2 Four Easy Ways to Register 1. ONLINE The fastest and easiest way to register! Now with our user-friendly system, you can register yourself for all classes. BY MAIL Mail your registration with a check or money order to: Cayuga Community College Office of Community Education and Workforce Development 197 Franklin Street Auburn, NY Please complete one form per person. Make checks payable to Cayuga Community College. (No cash payments please). Please note: If paying by check, Social Security number will be required to receive refund. You will be enrolled as soon as we receive your registration and payment. There will be a $20 fee for checks returned for any reason. 4. IN PERSON Visit our office at Cayuga Community College, 197 Franklin St., Auburn, NY. Use entrance by the rotunda. Office is in R209. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm. No cash payments please. Cayuga s College for Kids &Teens Policies All classes will be held on Cayuga Community College s Auburn Campus or the River Glen Campus in Fulton. Students must be between the ages of to register for College for Kids and Teens classes. All students must be signed in and out each day by an adult. For students registered for both morning and afternoon classes, students must be signed out by an adult for the lunch period and signed back in before the next registered class. Payment in full must be received along with registration form. All registered students will be required to provide emergency contact information, medical treatment permission, immunization records, photo release permission, and written instructions for any special needs. A summer class enrollment packet will be mailed to you in June or within one week of registration. Health and behavior policies will be included in the summer class enrollment packet. All students must abide by these policies, and failure to do so may result in the student being dismissed. No refunds or credits will be granted in these situations. All students must register at least one week before course start date. All course changes must be made one week before course start date. Cancellation requests must be received one week before course start date to receive a full refund. No refunds will be given for cancellations made within one week of course start date. 4 5 COUNTRIES IN 5 DAYS! Ages $99 July :55pm Auburn No passport needed for this fun-filled week! Students will visit a different country each day by experiencing the culture, food, language, games, music, and people from Peru, Brazil, Cambodia, India, and Macedonia. Special guests from each country will visit. Taught by Rebecca Mindek. A WEEK AT HOGWARTS Ages $99 Join other muggles for a week-long exploration of JK Rowling s wizarding world. Start the week by being sorted into one of Hogwart s Houses. Then spend each day attending a different course of magical study from divinations to potions. End the week with a trip to Honeydukes and participation in a quidditch tournament. Taught by Kate Hardy. ADVENTURES IN THE ANIMAL KINGDOM Ages $125 July :55pm Auburn Ages $125 July :55am Auburn By most recent estimates, scientists think there are about 8.7 million different animal species on our planet! Get to know some of these amazing creatures by investigating living animals, exploring animal communication, exploring habitats and ecosystems outside, and deciding which animals do and don t make good pets. Activities may include fossil digs for NY fossils, nature walks, animal-themed games, microscope use, and a create-an-animal design project! Students may observe a demonstration of a dissection in the age class. Taught by Byron Norelius. ALL IN THE CARDS Ages $99 Spend a week learning and practicing the beneficial skills associated with card games: memory, analysis, concentration, and camaraderie. As a participant in All in the Cards, you will explore a range of challenging and engaging card games that require you to work with various peers. We will focus on learning and playing the games of Pitch, Euchre, and Hearts. Keep your brain engaged this summer by averting boredom through playing cards with friends. Taught by Kate Hardy. APP ADVENTURES: THE NEXT LEVEL! Ages $125 July :55am Auburn Continue your quest to make the next viral app! Whether you want to move past the basic techniques learned in App Attack or want to jump right in, we are ready for you! Students will choose from a selection of different web-based (HTML5) mobile apps and explore more in-depth programming concepts. Student-created apps will be accessible on a Black Rocket site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. Publishing to App Stores not included. No prior experience is necessary and students do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to take the class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. 5 ART ADVENTURES Ages $99 Ages $99 Collect treasures from the college s nature trail to use as inspiration for drawings and paintings. Develop your drawing/painting skills and make AWESOME ART! Taught by Dana Brabant. BATTLEBOTS Ages $125 July :55pm Auburn Get ready to build and remote control several robots designed to intercept and battle each other. Using Lego Technic components, Lego Mindstorms smart bricks, and Lego Power Function elements, you and your team will design several mechanisms to be tested in the ultimate arena. This class requires the ability to work cooperatively in small teams. Taught by Santiago Buigues. BIRDS, BEES, AND BUTTERFLIES Ages $99 July :55pm Auburn Students will learn the importance of pollinators on our eco-system. We will explore the nature trail, build a birdhouse or bird feeder, and plant flowers that attract butterflies. Taught by Leslie Leary. CHEEK-Y