2 The Livingston Chess Club By of NJ Scholastic Chess has enjoyed explosive growth in recent years and has shed its reputation as a game only for intellectuals. Beyond the sheer pleasure of playing, studies have shown that chess improves academic performance, concentration, logical thinking, and social skills. The Livingston Chess Club, an inter-generational chess club, is an initiative sponsored by the Asian Indian Organization at Livingston, Sanskriti of NJ. The club opened on September The club meets once a week for instruction and recreational play and is open to all chess enthusiasts in Livingston and nearby communities who are 7 years or older. The club offers instructions for scholastic beginners on Sundays at the Horizon School, 71 Okner Parkway, Livingston. The Club is open through the School Year on Sundays, 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at the Horizon High School and follows the Livingston School District Calendar. The club calendar is available. The club offers Beginner and Advanced Beginner Classes. These group lessons are conducted by a Chess Coach and have a capacity of up to 20 students per coach. Slots are filled on a first come first served basis. Registrations are currently closed. Please send an to livchessclub@gmail.com to inquire regarding placement for this school year. Lessons run for 40 minutes, and members are expected to attend lessons when they are offered. While the coaches will put best effort to cover missed lessons, there is no makeup lessons offered. The second half of each session is devoted to play. Students who attend regularly, complete homework puzzles and play a game every day will make great progress. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to stay, and are mandatory to be present in the premises for members who are 8 years or younger. Sets and boards are provided. Members are welcome to bring snacks; no food is available in the club. Those who wish may visit the club before deciding whether to join. Members are divided into groups based on ability and experience. The club ranks members according to their wins and losses, and the club maintains an incentive system rewarding our members for teaching, participating in lessons, and having committed parent volunteers helping the club in other ways. The club hosts tournaments on the first Sunday of every month. The tournament is open to all in the community. Chess Club students are required to play in the monthly tournaments. Chess players will be paired with players of equal ability either by their USCF ratings or club rankings or at the sole discretion of the Chess Coach The club will expand instruction for Intermediate and Advanced levels depending on the community interest and chess ability among the students. Additional sections and levels of instruction is solely dependent on community participation and committed volunteers. Tuition will be decided when these levels are offered.
3 Course Details Here is a description of the current courses offered by the club: Beginner Pre Requisites: None! Open to all beginners with little or no experience Course Objectives: The beginner level covers names and movements of all pieces as well as their position on the chess board. Students will be taught the very basic piece movements and the difference between a check, checkmate and a stalemate. It covers simple checkmate puzzles involving K+R, K+Q and R+R. Students will learn about forks, skewers, pins and sacrifice. They will be playing at least one game in every class using simple chess moves and tactics. They will be taught how to use double attacks and discovered attacks while playing chess. Simple one move checkmate problems will be covered. Goal: To build an interest in playing chess and use basic skills to move to the next level. Student Expectations: Attending the class regularly and enjoy playing Practice playing one chess game everyday Complete homework and participate in classroom Participate in monthly chess club tournaments Advanced Beginner Pre-requisite: Students are expected to know the names and movements of all the pieces as well as their position on the chessboard. They should have basic understanding of check, checkmate and stalemate. Students should be able to do the basic checkmate puzzles (K+R, K+Q, R+R). Students are expected to understand forks, pins, skewers and sacrifice. They should be able to solve 1 move checkmate problems. Course Objectives: The beginner advance level covers chess notation and chess language. It covers famous chess openings, middle game and end game variations. Advance use of forks, skewers and pins. Understand when to castle and when not to castle. Practicing chess tactics and strategies and solving 2-3 move chess puzzles. Analyze popular chess games and openings. Each class will conclude with a game either among the kids or playing against the coach. Students making good progress will be recommended to join USCF and participate in rated tournaments. Course Material: Student is responsible bring in a notebook and the recommended chess book, Play Winning Chess by Yasser Seirawan. Goal: To participate in USCF rated team and individual tournaments representing the Livingston Chess Club Student Expectations: Attending the class regularly and enjoy playing chess Complete homework and participate in classroom Practice playing one chess game everyday
4 Tuition The fee is nominal compared to nearby chess clubs, thanks to the generous support from Sanskriti of NJ. The club offers two programs, LearnAndPlay o Beginner -- The cost is $300 for the school year o Advanced Beginner The cost is $500 for the school year Annual Membership Anyone who wishes to play with other chess enthusiasts can take advantage of this membership. The membership dues are $50 for the calendar year. It is not prorated and there is no instruction available in this program. Monthly tournament entry fee is $5. All USCF rated participation will be extra. There is a late fee of $50 for all students registering after Nov 25 th All members are required to sign the Chess Club Honor code at the time of registration. 6 Livingston Chess Club Honor Code The following rules were designed so that all members will be able to enjoy themselves at the Livingston Chess Club. Please read these rules thoroughly and discuss them with your parents. Then return the bottom portion to the coach or chess club manager as soon as possible while keeping the top portion for your reference. 1. I will sign in to chess club each week. Students will be released to a parent or designated adult who signs them. 2. I will arrive at the chess club ready to play chess. After I finish each game, I will quickly seek out a partner for another chess game. 3. I will respect other players by playing quietly and entering and leaving with as little disruption as possible. 4. I will abide by all rules of sportsmanship and etiquette. 5. I will respect Livingston Chess Club equipment by handling chess boards, pieces, clocks, handouts and books carefully. 6. I will clean up my chess materials (counting and packing up pieces) so that I will be ready to leave by the ending time. 7. I will notify my coach about chess club attendance and follow his/her instructions. 8. The chess club manager and coaches have the right to exclude players who are not following these rules. 8 Chess Club: Learn basics of chess and be able to play and advance to the next level. We will use a Rewards system to encourage students to come on time, participate in class, and do their homework regularly. Club Tournament will be held on the first Sunday of every month. Students will earn points during the tournaments and will be ranked based on the tournament standings, homework scores and participation in class. Club rankings will also be put up on the Chess Club web-page and updated after each tournament. Tournament winners and the best performers will also get a chance to play and learn one on one with the chess coaches.
