meeting has been moved up, to accommodate Al Stirt s schedule, as he will be teaching at Arrowmont the following week. I would like to thank Tom Myers for arranging the workshop and demo. For those of you who signed up for the David Springett demo at my studio, I will be collecting the money over the next couple of weeks. If you have signed up and are unable to attend, please let me know as there are limited number of spaces. I recommend that folks car pool to help minimize the parking problems. L ast month, the newsletter was sent out with a little less finish than I would have liked. So, let me say thank you to Mike Girimont and Rick Roberts for letting us visit their shops in Southern Pines, NC. Rick s shop had all the equipment a woodworker would want even a large kiln to dry his own wood. Mike s shop was located on a large piece of property surrounded in a beautiful natural setting behind his house. Two amazing shops! P ictured above is a mini-lathe workstation built by Rick Roberts. It was based on the workstation design built by Andy Gunning and Frank Penta for Andy's new shop. Rick's new version has more features like an additional drawer in the back of the bench, a cabinet to keep sandpaper accessable and organized according to grit and organized spaces for accessories.

Speaking of new members, when you borrow an item from the library, the procedure is as follows: 1. Remove the 3x5 card from it s pocket on the item. 2. Turn it over. 3. Letter your name in the top most empty space. 4. Give the card to me so that I can date stamp it. When returning items make sure to give them to me so that I can note that they have been returned. Following the meeting, I will make the appropriate entries to the website computer listing as soon as possible. WGNC Review of Learn to Turn by Barry Gross Although billed as a beginners guide to wood turning from start to finish, this book is well researched and written and has a lot to offer turners at all levels of expertise. To facilitate reference, this book is conveniently divided into four main sections which are as follows: Section 1 - Getting started. (safety, basic workshop and tools, choosing wood, sharpening tools, sanding and finishing) Section 2 - Start turning. (getting ready to turn, But Chet, I thought you said it was food for thought! turning tool exercises, spindle turning projects, and faceplate turning projects.) Section 3 - Marketing and selling your work, and Section 4 - Gallery of turnings (to provide inspiration). Additional sections which cover troubleshooting and resources are also provided. Beau s Safety Notes ere we are into New Year and we H all have our new toys from the holiday season. How many of us actually took the time to read that manual before we turned on or used that new tool? I know I did. I received a new air cleaner for my shop. I read the manual on how to hang it and how to position it for the best use. Many times We forget to read the manuals and learn the proper setup and uses for many of our tools. Please take the time to do this. It is a simple way to stay safe and ensure many more fun days of turning.