ART Ages $59 July :30-11:55am Auburn July :30-11:55am Auburn Be the most popular person at the party (after the birthday person, that is)! Cheek art is a type of face painting that allows you to create your own designs on lots and lots of faces. Learn the things you need to know about the makeup, tools, safety, and even where to begin if you wish to start your own cheek-art business. We ll practice on ourselves and on each other, and you ll get to wear your designs home every day. (Note: It is important we know about any allergies you might have before the start of the first class.) Taught by Eileen M. Parkman. DAY OF THE DEAD CELEBRATION Ages $99 July :55am Auburn Students will learn about this unusual lighthearted Mexican holiday that celebrates the happy return of our deceased loved ones for one night of partying. We will sample Mexican foods, learn about artists, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and create art (i.e. mural, sugar skulls, and paper flowers). Taught by Leslie Leary. DISCOVERY CAMP EV3 Ages $125 July :55am Auburn Build and program intricately-designed robot models that will give you insight into solutions for modern factories and industries. Using Lego Mindstorms EV3 Education sets, students will explore constructions that will emulate technology such as a bridge layer, a conveyor, an anemometer, a manipulator, and a brick sorter, among others. This class requires the ability to work cooperatively in small teams. Taught by Santiago Buigues. EXOTIC FRUITS AND VEGETABLES Ages $99 July :55am Auburn Students will learn about, taste, and prepare recipes with unusual fruits and vegetables. Taught by Leslie Leary. 6 FOOD FOR POWER Ages $49 July :30-11:55am Auburn August :25pm Auburn Is there any truth to the famous quote, An apple a day keeps the doctor away? In this course, learn about nutrient-packed foods that are excellent for your body and mind performance. We will investigate nutritional facts and ingredient labels as well as portion sizes. We will seek out the necessary nutrients and vitamins needed for healthy bodies, and find out which foods contain them. Together, we will compose a recipe book of the healthy snacks we will be making. Taught by Lisa Lloyd. GO GREEN! MAKE YOUR OWN DREAM CATCHERS AND DRUMS! Ages $49 July :25pm Auburn July :30-3:55pm Auburn fun craft-making class that also teaches the A three R s: Recycle, Reuse, Repurpose! Plus story telling of Native American drums and dream catchers! Taught by Beverly Owen. HEROES AND MONSTERS: FILM ANALYSIS Ages $99 July :55am Auburn The exploration of the origins of fantasy and antagonists/heroes (of all natures) in film, accompanied by written analyses (précis) of film. Taught by Peter Cavana. FRENCH CHILDREN S LITERATURE Ages $99 July :55pm Auburn Poetry, short stories, and novellas (ex: Le Petit Nicolas, Bonsoir Lune, and Le Petit Prince); exploration of French culture and instruction of basic language structures/vocabulary/phrases. Taught by Peter Cavana. G2 - THE GIRL GAMERS CLUB Ages $125 July :55pm Auburn Hang out with friends, have fun, and learn key S.T.E.M. skills in this one-of-a-kind class! Candy Crush, Facebook, and Instagram were all built by people who understand the foundations of design and technology. In this class, learn the basic elements of 2D Game Design. Each day will include a tech challenge and a profile of the female stars of the tech world. Student games will be available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Games are only compatible on PC computers. Mac versions can be created after the program for a $15.00 conversion fee. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Offered in Partnership with Black Rocket Productions, LLC. HISTORY OF BOARD GAMES Ages $99 Students will learn about the stories behind board games that have been popular over the years. Working together, they will discuss ideas and create a new board game. Taught by Leslie Leary. HOOKED ON YARN! Ages $49 July :25am Auburn July :25am Auburn Need a new scarf? Maybe you d like to make a present for a friend s birthday? No problem. Learn to crochet and make your own special creations. You ll find out about the tools, yarn, and stitches to make lots of fun projects. And, you ll learn the special, secret language to decode crochet patterns so you can make more scarves, mitts, stuffed animals...anything your imagination can dream about, made with yarn and a crochet hook. 7 IT S GREEK TO ME! Ages $99 July :55pm Auburn Students will create art projects, sample the food of the Greek gods, and learn about the constellations and the Olympics. Taught by Leslie Leary. LEGO WEDO BOTS Ages $125 July :55pm Auburn Build cool robots with Lego WeDo sets, code using intuitive visual programming, and have fun playing with the robots you build. Among other projects, we will build: a space shuttle, a stampeding bull, a racing car, a bulldozer, jumping frogs, and a helicopter. At the end of the week students will be given a challenge to solve by creating their own solutions and applying the concepts learned in class. This class requires the ability to work cooperatively in small teams. Taught by Santiago Buigues. MAKE YOUR FIRST 3D VIDEO GAME Ages $125 July :55am Auburn Ages $125 July :55pm Auburn Try this new version of a Black Rocket classic! This class allows you to develop a game concept that goes well beyond the limitations of the traditional 2D game design classes. Students will learn the physics behind 3D games, explore beginner event scripting, level design, controlling flow of gameplay, and storytelling. Student-created games will be available on a password-protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. MATH GAMES Ages 8-11 $49 July :25am Auburn