2 Welcome Avenues Leagues are a brand-new division of the Extended Learning program that allows students to follow their passions and dive into a subject area for a full academic year. These students will represent Avenues in tournaments and workshares within the five boroughs of New York City and beyond. In , we will offer four league options: Chess, Card Club, Lego Robotics and Student Stock Market. We look forward to expanding these offerings in the academic year. Our already accomplished chess team will now be housed within this division; families can still use the chess@avenues.org for all of their chess team questions or concerns. Included in the team fee are auxiliary expenses for the four major tournaments per year, a team t-shirt and other chess goodies. One of our most beloved after-school classes, Card Club, is also joining us in Leagues. Mark Golden will lead veteran players as well as students who are completely new to the game side-by-side in this 90-minute class. Twice per year students will face off against our old rivals, the Hunter Elementary Hawks and Williamsburg Northside Owls, in a Texas Hold Em tournament hosted at one of the three schools. Student Stock Market will be familiar to those who have been with us in Bulls & Bears: The Stock Market Game. We re now able to step it up and go head-to-head against Dalton and Leman, who will also be studying finance and investing. Each semester, the students will have a different theme to research and present at a bi-annual competition at one of the participating schools. The First Lego League teams will be headed by coaches Stephanie Arcentales and Yi-Ching Hsieh. These teams will be broken down into three age ranges: grades 1 3, grades 4 5 and grades 6 8. Teams will meet once per week in the off season and then longer and more frequently as is required as tournaments approach. Families can expect to attend between four and 10 weekend tournaments per school year, with the option for more. To register for these teams, first fill out the interest questionnaire and we will reach out to you about the next steps. 4 Avenues Card Club Mondays 4:30-6:00 p.m. Two weekend tournaments per year Open to Grades 6-8 or younger with instructor permission Fee $1,570 Mark Golden Jonathan Cosme Team Description Avenues Card Club explores the history, mystery and magic of card games from around the world with a focus on poker. We work on memory, math, probability, analytical skills, strategy, micro and macro economic models, money management, calculated risk vs. reward, psychology, social-emotional maturity and moral behavior. In addition to weekly standings, at the end of each semester the Avenues Aces meet the Hunter Hawks from Hunter Elementary School and the Williamsburg Northside Owls in an inter-school tournament. Team Fee The team fee covers the cost of two semesters of 90-minute specialty class each week, entry into two tournaments and a team t-shirt. Tournament Format Competing teams will meet two weekends per year at one of the participating schools. Tournaments will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This will be a single elimination tournament, similar to World Series of Poker events. Every player starts with 265 chips. Starting blinds: small blind, one chip; large blind, two chips. Blinds increase every hour. Blinds structure: 1/2, 2/4, 3/6, 4/8. Play will continue until one player has all the chips, or until 2:30 p.m. If you lose all your chips you are done for the day/ tournament. The order of finish will be determined by the number of chips each player remaining in the tournament has at 2:30 p.m. and/or the order in which players were eliminated from the tournament. Instructor Bios Mark Golden is a former ABC network news producer for Barbara Walters, John Stossel and others. A New York State certified teacher, Mark has two master s degrees in education from College, Columbia University and from Hunter College. Mark has played poker around the world and taught poker and international card games to Hunter students in and out of school for several years. Jonathan Cosme is excited to start the school year in his new position as an ELC Spanish fellow teacher and to return as a specialty instructor. He received a B.A in early childhood development from the University at Buffalo. When he s not working at Avenues, Jonathan volunteers at his local church as a program coordinator for the children s ministry. His hobbies include fishing, basketball and of course, playing poker.

