Bruce s has 4 axis of movement ( X, Y, Z and rotary). Be sure when getting the 4 stepper motors there is no backlash in the front to back movement. He uses a Forehom for the cutter and turns it on separate from the computer program to save cost. Next the software. The computer uses G-code (.txt format) to set up the steppers motors. This is a set of instruction for one movement step: G01 X1.0 Y0 Z0 A0 F10. A is in degrees & all others are in inches. A zero point must be set first (usually at the bottom left). Z is the depth of the cut and F is the rate of movement. Simple patterns can be written on Notepad, more complex in Excel or go all out and use a CAD program. You can even scan in a photo and convert it to G-code. This G-code must be translated into a milling machine langue. Bruce likes Mac3 software for this step. Bruce said it helps to see a CNC before you try to build one. He has offered to help all who wish to venture into this area. Check out More photos on page 2

She has been turning since 1990 and is one of the founding members of the club. Barbara likes to turn hollow forms, but she really like multi-axis things. She has written 2 articles for the AAW (2007) on the subject. Barbara started her career as a military nurse, moved around the country a lot before retiring and setting down in western Hanover with her partner of 24 years, Shelly, plus 3 cats and 2 dogs. She has a workshop that s 24 X 30 ft with a loft (holds the book collection) and porches all around (for holding more things). Barbara has two lathes, Powermatic and Ricon, some how fitted into her packed work area, but she has a bit more room now (I took off with a sander she didn t use). Barbara also likes gardening, plumbing (2 toilets were in the front yard during a recent visit) and building things to store wood. Shelly has given her permission to get more wood after seeing Sid s collection at the picnic and Barbara is way behind.

Chris will be presenting a series of Robert Sorby specialist turning tools including their new Sovereign System, the interchangeable micro tools and the micro texturing system as well as other traditional tools. Chris is a very interactive demonstrator and loves questions. It s an excellent opportunity to obtain information and advice about use, technique and sharpening, all while watching an expert show you how it s done. The best part is it FREE. Picnic was another success. The group was smaller than usual this year but that just met more of Sid s good cooking for the rest of us. We had a few new faces arrive to take the house & barn tour. This year Sid s new toy is a wood kiln set-up and Penny got a big old quilting sewing machine (it s high time we saw Penny with a new toy). The evening demo was Brad B and his friend of six years, July H. Brad has been making forms for Judy s nesting Nantucket baskets. The baskets are made upside down on a heavy wooden form. Brad added some color strips to the forms so Judy can make sure the weaving is kept straight. Brad said the forms run about $10 per diameter inch. After a while basket were just getting to easy, so they came up with a way to weave a small lighthouse. All parts have a jig for it (Brad loves jigs). Judy has used reeds, cane and pine needles for weaving and offers classes. Penny s Class Project
