CHESS Monday, October 15 th December 10 th (8 Weeks) Time: 8:15 9:15AM Price: $125 Location: Library Class Size: Class limited to 14 students per instructor Instructor: Jorge Sammour-Hasbun, World Chess Champion Have fun learning chess with world-class chess competitors and FUN, gifted teachers. Jorge Sammour-Hasbun and colleagues return for the 6th consecutive year to teach the basic and essential strategies of chess. Jorge Sammour-Hasbun, former Child World Champion and 2007 & 2008 World Blitz Chess Champion, has been managing the Boston Blitz Team for the USA Chess League since 2009, tutoring chess students nationally for more than 14 years, and is currently teaching the Brown University Chess Team. Children who are taught chess do better in school. Chess improves grades, test scores and educational performance. Research shows that chess improves math, reading and a whole host of developmental skills. Beginning and advanced players are welcome. Classes meet Mondays 10/15, 10/22, 10/29, 11/5, 11/19, 11/26, 12/3, 12/10 No Class 11/12 BEAD MANIA!! Thursdays, October 18 th December 6 th (6 Weeks) Price: $50 (includes supplies) Location: Art Room Class Size: Minimum 6 and Maximum 10 students Instructor: Bobbie Schaeffer Do you love beads? Would you like to learn how to make your own? Join this class for a fun-filled bead making adventure! You will use your hand-made beads for creating a variety of jewelry. Each class you will make different beads for a project (necklace, bracelet or earrings). Keep your hand-made jewelry for yourself or give them to family and friends they would make wonderful gifts and the holidays are just around the corner. The material used is Sculpey Clay, an easy to use oven-baked clay which comes in a rainbow of colors. Return students are welcome as some new projects will be introduced as well as old favorites. Classes meet Thursdays 10/18, 10/25, 11/8, 11/15, 11/29, 12/6 No class 11/1 and 11/22

All you need are sneakers and a tennis racquet. Kids are divided up by skill and age appropriate levels. Beginners welcome!! Don t have a racket? Borrow one of ours. Build not one but TWO amazing mechanical mobile units: First, the Amphibian over, which uses up-cycled water bottles as pontoons to travel over both land and water environments! Next we'll build the mysterious Doodling Robot, which uses markers for legs and draws its own abstract art patterns--create a Robot Mural! Along the way we'll figure out Engineering Puzzlers, build towers to the ceiling, and learn about Momentum, Rate and Force! 5 COMPUTER KEYBOARDING Mondays, October 15 th December 3 rd (7 weeks) Time: 8:15-9:00 AM Price: $65 Location: Computer room Class size: Minimum 12 and Maximum 20 students Instructor: Mrs. Gorter, Hanaford School Librarian Mrs. Gorter is teaching a fun new way to learn computer keyboarding. This class will teach keyboarding using the "EduTyping Program" on Hanaford's computers in the computer lab. Keyboarding drills, fun games, instant feedback on accuracy and speed, and the ability to view progress are all part of this program! Classes meet Mondays 10/15, 10/22, 10/29, 11/5, 11/19, 11/26, 12/3 No Class 11/12 CARTOON DRAWING Wednesdays, October 17 November 21 st (6 Weeks) Price: $50 (includes supplies) Location: Cafeteria Class Size: Maximum 20 students Instructor: Eric Hammerschmidt, cartoonist Do you love to doodle and draw? Wednesdays, October 17 th November 28 th (7 weeks) Time: 3:20 4:20 PM Price: $60 Class size: Maximum 20 students Instructor: Kathy Perkins Throughout this program, children will interact with dogs in a positive and safe manner. They will participate in bite prevention program and they will learn dog care and owner responsibility. Children will gain knowledge of various AKC breeds, and will learn about the assorted AKC events in which dogs compete, including agility and fly ball.
