1 RVCSD Kerhonkson Elementary School Home of the Little Ganders DECEMBER, 2015 VOLUME 3, ISSUE 3 Principal s Message We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Once again the holiday season is here. We have many fun events in store for the students this month! Each year we get to listen to the band from the Intermediate School or Junior High. This year we are excited to welcome the Intermediate School band on December 22. They will perform for the students and also tell the students about each instrument. On Wednesday, December 23 we will be watching holiday specials in the gym. Please send your child to school that day in pajamas. Students may bring a blanket and pillow to use in the gym as well. Also, our annual coat drive will be happening soon we will keep you posted! Give a call or send an with any questions, comments or suggestions you may have! 2 Page 2 VOLUME 3, ISSUE 3 Math Notes by Mrs. Strauss Making Math Fun and Interactive for Students At KES the students work hard to learn math and understand math concepts and skills. There are many fun and easy ways to help students practice their math skills. We are developing different interactive resources for students in different grade levels to practice both in the classroom and at home. All KES students have access to IXL.com IXL is an interactive program which is broken down by grade level and includes hundreds of activities for each grade level to help improve and encourage students in understanding math concepts and skills. Each student has a username and password. Please contact your child s teacher to get their login information or contact me. To access the website: For 3 rd grade students: ST Math! This program was presented at Curriculum Night and all third sixth grade students in the district now have ST Math as part of their math curriculum. ST Math uses interactive, visual animation to convey math concepts and develop better understanding. Each student has a 13 character password they use to login to the program. 3 Page 3 VOLUME 3, ISSUE 3 Other games and activities: Deck of cards Can be used to play different games depending on the child s age and ability. Here are some examples Memory game sort the deck or cards using only the 2, 3, 4, and 5s. Place them face down in four groups of 4. Each person takes a turn turning over 2 cards to find a pair. If they get a pair they keep the cards, if not the place the cards back face down in the same position they were. More or less cards can be used depending on the ability of the child. Play until there are no more cards. Making ten sort the cards into piles of seven (some piles will have 8) face down. Next, turn the top card face up in each pile. Each child will take a turn trying to add 2 cards together to equal 10. (The face cards can be 10s or removed and aces are 1s). They count the cards and keep the cards if they make 10. (Challenge children to use 3 or 4 cards to make 10). If no one can make a 10, you can create a new pile by moving a card that is face up to a new pile (no other cards will be under it) and turn over the next card from the pile you took the card. The game ends when no cards together can make a 10. Count the cards to see who has more. Multiply Dash sort the cards into 2 each piles, keeping the cards face down. At the same time both children flip over the top 2 cards and multiply them together. The first person who calls out (dashes) the correct answer keeps all the cards. If both children have the same product they flip over 2 more cards and shout out their answer and this time whoever says the correct answer first gets to keep all 8 cards. Keep playing until only one person runs out of cards. Read on to get involved in the monthly Math Blaster Challenge. Check next month for more fun and creative ways to practice math. Reminder! 4 Page 4 VOLUME 3, ISSUE 3 KES MATH BLASTER CHALLENGE Be the first student in your class to answer your grade level math challenge question and win. Students must submit their answer with a drawing, number sentence (and written statement 1 st 3 rd grades) with their name, grade and teacher and place it in the box outside Mrs. Strauss classroom (2 nd floor room 208). Each month different students will have the opportunity to win. Get ready to challenge your brain! Please send your child in pajamas on Kindergarten: Antonio had an apple with 8 seeds in it. Some seeds fell on the ground and now the apple has 3 seeds. How many seeds fell on the ground? December 23rd for school-wide pajama day! Students may also bring a blanket for use in the gym when we watch holiday videos. First Grade Emma used tally marks to keep track of how many dresses she had for her dolls to wear. For her birthday she got 7 more dresses, now she has 15. Use tally marks and a number sentence how many dresses she has and to show how Emma keeps track of the dresses. Second Grade Hailey has a collection of rocks that she displays in boxes in her room. Each box holds 10 rocks. If Hailey has 99 rocks how many boxes does she need to display her whole collection? Third Grade Kenneth and his friend Michael has been collecting stickers since they were babies. Kenneth has 19 stickers and Michael has 29 stickers. They are going to share them with their friends Maria and Nicolina equally. How many stickers will each of them get? Must include a drawing, number sentence and written statement.

5 Page 5 Thanksgiving at KES Many of our classes held Thanksgiving parties everything from full feasts to dessert parties! Enjoy these great photos! Counseling Corner with Miss Tupper It has been so busy here at KES, I just want to share some of the things going on in the counseling room! Students have been making relaxation glitter bottles to help us understand how we feel when we are upset or sad about something-all of the glitter is swirling around and things may feel overwhelming. As the glitter settles slowly we watch and take a few deep breaths thinking of ways to cope or solve our problem. These glitter bottles are super fun to make and students really enjoy using them to help talk about stressors. Another way to help students with stress is a Worry Box; students write down or draw what they are worried about and put it in the box, now the box has the worry and students can continue on with their day. Students and I discuss the idea of putting a worry aside for a while so they can focus on school and enjoying their time with friends. The first week of December I will be visiting classrooms and teaching thirty minute deep breathing and yoga lessons to the students so hopefully they can use some of these tools if they are feeling anxious at school or home. 6 KERHONKSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PTA November, 2015 November was a busy month and the PTA would like to thank everyone who has participated this year thus far! Your support is greatly appreciated! Vanaver - Every year the 3rd graders rehearse and put on a cultural dance performance taught by Vanaver. Kerhonkson and Marbletown classes worked together to perform dances in a program called We are one. The PTA would like to give a huge round of applause to our 3rd graders. Their dance performance was phenomenal! We will be providing all 3rd grade parents with a FREE copy of the performance! Great job to everyone who was involved! Next PTA Monthly Meeting: December 9th We are currently at 55 members and our goal is 82. Join the PTA today! Your input and time is greatly appreciated. Thanksgiving Donations We are very proud to say that with all the wonderful support of our community we were able to provide 8 complete meals to families and in addition we were able to make additional boxes filled with all the fixings of side dishes. Thanks for your support! Applebee s Panckake Breakfast On Saturday November 28th, the PTA partnered up with Applebee s in Kingston for our annual pancake breakfast fundraiser. We served over 70 people in just a two hour time frame and rose over $400!! Please attend the next PTA meeting on Wednesday; 12/9/15 at 6:30 PM. We will be discussing the upcoming fundraisers such as the Tricky Tray, Coupon Books, Krispy Kreme and Book Fair. We will also be discussing event planning for the Holiday Fest, Dance and Hoop Shoot.
