President s Letter Greetings, New tools will be the focus of our May 26 meeting. Klingspor s Mike Ziegler will demonstrate Kreg jigs and woodworking aids and Festool s new domino joiner will be introduced. The meeting is at 9:30 a.m. at Klingspor Woodworking Shop, st St. Drive SE, Hickory. Bring a guest with you. You know we have been looking for a new web site manager. Well, our Newsletter Editor Matt Bendzinski has volunteered to take on that responsibility. Publicity Director Bob Singletary will add editing our newsletter to his responsibilities. THANK YOU to Matt and Bob. Ron Ainaire is moving to Florida this summer and has several made-to-scale wood equipment items he can t take with him. Give him a call if you are interested in seeing what he has. He might bring some of the items to the May meeting. Our annual Woodcraft Contest will be at our September 22 picnic meeting. Do you know what you will enter in the contest? If so, great! If not, our board suggests we invite members to make something that can be used in the kitchen. The sky s the limit on that one. Just remember your woodcraft project for the contest is to have been made during the October 2017 September 2018 year. Let s have 20 projects this year! Prizes will be awarded! At our last board meeting I was asked once again to encourage members to bring show and tell projects at our May meeting. As I have said before, your project can be one which is finished or partially finished or one that failed. We enjoy seeing them all and learning from your experience. I will be at my goddaughter s wedding in Colorado when you meet on May 26. Our vice president, Charlie Brown, will lead the meeting. Bob Bob Shoffner President rhshoffner@charter.net
April Meeting Highlights In April, we had the pleasure of Jack Hastings, a longtime woodworker, an assistant manager of the Asheville area, Fletcher Klingspor s Woodworking Shop, and a specialist at making bentwood chairs, showing and explaining proper methods for sharpening a variety of woodworking tools. Club Meeting Photographs Jack Hastings is explaining, while sharpening a chisel on the Tormek sharpening machine and using a diamond sharpening stone.
Jack is explaining and demonstrating drawknife sharpening. Charlie Brown has started an octagonal mirror with marquetry flowers on the border.
Clockwise: Art Carney explains his scroll saw owl, Al hunter shows turned pens, and Johnny Hipps discusses his router sled. (Thanks to show & tell participants and to Lee Robbins for the photos.)
May Meeting Hickory Presentations on wood joinery will highlight the Western Piedmont Woodcrafters Club meeting, Saturday, May 26. The meeting will be at 9:30 AM, at Klingspor s Woodworking Shop, st St. Drive SE, Hickory. Mike Ziegler, a longtime woodworker, and specialist for the Klingspor s Woodworking Shop will review various Kreg-manufactured jigs that assist in aligning wooden parts to make joints that are fastened with screws. Tony Bradley will introduce the Festool "Domino" mortising system which uses manufactured wooden mortises and metal fasteners to assemble wooden joints. Members and visitors are encouraged to bring completed woodworking projects to present in the show-and-tell portion of the program. Attendees will have an opportunity to offer comments and ask questions about demonstrations, items shown, and other topics. The Club consists of about 70 Hickory-area woodworkers of all skill levels, from hobbyist to professionals. The club usually meets on the fourth Saturday of each month at the Klingspor s Woodworking Shop in Hickory. The exceptions are a combined November/December meeting, an annual offsite picnic, and the October Klingspor s Woodworking Extravaganza. Meetings are open to the public. For more information, call
