1 Minutes 3 rd Tuesday at 6:30 (board meeting at 4:30) Nov 17, 2015 Board Meeting: Roger Colmark presided. 19 present. Treasure Report: Input Expenses Balance to date is $ Dues are coming due: $25 for a single, $35 for a family. Any new member paying from October onward will count for the following year. (NOTE: No dues will be collected at the December Xmas party meeting.. so bring it in January.) Correction to last month s newsletter: The demonstrator was Dale Hupp (not Haas). Sorry. Old Business: Steve Sinner s class had 7 full-time members and 2 part-time. Steve submitted a check of $980 which includes $100/day for the 5 days, plus two new memberships, plus 10% of student fees. Jerry reported that he spent eight hours cleaning and hauling out three truckloads of trash and boxes. Jerry said that one vacuum was full and furnace filters had sawdust ½ deep (Teresa says she changed filters about 2 months ago). The bathrooms were filthy. (NOTE: A lot of women will take the paper towel when they are finished to blot up any water left on a counter and in this case, it helps to get rid of dirty watermarks left from hand-cleaning.) Jerry also found a chuck hidden in the back of the cabinet that was locked up. He ended up taking it all apart with a diamond hoe and did manage to fix it. Steve fixed a new lathe whose belt would not move. Turns out the plug had been pulled out by the cord verses by the plug itself, and the wire had been pulled out of the plug holder. (NOTE: Let folks know when something is broke so it can be fixed, please). Thank you, Steve and Jerry, as this helps all of us as well as Steve s class. See student reaction to the class further down. The large band saw blades keep breaking. When shaping wood, please cut no smaller than a 4 inch circle. The guides are defective. New Business: Mark suggested that currently the lathe setup is too crowded, as folks are bumping into each other. We really should be set up for 6 larger lathes and two minis in the back. One of the older Jet minis should be converted into a buffering station and the second mini gotten rid of. After

2 some discussion, it was suggested to run a contest among members to redesign the workshop. Steve Shippey made measurements of the floor space to work with. The water bill for the neighboring potters has been coming to our mailbox. Our mailbox number is 2324, and the potter s is So before opening any mail, please check. The potter gets angry when others opens his mail (even if by accident). Chuck S. and Steve managed to fix the casters on the dolly for $15 versus the original requested $40. December is election time. Although his two years is up, Dave Johnson is willing to remain on the board. Teresa Allen reported that a Girl Scout troop is requesting a turning demo in April in Dixon, Iowa. Frank Kobilsex will be presenting in January for $150. He is from Mendota, IL and turns a number of small items. Tom did purchase two new slow drying glue for $12 a tube and does not work with accelerator. He and Laura are testing this glue. Members Meeting: Visitors: Jerry Ricky from Geneseo New Member: Jeff Berggren Committee Reports: Small Turnings group meets every 4 th Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm. In November, Leo will work with everyone to make a snowman. Hopefully those at the meeting saw his snowman earrings. Teresa Allen holds Open Turning every Monday from 9ish to about 2. All were very enthusiastic about it. The class included hollowing, using rollers on the steady rest, and finishing activities such as marking on the vessel, and peeling off a mask of different colors. One commented that is was great to work a week with like-minded folks, and would take it again if offered. Another that a lot of self-learned turning errors were corrected, and new techniques learned.

Unfortunately, Phil says this size tool will not hollow a foot and a half deep, and he felt the Monroe hollowing system works better than Trent s.

The tool does not move on the screen, but instead Phil draws around the tip of the tool and a second mark 3/8 away from the tip. This is the markings he will follow when hollowing. One of Trent s specialties is a vessel within a vessel. To create this, draw on 3 to 5 petals and mark them where you want to cut. Measure the widest distance between the petals and contour