Potential students should be prepared to attend two weekend tournaments per month throughout the year in addition to any classes, lessons or prep sessions they choose to attend. Once part of the Avenues Chess Team, the school will provide coaches for the four major tournaments per year: New York City Championship, New York State Championship, Grade Nationals and Super Nationals. Team Fee The team fee covers the cost of tournament snacks, a team t-shirt and chess backpack. Coach Bios Alanna Katz is the lead instructor, tournament director and COO at Growing Minds. She was taught to play chess by her father when she was three years old. In 2005, Alanna became the sole United States Girls Under 18 representative for the Pan American chess championships held in Brazil and is one of the top 100 female players in the United States. Alanna is an accomplished chess teacher with nine years of teaching experience. She has taught in many schools throughout New York City and has taught more than 2,500 students how to play chess. U.S. National Master Ben Katz is in the 99th percentile of all chess players in the U.S., currently rated He has won numerous tournaments and represented the United States in several international events, most notably as part of a delegation called the Collins Kids. Led by former World Champion Bobby Fischer s chess coach and mentor, John Collins, the Collins Kids competed all over the world. Ben has 15 years of teaching experience and enjoys working with students of all ages and experience levels. He has coached teams to first place finishes at the NY State, NY City and Mayor s Cup tournaments. Mackenzie Mac Molner is a Grandmaster, which is the highest rank a chess player can achieve apart from World Champion. He has many national titles to his name, including being the 2013 U.S. Open co-champion and the National High School champion in He was one of 12 players who qualified for the 2014 U.S. Championships. He has also represented the U.S. in the World Junior Championships. Born and raised in New York City, Andre Harding was taught the rules of chess by his father at eight years old and became a USCF Candidate Master in Also in 2011, the World Chess Federation, FIDE, awarded Andre the title of National Instructor. He has been a full-time chess teacher since 2005, working with thousands of students at more than 30 different private and public schools. Abby Marshall is Avenues curricular chess teacher as well as a five-time National Chess Champion and became the first and only female to ever win the Denker Tournament of High School Champions, a tournament where each of the 50 states sends a representative to compete. Abby also represented the United States twice in the World Youth Championships in Turkey and at the World Mind Sports games in China.

The students will devote time and energy into researching their topic and solving a problem using Lego Robotics. The students in Junior First Lego League will be using the WeDo 2.0 kits, while First Lego League students will be using the more advanced Mindstorms EVO kits. All will bring their creations and team spirit throughout the city to showcases and competitions. Team Fee The team fee includes entry into all tournaments, an Avenues robotics team t-shirt and weekly classes. Instructor Bios Stephany Arcentales first joined Avenues in fall 2013 as a Lower Division science teacher. Now she has the additional role of Lower Division science coordinator as well. Stephany has a B.A. from Hunter College (New York) in elementary education and English language arts and an M.S., also from Hunter, in science and math education. Yi-Ching Hsieh joined Avenues in winter 2015 as a Chinese teacher in the middle grades and has a wealth of language teaching experience both in the U.S. and abroad. Yi-Ching received a B.A. in foreign languages instruction with a minor in English from Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. She pursued her postgraduate studies at Durham University (Durham, United Kingdom), where she earned an M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). She continued her education at College at Columbia University, where she graduated from the Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL) program, earning her a certification as a Chinese language teacher. She holds an additional certification as a Mandarin Chinese teacher from National Kaohsiung Normal University (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) as well as several Cambridge University certifications: language background to language teaching and learning, lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching and managing the teaching and learning process.

8 Student Stock Market Wednesdays 4:00-5:30 p.m. Two weekend tournaments per year Open to Grades 6-8 Fee $1,260 Chuchi Arevalo Team Description Each week students will meet for 90 minutes to explore the topic of that semester. Students will research, build their portfolios and polish their elevator pitches in preparation for their bi-annual tournament. A minimum of five students will be required to form a team and topics will be announced on the first day of class. Team Fee The team fee covers the cost of two semesters of 90-minute specialty class each week, entry into two tournaments and a team t-shirt. Tournament Format In its first year, this league will include three schools: Dalton, Leman and Avenues. The number of schools is expected to grow in the future. Students from each school will work as a team and compete against the other schools in friendly, finance-related challenges. The specific theme will be announced at the start of each semester, giving students time to research and collaborate on a strategy. Instructor Bio Chuchi Arevalo has 20 years of professional expertise in finance in the U.S. and abroad and three years of educational experience developing and teaching innovative financial literacy classes. He has an M.B.A. in finance from the Georgetown University McDonough School of Business and a B.A. in economics from the University of West London, England. Chuchi is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and is fluent in Spanish.