July :30-11:55am Auburn Does your teacher say to practice your math facts? Well, these games will make it a little easier by making it more fun. You won t even realize that you are practicing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. We can even practice fractions. Some games involve using logic and strategies, and can be played by yourself or with a friend. Most games use dice and cards. Taught by Joyce Brunet. MEET THE REPTILES! Enjoy the experience of meeting lovable lizards, spectacular snakes, and tremendous turtles in a safe and fun environment. Learn about habitats, behaviors, reptile biology & ecology, conservation, and most importantly, understanding your role as a responsible reptile pet owner. Enjoy interacting with a variety of reptiles and complete the week with a fun and educational reptile-related craft. Added bonus learn about the fascinating world of arachnids, including those whose habitats we share here in Central NY. Taught by Diana Sleiertin. 8 MOJANG MINECRAFT MINECRAFT ANIMATORS Ages $125 August :55am Auburn Ages $125 Bring your favorite Minecraft characters to life in an animated short film! Learn how studios like Pixar and Disney make movies such as Inside Out and Frozen by using techniques like key framing, tweening, texturing, and animating rigged 3D models! Student projects will be available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. You do not need to own a Minecraft account to use the software in this class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Offered in Partnership with Black Rocket Productions, LLC. MINECRAFT MODDERS Ages $125 July :55am Auburn Ages $125 July :55pm Auburn Use your favorite game to learn the basics of modding and foundations of programming. Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mod! Introductory coding will also be taught through a simulated environment inspired by Minecraft. Student projects will be available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. To access their project at home, students must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone, and game console version of Minecraft are not compatible. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Offered in Partnership with Black Rocket Productions, LLC. NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY Ages $55 July :30-11:55am Auburn Explore the work of world-renowned photographers and then grab your own digital camera and dive in to capture your own amazing images of nature! You will learn how to take close-up photographs of plants, insects, rocks, and more. You will explore concepts such as lighting and contrast when you photograph cloud formations and weather. Once you have mastered photography, you will upload your images to a computer and learn how to use digital imaging software to enhance your work. Bring a digital camera. Taught by Crystal Mason. RENEWABLE ENERGY Ages $125 July :55am Auburn Join us and explore renewable energy sources with Lego Power Functions, Lego Technic and K Nex components. Using generators and solar panel elements, we will investigate energy supply, transfer, accumulation, conversion, and consumption through exciting hands-on activities, building fun contraptions, and resolving a number of challenges. This class requires the ability to work cooperatively in small teams. Taught by Santiago Buigues. RETRO CRAFTS Ages $99 Students will make modern versions of crafts that were popular in the 1960s and 1970s such as tie-dye, yarn crafts, paint-by-numbers, and candle-making. Taught by Leslie Leary. MOVIE CLUB Ages $99 July :55pm Auburn Enjoy a movie in a relaxing, cool environment. In this course, we will watch movies of different genres and then complete fun activities based on the movies! From light and color to sound energy and super cooled gases, you ll experience some amazing reactions and tricks and learn some fun home science that you can show to your family and friends! Activities may include freezing balloons, solar prints, UV detection bracelets, penny alchemy, yogurt making, food chemistry, and more! Taught by Byron Norelius. SMARTY PANTS MATH Ages 8-11 $49 July :30-11:55am Auburn July :25am Auburn This is for the young mathematicians that enjoy math with a twist. Explore and make sense of the phenomena of numbers and math concepts in new ways. Numbers are only a part of math. Some people see patterns and shapes that others don t. Have fun exploring number patterns, solving mathematical puzzles, using logic, and learning some calculating tricks that will have your friends think you are a mathematical genius. Learn some puzzles and number trickery that will keep them stumped. Taught by Joyce Brunet. THE ART OF MAKING DREAM CATCHERS AND MEDICINE BAGS Ages $49 July :30-3:55pm Auburn July :25pm Auburn Learn the Native American history of both medicine bags and dream catchers, and make one of each to take home! Taught by Leslie Leary. WRITING YOUR EXPERIENCE Ages $49 July :30-11:55am Auburn Ages $49 July :25pm Auburn In this workshop, students will first construct a journal to record observations. Throughout the week, the class will complete exercises to identify what inspires them, then use their inspiration to write a creative work of their choice, whether it s poetry, a story, scientific analysis, self-reflection, or another genre. Students will begin the week by learning and practicing mindfulness techniques to observe and record that experience. They will use present-moment awareness to hone their observation and to tap into their creativity throughout the week as well. Taught by Katherine Stout. STRONG GIRLS WORKING! We will learn a variety of body weight movements, agility drills, and an introduction to lifting weights.
