1 NEXT MEETING February 7, AM until 4 PM Hayesville High School $10 fee at the door Don Marks BWG News Editor demarks@smnet.net THE DYNAMIC DUO Alan Leland and Frank Penta will do the demonstration Frank will entertain us with platters and Alan will be his usual self! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Marty Libman open the meeting with the introduction of the new 2009 officers, and each provided a short synopsis of their experiences. M H LIBMAN - President I began turning in High School and have turned as a hobby until I moved from Florida to Andrews NC. where I opened my shop The Nantahala Country Workshop. I turn approximately bowls a year, a number of natural edge pieces, large platters, and spheres. My work has been in juried shows International Folkmoot Festival, JC Campbell Fall Festival and other local craft shows. I am a member of the AAW, Brasstown Woodturners Guild and the Apple Ridge Woodturners. I have studied with Mike Mahoney, Dale Larson, Dennis Leggett and Lane Phillips. I have instructed at the Folk School with Lane Phillips. I would be available for a turning demo Natural edge bowls, Spheres by eye or twice-turned bowls, on your lathe or my rolling demo lathe.
2 Kevin White Vice President I have taken two Woodturning classes at the John C. Campbell Folk School, and was very fortunate to have assisted in two classes as well. I love the (almost) instant gratification that Woodturning provides. To date I have about 100 1st turned bowls set up in various stages of drying. (Practice! Practice! Practice!) Using the knowledge I have gained through books, classes, club demos and symposiums. I have turned many different items in the past 3 years. One of the aspects of Woodturning I enjoy is the hunt and harvesting of wood and tools. I have 1 mini jet, and Powermatic. If any of you want to (trade/barter) share anything or ideas please don't hesitate to give me a call or come by. I am available most of the time This is a Christmas gag gift I came up with for a plumber friend of mine. Turns out, he thinks it is the greatest plumbing gift he has ever received. It s made from ambrosia maple and is glued up from 5 pieces because I still do not have a foster bit extension. I hope to make another one with maybe just three pieces. The fit is tighter than I would have liked but all you have to do to free the plunger from its wooden cover is hold the wooden cover up-right in one hand and thrust it toward the ground, it comes out easy. Marsha Barnes Secretary/Treasurer I am always one to try anything new. I have taught painting privately for 13 years. Then, when Doug started into woodturning, I watched, learned, and got started on all of the production work for wine stoppers, fan pulls, pens, letter openers, etc. After Bob Fisher resigned in Dec 2005, I was elected as BWG's Treasurer and secretary. I am a Resident Artist of the woodturning studio at the John Campbell Folk School. Also I am the coordinator and registrar for the Southern States Symposium held every April in Gainesville, GA. Don Marks Newsletter Publisher I have been exposed to woodturning for approximately 3 years and have been turning wood off and on for about two years now. I attended a class given by Dave Haut and Steve Ainsworth at the John Campbell Folk School. Since then I have turned a couple of bowls and some spindles.
3 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Presidents Message -- Thank you all for the turnout at my Demo in January, it was rather speedy but I hope you were able to follow the steps. I just finished up a week at the Folk School with Michael Mocho, it was really a challenge, and we did very small boxes with chatter work and other enhancements. I would really recommend this course if you want to increase your skills. We have a number of great Demos scheduled for the upcoming months, February Frank Penta and Alan Leland for an all day demo. March a turner from Chattanooga also a full day demo. Looking forward to seeing you all there! From the Coffee Table: Hello to all, I Just want to thank everyone for the support given at the coffee table and if there is anything that you would like to have other than what is being provided please let me know. The squeaky stomachs get the cookies. If anyone would like to bring some kind of snack I m sure we will welcome the offers. To date, the donations given have supported the purchases of everything needed throughout the past year to include both bi-annual events. Thanks again and take care... Kevin The January 3 rd Meeting: Our January meeting, we had 29 in attendance, with three new members. Our President gave a presentation on tool sharpening techniques, and turning a natural edge bowl. He provided a 9 step handout that recommends a 5/8 bowl gouge, a 3/8 bowl gouge, and a 3/8 detail gouge. Marty emphasized that the bowl blank should be longer than it is wide, i.e. 8 wide and 10 long to emphasize the banana shape. The bowl completed at the session Marty Libman at the lathe Bring Back -- The January bring back was from Kevin White -- a nicely turned persimmon natural edge bowl - (Kevin said he turned the natural edge to reflect what Marty was going to demo) -- Winner: Barbara Haydon New Members -- Please welcome the following new members to our Club:

BWG NEWS -- Our sympathy goes out to Ann Olsen & family on the passing of Sam Olsen. Sam was a long-time member of our Club, and a devoted woodturner. If you wish to send Ann a card: Mrs. Ann Olsen, 3226 Campbell St., Sarasota, FL (941) ; samsen@verizon.net Sam Olsen, a member of the Brasstown Woodturners Guild, passed away December 7, We found out in July that he had Lung Cancer so we were unable to spend our summer in Hayesville in A Memorial service for Sam will be held at Stipule Lutheran Church, in Sarasota, Fl. on February 7, 2009 at 2:00pm.
