2 Summer 2017 Dear students, Welcome to the start of an unbelievable summer at Broward College! The Kids & Teens College (KTC) has been at the forefront of summer camp programming for the past 30 years. We continue to be a leader in summer education by creating fun activities with the academic enrichment you need to keep your learning skills sharp. This session promises to be the best one yet! You will be able to choose courses in areas such as STEM, Arts,, Aviation, Health Sciences, and Business. Each course will showcase career options and build the foundation for skills you will need to succeed. For an example of career options within a Pathway, check out the Career Ladder on page 18. We put the fun in learning at KTC. At the end of the session, we know you will leave with a wealth of knowledge, a better understanding of your future career, and lifelong friends and memories. 3 GENERAL INFORMATION SESSION DATES: Classes are scheduled to meet one day per week for a duration of six weeks. The College will be closed July 3-7. Most classes are two hours long for a total of 12 hours unless otherwise noted. The complete summer schedule is located at a glance on pages MONDAY - 6/19, 6/26, 7/10, 7/17, 7/24, 7/31 TUESDAY - 6/20, 6/27, 7/11, 7/18, 7/25, 8/1 WEDNESDAY - 6/21, 6/28, 7/12, 7/19, 7/26, 8/2 THURSDAY - 6/22, 6/29, 7/13, 7/20, 7/27, 8/3 FRIDAY - No Class DAILY SCHEDULE : 7:30am - 8:00am First Period: 8:00am - 10:00am Second Period: 10:10am - 12:10pm Lunch: 12:10pm - 12:40pm Third Period: 12:45pm - 2:45pm Fourth Period: 2:55pm - 4:55pm : 5:00pm - 5:30pm IMPORTANT POLICIES: While the Kids & Teens College (KTC) program is an educational and fun experience, please impress upon your young student that he/she is attending classes on a college campus and appropriate behavior is expected. To ensure the safety and well-being of our students, your student must be registered for course(s) in order to remain on campus. WAYS TO REGISTER: ONLINE: IN PERSON: Central, North, and South campuses. REGISTRATION ASSISTANCE: COST: Classes are each (unless otherwise noted) Note: Some classes may also require supplies to be brought from home REFUNDS OR TRANSFERS: Please note, no schedule changes or refunds are given after the first day of class. DAILY PROCEDURES: Parents must drop off students at their classroom. Please be prompt at dismissal. If students are not picked up on time, they may be taken to the designated pick-up area (see below). A charge will apply for early drop off (wind up) and late pick-up (wind down). Parents, please instruct your child to speak with the campus supervisor if you have an emergency and will be late for pick-up. PROGRAM OFFICE: Central Campus Miramar Town Center North Campus Pines Center South Campus Willis Holcombe Center The Academy (Pick-up locations: Classroom - See your class schedule) CLASS CANCELLATION: KTC reserves the right to cancel courses due to low enrollment, college emergencies or other extenuating circumstances. You will be notified if this occurs and sent a complete refund within business days. DISMISSAL: Students may be dismissed from a course and/or program for non-payment of fees, behavior, and/ or violation of Broward College and KTC rules and policies. No refunds will be given in the event of dismissal. ILLNESS: Students that are sick should not attend class. Parents/guardians will be called if the student becomes ill. MEDIA FORM/PHYSICAL RELEASE: A release form must be completed and given to the instructor on the first day of class. SUPERVISED LUNCH 12:10-12:40pm: Students must bring a bag lunch every day. Learn how to use tools to publish an e-book. 12 HRS. DESIGN, PHOTOGRAPHY, & FASHION NEW! Enhance your creative appeal and learn what it takes to begin a career in the art world. Discover the pathway to becoming a fashion designer, photographer, and interior fesigner in this hands-on course. Discover the art industry through hands-on activities. Bring camera to class for a live photo session. 12 HRS. GRAPHIC DESIGN WITH PHOTOSHOP NEW! Become a graphic designer and learn photo editing and composition skills using Photoshop. Practice with real-world examples, challenges, and thought-provoking assignments, and learn how to determine a client s needs. Start building your online portfolio to enter the industry. 12 HRS. BUSINESS REAL ESTATE INVESTOR NEW! Students will learn through practical concepts used by professionals in the real estate industry. Discover the concepts of capital and properties while learning about Florida real estate. Explore the effects of higher interest rates and strategies for a changing market. 12 HRS. SHARK TANK - BUSINESS INNOVATION NEW! Learn the fundamentals of starting and running your own business. Become an entrepreneur of your virtual company and get ready to be successful! Learn how these healthcare professionals assist patients through working with optometrists, ophthalmologists and eye care corporations. Discover how algebra, writing, and an attention to detail are utilized in this profession. 12 HRS. AVIATION AVIATION CAMP: AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER NEW! Discover what it takes to become an air traffic controller and participate in a flight operations simulation. You will explore areas of the air traffic controller and airport operations. Learn how to guide pilots and their planes from taxi to takeoff, through the air and back safely on the ground. 12 HRS. DRONE PILOTS NEW! Learn what it takes to become a drone pilot for a Small Unmanned Aircraft System (suas). Students will prepare to pilot a drone and gain knowledge through activities. Discover how drone pilots apply their skills in different industries. This course covers basic Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations for flight. 12 HRS. AVIATION CAMP: YOUNG PILOTS NEW! Man the controls in the cockpit and learn how to become a pilot. Learn the different parts of a plane and practical avionics and plane maintenance. 6 STEM SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING & MATH APP ADVENTURES: THE NEXT LEVEL! Continue your quest to make the next viral app! Whether you want to move past the basic techniques learned in App Attack or want to jump right in, we are ready for you! Students will choose from a selection of different web-based (HTML5) mobile apps and explore more in-depth programming concepts. Student projects will be accessible on a Black Rocket site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. Publishing to App Stores not included. 12 HRS APP ATTACK! Take the first steps into the world of mobile app design and customize your own game app! Using a specialized app and game development tool, students will explore the world of web-based (HTML5) mobile apps. In addition to learning the basics of mobile app design and game development, you will also see firsthand how the world of app publishing functions. Student-created apps will be accessible on a private site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. Publishing to App Stores not included. No prior experience is necessary and students do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to take the class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. 12 HRS BLUEPRINT: DESIGN IT, BUILD IT NEW! Learn the basics of structurally sound architecture feats. Students will complete activities to uncover how buildings are made from conceptual draft to finished product. This course includes an overview of software used in the industry. 12 HRS. CODE BREAKERS Calling all future coders, programmers, and designers! Learn the basics of coding languages like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS through a series of web projects and design challenges each day and be on your way to becoming the next tech star! Projects will be available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. 12 HRS CSI BROWARD CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION NEW! Ever wondered what it would be like to be on a real crime scene investigator team? This course focuses on careers in crime scene investigations and forensic science. Students will participate in activities and learn how crime scenes are processed. 12 HRS IT CODING BOOTCAMP - Certificate Program Want to learn HTML5 and CSS3? Join in and learn CSS3 styles, concepts about webpages, and HTML5 features. Training includes web principles, writing code, and much more! Students will learn about pathways to technology careers and the education needed to achieve their dream job. Upon completion, students will receive a certificate of completion and have the option to take the Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) Developer certification exam. 120 HRS 5 LEGO FILMS AND STOP ACTION! Make your LEGOs come to life! Bring in your favorite action figures or LEGOs and create a short film with your friends. Whether you want to recreate a scene from Star Wars or design a world of your own, this class brings your dreams to the screen. Students will need to bring in LEGOs or action figures from home, but all other equipment provided. Student-created films will be available on a password protected website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. 12 HRS 6 REGISTER TODAY! broward.edu/youth
7 MINECRAFT ANIMATORS Bring your favorite Minecraft characters to life in an animated short film! Learn how studios like Pixar and Disney make movies like Inside Out and Frozen by using techniques like keyframing, tweening, texturing, and animating rigged 3D models! Student projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. You do not need to own a Minecraft account to use the software in this class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. 12 HRS MINECRAFT DESIGNERS If you love the game Minecraft, and always wanted to design your own world, this class is for you! Learn how to create a custom map, the basics of creating 3D models using a new software to design your very own objects, how to build with Redstone and Command blocks, and create custom textures for you to import at home or share with friends. To access their project at home, students must own a PC/Mac version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone, and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible. Parent address is required to use 3D modeling software. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. 12 HRS MINECRAFT MODDERS Use your favorite game to learn the basics of modding and foundations of programming. Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mods! Introductory coding will also be taught through a simulated environment inspired by Minecraft. Student projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. To access their project at home, students must own a PC/Mac version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone, and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. 12 HRS MYTH BUSTERS UNPLUGGED NEW! Use science to prove or disprove common myths and urban legends. During this class, participants try to bust some science myths while learning about scientific principles using interactive activities. 12 HRS ROBOTICS: ARDUINO The program offers a hands-on, project-based learning approach to teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) concepts in a fun and engaging way. This program helps to prepare future generations of engineers and scientists as well as lifelong learners. Arduino robots are board programmable robots. 24 HRS $249 ROBOTICS: NXT ROBOTICS The program offers a hands-on, project-based learning approach to teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) concepts in a fun and engaging way. This program helps to prepare future generations of engineers and scientists as well as lifelong learners. NXT robots are programmable building block robots. 24 HRS $249 ROBOTICS: UNDERWATER ROBOTS Hands-on educational fun opportunity where students will each construct and play an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) complete with lights, camera, and monitor. 24 HRS $249 VIDEO GAME ANIMATION Take your game design skills to the next level by creating and animating your own character sprites, objects, and backgrounds. Start with a name, develop the character s personality, signature moves, special powers, and a story line. Finish with a fully animated character to be used in your very own game. Students do not need any prior experience in game design, animation, or sketching.
